DJ Hype is one the reasons I bought decks. I don't care what anyone says he was one of the most influential DJs growing up. Generations of bedroom DJs and actual DJs would practice to mix and scratch like this legend. His sets were one of the most anticipated. Top producer!! Big up the Cheap Booze crewww oi oi!! If you know you know!! Hoxton 4 Life!!!

Happy days 😉
@@LondonSomething1994 Indeed they were!! It's all about legacy building for the next gen.
So true when I was a fabric one night I cracked my head open and had to go to hospital but all I was bothered about was getting back to fabric for hypes set
@@TakeMeBackPirateRadio love your channel bro takes me back oi oi
Hype is one of the first Dj's/producers I ever loved.
My raving days are over but the memories remain.
Nice to hear his story.
Legendary.
Hype & Ron - that’s UK royalty right there
Thank you.
I'm from the Middle East U.S. (Washington D.C. Metro Area) and in about 97'-98' a friend let me hold the Sub Base DNB Selection # 3 Mixed by D.J. Hype and I Wore that tape out. To this day it's one of the best mixes I've heard, period. BIG UP D.J. Hype..
First heard Hype playing as a guest at AWOL. He absolutely tore up Paradise that night. Blew my mind he did. I remember he played two copies of Scottie Dubnation tune. Amazing! Funny enough I met him twice. Once in Randall's De Underground. I was there on a Tuesday or something, and he walked in, in a massive Raiders jacket and took over the decks from Mikey De Underground and gave me a masterclass in scratching! Mind blowing. I then met him randomly at his home when I was charity fundraising. I didn't know he lived there. I kinda forgot my job and we just chatted about music. He was very humble and funny too. Absolute legend and those early Ganga Records releases were essential jungle tracks imo. Cheers again Ron. Great interview!
I'm pleased I found this one. Big love
Dj hype is such a nice guy . When I used to go into black market records he was always good to speak to.
…also called the raconteur 😆
One of the few DJs to cite the difference between Hardcore and Happy Hardcore. Dont hear that much anywhere but a hugely important era of the scene
Very true!!!!
Kevin is a legend... a DJ set that I’ve always dreamed of would be Hype back to back with Mixmaster Max!
Been into Hype since 96. Such amazing sets back in the day. Big love
Always been a big fan of DJ Hype and it’s great to hear his story
Glad you liked it!
Facts, DJ Hype got me into the scene. Ganja Kru, Zinc, Pascal, Still play all them tunes there.
History behind tho, sick pod. All of them. Just finished the Shabba amd Eastman ones. Amazing from DJ Ron. Bigup good sir
Hype has the patience of a saint for the amount of times he was interrupted and talked over.
hype was the level of dj skillwise i always aimed to be at when practicing. i watched part 2 last night (already saw part 1), but decided to come watch part 1 again. hype, dont worry, you may not see or feel how much you are appreciated, or how much people attribute to you, but we are here. between you and mampi swift on the tape packs (post 2000s specifically), they were the sets of incredible DJ talent for me
with HYPE on the line up u mapped the rest of the night/gig around his time slot...for me it was the balls to so much in a live set....the scratch master was well deserved...made for such a unique set it was UNMISSABLE !!
Drop 1 just before hypes set you know ur comin up nicely on dat 1 bruv
Kudos for this Ron! Hype mentioned some pioneers of the scene, who don't get enough credit... PJ & Smiley (Shut Up & Dance), Richie Fingers (The Shag), Rhythm Doctor, Connie and Babyface Ragga (Runtings Crew). And there's many more, including some of the early raves that brought the music to the hood, before there was a Roast, Telepathy or Fever, like concussion, Freedom 'that's what life's about' and Jericho.
Bizzy B too!!
Real talk 👍
Thanks and yes the heritage reaches way back.
@@djunclephill422 thanks for saying that (block party songs called 'real talk ') a slow one ill remix it for dnb mix
Hype is one of my all time influences , he's one of the reasons i can use turntables
Love these interviews, I’m a hip hop DJ but Hype got me into drum and bass back in the day! Much respect Ron, still got my copy of Live at the Soul All Dayer of the Century on vinyl 👊
We’ll done John for grabbing one of those rare piece of vinyl. Glad you’ve been enjoying the podcast. 💯
Hands down legend. Maybe invented jungle
Will never forget dj Hype at Dreamscape 4 at The Sanctuary.
fantastic interview. thanks to dj ron and hype for the music and the insights here. long time fan 🙏🏻
Thanks for the support and glad you enjoyed it.
Dje Dextrous provided the music for the documentary Feltham Sings, which won the BAFTA Award and an Ivor Novello Award for "Best Original Music for TV" in 2003.
Loved Hype’s honesty about everything from his own demons to the (IMHO) fact that there aren’t many better places than the UK for multiculturalism and music. Great interview
I remember my mate getting hold of a demo tape that dj hype put forward to an organisation called Kinetic. It was the best hardcore tape I'd ever heard. No other dj was scratch mixing hardcore like DJ Hype
Yes he def brought scratching to the rave game.
I've always preferred DJ Sy's scratching to Hype. DJ Sy has been around since 1989.
Absolute LEGEND
DJ HYPE ! ♡
Helter Skelter set with MC MC & MC Fearless . . . REDHOT ! 👌🏼
Lucky enough to have met the legend😊my number 1 dj back in day

The point hype makes at 7:27 I totally get, had this feeling with my best mates too when we first met, you just gel. Personally i always felt in the past we were all individual tribes that got split up, over time have come back together. We just don't remember it. Like others hype, ron and most of the oldskool crew are what formed my skills to this day what with the love of music in our souls. Have a lot of respect for you guys, hope to meet someday.
Love these interviews!!! Mad respect to DJ RON aka THE SARSASPARILLA KID and DJ HYPE
#TallUpRespect
Really Good!!!
Still have my cassette of Hype on Fantasy FM 88
Between him and XTC they were the reason I pursued scratching and djing to this day.
Much love
Big love to the godfather of the game. Hype kills it always. Cant say enough about him. Hes stll relevant for sure. Nc crew 🇺🇸 🌎

This man has inspired me so much. Maximum respect Mistah Hype!
Great interview, loved the story behind The Bee, and the trip heads 🤣 Big up Hype!!
Fantastic interview Ron. Big up to you for all of these interviews with these musical legends in the industry. Your interviews have a natural organic flow to them like. It's like 2 awesome friends reminiscing together. I grew up in East London and were part of the oldschool scene. Music power records Ilford, pirate radio and lots of TDK D90 cassettes everywhere. You've collected the best memories of my childhood and put them into such a professional perspective. Brilliant interview skill Big up to the Stratford/Forest-Gate crew. Respect to you my friend. Subscribed.
The revolution on sub base is one of the greatest songs ever.
Instant like! Big respect!
Thank you.
Love these interviews, so so proud to have grown up on the same rave journey you guys also experienced. Amazing unforgettable days, big up any hardcore Leyton crew that was my manor back then 🔥 - record village / cavern records weekly trips. Memories, proper true passion for those days.
Yeah, me too. I feel so privileged to have grown up with the music of these guys as the soundtrack of my youth. Still can't get over how young Ron still looks. He's 10 years older than me for gawdsake and he looks ten years younger! The Golden Child, indeed! Great work all round.
Thanks for the support it’s genuinely appreciated…and thanks is for the age compliment :) You’d be surprised what yoga will do for you both mentally and physically 🧘🏽♂️
@@LondonSomething1994 I am on the verge of having a bit (read huge) of a shift in lifestyle, and I'm thinking of dropping the usual vices and adopting yoga into my routine. It certainly seems to do the trick!

Ron, i read M-Beat is coming back. could you do a podcast with him please because despite the politics, i really loved his music and contributions and would love to hear his story, direct, no out of context article format. would be really cool for the preservation of jungle history

Big up dj hype, one of the true
Hackney hardcore pioneers.
Yes Ron wicked interview once again and big up Kev (Hype) ❤️

Great work with this interview Ron! It’s much appreciated. I always particularly love hearing about the early days of jungle properly coming into its own, like you two were getting into towards the end. Looking forward to part 2!

Godfather. Foundation. Big Daddy Hype.
Everyone wants equality but all talk about their differences. DJ HYPE talking the purest sense
Listening to this and randomly had the Isotonik ep out earlier
DJ Hype speaks from the heart and life experience. I got called all names as a kid. Coon Golly Wog N word all that. I can relate. I was small and dropped man in fights. They soon shut up
absoultey T for tremendous big up the hyyypeeee
How many joints did we all smoke with do hype at the Oprah house in boscombe. He passed them over all the time. Great bloke and he would show u the tunes he was playing. Good times. Things u woke lot won’t understand
Great interview
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it.
Drum and bass selection 2. Mixed by Hype. Think it was on tape only. Legendary mix.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME AN ANSWER TO MY QUESTION?
I`ve always wondered why other DJs or should I say the D&B community seem to not really give HYPE the praise he deserves or mention him.
I`m not saying HYPE didn`t get the praise he deserved at the time BECAUSE HE DID! Let me make that clear. I`m saying if you listen to most interviews from other DJs and MCs that are older you`ll notice they never mention HYPE. That is my point!
The reason why I say this is because I`ve been watching HYPE since 2000 and the man is a legend but IMO you will notice that other current DJ`s that are foundation DJs from the 90s and 2000s don`t mention him. However, they will mention other older DJs! This is only my opinion based on what I`ve seen over the last 20 years I think he`s not mentioned because that would take away from the people mentioning him if that makes sense because HYPE is the original main man. If you know you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Other people get mentioned like they are something special and they can`t even mix properly. Whereas HYPE is a legend. Legend scratching, legend mixing, LEGEND PRODUCER and he is my idol so this video is lovely to watch.
Big up HYPE & Ron!
people like to guard their own little camp. this is pretty much why jungle died. because they didnt want to give out their tunes to other djs/people. most my personal experience with people in dnb/jungle has been really negative. everyones just trying to keep their finger in their own pie and not share
@@romeisfallingagain I'm not entirely in agreement with that statement about Jungle. Music should always progress. Drum and Bass came from Jungle and was a direct response to the Ragga Jungle that was dominating and becoming popularised. Metalheadz, Good Looking Records, Reinforced, CIA and labels of that ilk along with their producers wanted to future proof the music and ensure its survival. I believe that people like Goldie understood what made up the dna of drum and bass. Ragga Jungle was a gimmick. The essence of Jungle isn't Ragga so its interesting to see Jungle sounds coming back in again and being reimagined. I can't speak for the D&B community but I know people who do work in the scene. It's like a family. So I guess that could feel fairly exclusive but that is the strength of D&B in that it is never going to be ultra cool. Or trendy. It's the bastard child of dance music so I guess there is quality check on what's gonna get recognised. Look at techno now. Every fucker is making what they think is techno when it really has nothing to do with the essence of techno. And because of that techno has suffered. D&B won't experience that as it doesn't want to be cool.
31:45 - Lucky enough to have our own loudspeakers that we also have to transport along with amps, cables and the like.
😂☺️😆
Phewww 😮💨😉
Brilliant...really interesting to get Hype's side of things about the 'transition', from 92 thru 94 ... we caught him at Orange, and some early do's round our way (Forum, Hatfield), but yeah...seemed odd how you got the feeling he was running parallel with the scene (eg, his tunes like The Chopper, on Subplates), but not 'in' with the level of bookings in London that Frost, Finn etc would get. Looking forward to Pt2. Nice one Ron.
Glad you enjoyed it. 🙏🏾
@@LondonSomething1994 ... really did. Subbed. 👊
Kevin aka DJ Turvey = Kevin Turvey (Rick Mayall).
I know i am the wrong demographic for you - however! without a shadow of a doubt you were the best DJ and some of the work you done at sanctuary is LEGENDARY! KEEPING THE FIRE BURNING WITH STIXMAN MAJICA DEF COMES TO MIND!! Still got the tapes now.
i see you the other week messing with MACHETTE - masterclass an gold!
100% ONE OF THE FIRST DJS I LOOKED FOR ON THE TAPE PACK AFTER - BE PROUD MAN, YOU ARE A DON!!!
As much as i love dnb and the the new thing, it aint nowhere as musical as it should be. DJs like you an swift are missed and should be taking the new 30 second beelines back to school. Proper sets, intro, roll out and outro. Look at Andy C, big respek by the way, but you can do them sets even better and you aint the only one. You, swift, kenny, nicky, micky, brockie, rap. serious, that will sell out easy. This style is identical to none. you know who the dons are, keep them on the flyer. Serious you can sell out venues EASY.
Anyway, even if this inspires you to at least put on one night i will be a happy man. big respect!

Remember Hype on MTV in the early 90's where he DJ'ed at the canal in camden.
I remember that!!!
@@TakeMeBackPirateRadio Kevin is an utter legend. Roll the beats and Tiger style. Oh gosh!
@@MemoryLaneCinema For sure. I remember hearing Hype play "Dub Plate Fever" back in 1993 and it was one of those tracks that you could listen to over and over again. He used to always scratch the intro into the mix. Epic!!!! Big up bruva you know!!
@@TakeMeBackPirateRadio How I wished I lived in the UK back then. Must have been amazing! I lived in Southampton though from 04-06 ;).
@@MemoryLaneCinema It was epic and to think there was a lot going on music wise. It was an exciting time. I must say I respect Hype for mentioning Sound System culture as being the foundation for it all because it certainly isn't written about that way by the mainstream. Actually there has been a revival of Sound System culture in the UK in places like London and Bristol which is really interesting.
Good interview
Thanks for the compliment.
