  • This band was suggested to me through Mearcord. I can't remember who, Mads or Bjorn, probably not one of them...I'm horrible about that, BUT this band is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and I love everything I've heard....except maybe one song. They are from Texas, which sure surprised me because the style had me thinking they were from WAY up north....

there's a reason i've got their Arrows&Anchors symbol tattooed huge on my forearm. these guys weave epic tales of heartache and triumph all with some of the most colorful poetic language found in metal. they were fuckin' brilliant.

FTM is literally my favorite band ever, & i'm regularly depressed they're done. There are a couple of similar sounding bands, including one called Olivia & the Random (just mellower than FTM)....but:
Check out RISHLOO!! 1st songs for me that triggered FTM flashbacks? 1) Freaks & Animals, & 2) Scissorlips. SO worth the time & effort, & even if you don't track me down to thank me, you're welcome. Really welcome.
We have to "share the gospel" of these unknown brilliant bands with anyone who will hear.

I have seen this band several times in the early 2000’s in Deep Ellum near downtown Dallas Tx. at clubs like The Curtain Club, Trees, The Galaxy Club and others. They were always great live even though they weren’t metal I still enjoyed them. The bands I was with Big Iron and PornLab played those clubs many times at that time also. There were a lot of great bands back then playing in Deep Ellum regularly like Drowning Pool, Jibe, Edgewater, Blue October, Downlo, Slow Roosevelt, The Feds, Speeddealer, The Mad Mexicans, Lowgear, and many others and Dimebag and Vinnie would be at many of these shows. Many great memories from that time!!

Heh... Ive seen them live 44 times if my count was correct. I was at the machine shop show and yes.. very much will remember that evening until my last day. There is so much to love and know about this band beyond just their music. The band members very so very closely knit with their fans. They held on for a long time but eventually there were to many variables that caused the band to split. If you ever have any questions about this band please reach out. :)

I love this band; I just searched for a reaction to them knowing there aren’t very many and I was surprised to see a fairly recent one. And yeah from what I understand a lack of funds had a part in them breaking up and ceasing to work on their 5th album which is sad and I would/would’ve personally fund/funded their comeback if I had that kind of money to part with but yeah we can still appreciate what they gave us. My other favorites by them are Whisky and Ritalin & Orphan Anthem ‘86.

Sam, sir, SO MUCH RESPECT coming from my end that you went outside the standard FTM canon (ppl seem to think that all callbacks must come from their most commercially viable album--you know it: Fables From the Mayfly ((etc. for the uberlong title)) so I love that...
Plus, Orphan Anthem 86 is also on MY FTM top 5.
      1) Granny Niblo (fr. the same Drawn & Quartered EP as OA86)
      2) Musical Chairs (still hits so hard after thousands of listens, & that walking bass line is unlike ANYTHING we get to hear today)
      3) Uh-Oh (those top-end vocals that increase in intensity at the end??? F*cking Darroh was a BEAST!)
      4) Say When--perfect album coda...such a simultaneously gentle yet intense exit from the joyride of Fables
      5) OA 86, which I guess I have tied with, yep, amazing opener Whiskey & Ritalin (but MUST be heard with the non-musical intro, in the same way that Nothing More's This is the Time (Ballast) must include the intro for us to fully appreciate the gut punch of the song.
And i wish Nothing More could find that same mojo for more of their stuff...not that they suck otherwise, but FTM DID! They did have that horrible 1st attempt @ an album (Carbon Copy Silver Linings, before they discovered both an identifiable sound & what a freakishly amazing vocalist they had with Darroh)...but considering what came after, it was worth it.
What FTM did was to experiment w/their sound & songwriting, & then they sat out in the fun electrical storms in North Texas & let the lightning hit, over & over, to produce amazing-yet-unique (even to their own sound) stuff like:
Musical Chairs. Whiskey & Ritalin. Uh-Oh. GRANNY NIBLO (#1 all-time for me). The Greener Grass (closest to traditional prog rock, IMO) Abigail (so catchy & kind of dreamy, sticks in your head.. plus the odd style of vibrato he applies to his vox--SO unique). Say When (perfect album closer). Dance of the Manatee (most popular of their canon). Uh-Oh (absolute vocal brilliance!). Quince-w/When the Bough Breaks as a perfect lead-in. Rikki Tikki Tavi. A Seafarer's Knot.
I could go on & on, but the point is this: Fair to Midland couldn't be boring if they tried. I stumbled over them by accident, & the 1st songs I heard were DEMOS from Arrows & Anchors, FFS...& they just reached into my head & grabbed hold & squeezed the shit out of my imagination. With other bands, even a lot of great bands, I cannot listen very often after a couple of months, or I burn out. Not so with these guys.
FWIW, they reissued vinyl for Arrows & Anchors this year (2023)...so naturally I have fantasies of this being a prelude to a reunion & new music? I think a LOT of people would love to participate in funding a new album...but they may have to rename to avoid the debt issues that broke them up.

@@ChrisSmith-gy9zp I agree that there are a lot of people who would love to help fund a new FTM project. Sheer brilliance that stands every test of time, including burnout-proof songs.

Saw them live twice. They opened for FlyLeaf and Ten Year during the first time I saw them, then I saw them for their headlining tour a year later. They were one of the bands that Serg Tankean was really in love with, but they got eaten alive financially. They're live shows were some of the best live shows I've ever been to. So sad they're not around anymore.

that happens when you're ducking flying debris, hanging upside down, crowdsurfing, and fighting to get your mic back. or drinking. listen to enough of their live songs and you'll hear stuff like this, and then pure perfection here and there...and i think the crowds honestly enjoyed the craziness more than the perfection.
