In this 100% unsponsored video I perform a full test of Racingline's ever popular air intake covering improvements in sound and discovering whether it actually allows more air to be ingested by my Mk7 Golf GTI Clubsport S's hungry 310 PS EA888 engine.
PLEASE NOTE - I AM USING A COTTON FILTER WITH WASHABLE FOAM OVERSOCK

Corrected/Edited for comment below - I measured an RS3 filter by mistake - Racinglines figure for S3/GTI filter is correct as far as it goes, reference to MAF deleted . Also look at other dyno reviews on YT , ca. 10 BHP more only with the larger dia intake hose and elbow. Unless you are talking very big turbo conversions the OE set up is fine, the filter area is already huge on the standard box, doubling it is overkill , Racingline are only comparing filter plan areas not actual filter medium areas, the OE filter is deeper and has more pleats, the intake duct after the filter is the main restriction, it's certainly not going to keep the intake air cooler on a hot day as the flow is determined by boost and engine revs. Apart from the noise, if that's your thing, it's possible the larger intake area of the Racing line set up over the radiator would give higher airbox pressures at higher speeds ( "ram effect" ) but you can add that to the OEM set up as well much cheaper than the Racing-line set up.
I appreciate all comments and welcome alternative opinions but to criticise Racingline's data and effectively say they are misleading buyers, yet talk about a MAF as a restrictor on this engine when it doesn't actually have one doesn't give your comments much credibility sadly.
The turbo elbow (or complete intake pipe) is a MUST as that is where the main restriction is
Thanks Graeme, definitely will do this in an episode before track event in May 👍🏻
Agreed, I did the pikey mods in stages and the elbow which I did last was what made the difference.
There is a chap with a gti who did lots of tests with intakes and pipes and yes, that intake pipe is the biggest restriction. Change it with stock intake box and it does very well compared to full aftermarket kits.
Hi,I’ve had my golf R for just over a year now and literally found out 30 minutes ago it has an R600 fitted to it🤣a pleasant surprise which prompted me to search it on here👍nice video
Thanks for posting this great video. I fitted my R600 today.
What exhaust do you have? I'm close to buying a MK7.5 R and I need inspiration.
@volksawizard. Wha is the part number of the one way valve ? My skoda VRS230 did not come with when I installed my R600.
What exhaust is that car running sounds amazing 👏
Only part that needs upgrading is the elbow into the turbo which you’ve missed!
Elbow plus pikey R600 mod costs £50 total.
Absolutely no need to spend £500+
£50 elbow plus pikey mod for free
Elbow will be done in due course. R600 is a big seller so clearly a lot of people like it and there are gains to be had however small
But the gains are zero once you’ve done the pikey R600 mod for free Andrew.
£50 elbow and RUclips pikey R600 video is all you need.
Racingline kit sell’s because they’ve infiltrated us with marketing.
Reality……. Way overpriced with questionable gains like all their products
Also keeping the engine bay looking all standard is another positive for me 👍
@@simonehayes4911 SO SO TRUE!!!!
I have golf R MK7.5 I would like to buy the RL r600 cold air intake with the cotton filter. where is best place to buy. I went on the official website and it gave me my nearest independent dealer but I don't want to go to them as they ignored my emails when I asked them to sell me a Miltek cat back exhaust which they also sell. does anyone have a link to an online place in the uk that I can buy one from?
Love the R600. Fitted one to my leon cupra 290 along with the turbo elbow, inlet pipe and turbo muffler delete. Makes a big difference in the way the car drives, picks up better and pulls a bit harder through the rev range. Added the coolant re-route hose to make it all look ever better and cleaner
I will do all those extra bits in time, just want to fit everything one bit at a time to feel the benefit so appreciate the feedback, will start shopping for them now. 👍🏻
As others have said, freplace the turbo inlet too with the full bore version. I did this and the R600 on my R with a stage 1 tune and it's absolutely brilliant. The full bore inlet also transformed it as I did it after.
hi Andrew, the best intake elbow for these cars is the turbo technics.
Thanks Arron, how has that conclusion been arrived at? Has someone done testing?
Hello Andrew. Remember you fitting this to your Mk8 Clubby so I bought one plus the hoses straight away to fit to my Mk8 GTI. Improvement straight away plus the sound is a joy. Will be getting the RL turbo delete to complete the fit soon.
Great to know it’s worked out for you as well Tony 🙌🏻
Best thing I did to my ED40 was this intake. The noise was a huge bonus but the feel overall was a bit better. I also had both filters, originally had the foam filter but I prefer a cotton filter as foam ones can degrade and sometimes a turbo can munch the foam and we don't want that. There's a difference in sound between them also and I prefer the cotton filter's sound. I've also got the elbow and pipe from Racingline. However, the Forge all in one pipe and elbow is cheaper and better overall, just doesn't look as OEM. But, it will also allow you to fir a DV if you wanted.
Good tips - thanks Josh. Not sure if you know but I have cotton filter with a foam oversock which cleans a lot more easily than cotton but you still have the better filtration of cotton.
@@volkswizard I did see you had the combo. Would you say the sock is worth it?
Super bit of kit. Personally I have the full RamAir version with turbo elbow fitted to my Cupra 280 and it really does make a difference. Love the sound it makes and found it funny during the freezing weather this winter to see the whole of my bonnet defrosted after a drive except for the specific area of the bonnet where the intake resides which had not fully melted. Proof the heatshield does its job! Had to get it all fitted and operating prior to moving to Stage 1. I also need to uprate the dreaded stock clutch beforehand too.
Pay for what you want raceline induction is expensive but if you can afford it why not all induction kits do similar jobs I'd probably go for ramair kit and turbo elbow and save £400 and put that saving towards stage 1 😊
Someone in the States has flow tested a number of induction kits/ intakes and RL was top 3. So they all perform differently, some better than others. mygolfmk7.com/2019/06/racingline-vwr-r600-cold-air-intake-flow-test/
How come you went for the cotton with the foam over sock? I’m torn between the foam and the cotton with the sock
Foam is best for balance of filtration and performance but a pain to clean so the sock can just be taken off and cleaned and put bank on really quickly and easily 👍
@@volkswizard thanks for the reply was curious as was torn between foam and the cotton with the sock as didn’t want just cotton as seen they get dirty and loose the black colour so I just bought the cotton and the sock. Have you done a intake pipe and turbo elbow replacement now?
Love your vids been subscribed for a long time now. Off the subject of this vid, I wonder if you can tell me where the air-con drain pipe is located under the car on a VW Golf Mk7.5? Kind regards Ray
Thanks Ray. AC seems to drain in the lower bulkhead area. This image shows the drain tube (43) but no body context but has to be lower bulkhead avoiding exhaust webautocats.com/en-gb/etka/volkswagen/golf/746/820220/
@@volkswizard Thanks for that info at least I know where to look under the car now👍
i always watched your videos and bought a 7.5 r estate , when it was dirty no one looked at it which was good but cleaned it up with water only and the stares you get lol its out of this world , keep making good content regards.😁
Hey ace ace, it's so true of stealthy fast cars than getting them dirty and they just blend in but clean all the little details stand out and people notice them more. 7.5R Estate is a perfect example (more so than 7 as the bumper detail is so much better).
@@volkswizard i said i would never like it but it grew on to me plus being paralysed from a brain heammorrage does not help but remarkable car vw golf r est 7.5 .
I do want one of these, fairly expensive but quality kit. For now I’ve modded existing box and panel filter etc. Sounds pretty similar
You can mod your airbox and get similar sound but you might be affecting performance unless you can keep engine bay hot air away from the air going into the engine as that's bad for performance.
Great Video Andrew.. Making me want to put one on My AW GTI plus even more now
Thanks Marky!
Did you not fancy doing the additional racing line intake components, such as the muffler delete and the turbo inlet elbow at the same time? I’ve found these to be really good components too
Just thought the same thing 🤔
Fair point, Cory. It suits me financially and from a video perspective to spread these out over later episodes so keep a look out over next few weeks
Ah brilliant, well I look forward to see these in the future!
I was lucky enough to buy my Cupra 280 with an R600 intake, however coming from my Mk6 GTI with open Forge intake, it was too silent. Swapped the R600 with a buddy that has an S3 8V and got a CTS Turbo open intake. Best decision ever, the sound is vastly improved.
Andrew, whilst you were at it you could've upgraded he elbow hose and turbo inlet pipe, they're both proven to improve the performance and airflow greatly, as well the turbo muffler delete is worth mentioning. Nonetheless, great video and have to agree, to change the intake is so easy on these EA888 engines haha. Keep it up!
Don't worry Vlad, I will be upgrading those bits in the near future, I had the R600 already and was meant to do all the extra bits to my Leon Cupra but the Clubsport S will get them, just want to do them 1 stage at a time to feel the individual benefits👍🏻
@@volkswizard that's great news, just what I wanted to hear. Looking forward to seeing the videos drop. Maybe a stage 1 tune also, at least. Would be a pity not to unlock all that available performance. Cheers mate!
I've got a stage 1 GTI 7.5PP, did the pikey R600 last week in 2 stages. First I did the blanking plate/Dremel out intake holes/remove snow guard/Ramair foam filter. When I started the car up and blipped the throttle it appeared to rev up a bit quicker, kind of like a lightened flywheel effect. Took it out for a test drive and can't say I really noticed it was any faster though. I then fitted a turbo elbow and inlet pipe and it's made a big difference, really noticeable. Better throttle response and it definitely pulls harder all the way through the rev range, feels smoother too. All for around £200. I'm aware of confirmation bias with these things but butt dyno says maybe 15-20bhp extra overall, it feels that much improved to me.
Nearly purchased this exact car, already had an r600 intake on the side as well. Great intake system. I installed this on a MK3 TTS. Chose to get a MK3 TTRS instead of this car in the end.
It was for sale for quite a while so there've already been a number of people who have told me they nearly bought it. Mk3 TT RS is a great but very different, if I only had one car I'd probably chose the TT too
I always look forward to your content on GTI Golfs
Thanks so much, really appreciate it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Any reason behind not doing a turbo elbow/larger intake pipe as well? Did a revo induction kit on my S1 with oversized intake pipe and it gained quite a lot more noise
A good question Jake. I guess I just want to feel the benefit of R600 on its own and then fit pipe and elbow later on down the line to keep me interested.
@@volkswizard cheers for the reply, that makes a lot of sense. I did a GFB diverter valve, intake and turbo muffler delete all in one go and can't tell whats responsible for what noises 😂
The larger inlet pipe makes the biggest performance gain, the intake itself is mostly for sound
@@volkswizard i mentioned this in a previous video....the elbow and the turbo muffler delete is most certainly worth doing...lots of whooshes and whistles...personally i wouldn't go for a diverter valve. look forward to you hopefully doing this in the future and see your face Andrew :)
What do you think of the racingline open air intake? Any negatives? To much conflicting information online - have 7.5 gti pp
I didn't even know RL did an open intake. If you look at the RL page where they sell the benefits of R600 (link in vid description), you will quickly work out an open intake with aluminium shielding is never going to work as efficiently as closed intake of PU material. So I think the open intake is for those who care more about noise than actual performance which is fair enough. A lot of mods actually make cars slower (like stiff lowering springs on a typical bumpy UK B road) so I guess they are just responding to demand.
Are you bothered about losing a few bhp for a bit of noise? It would bug me knowing my car was down on power a bit..
Thanks for the replies both! The noise was the main reason for looking into open. Have been looking into stage 2 parts and tune so a slight drop in a hp is still a lot more than standard but the sensible option seems to be the R600. Trouble is any benefits are listed by the companies selling them and negatives are listed by people who don't want to fork out the money lol
@@JoeThomasMTC I have the same car as you on stage 1, did the pikey R600 mods last week, the thing that really made the difference was the turbo elbow in my opinion. I've just done a 500 mile round trip this weekend and throttle response is better and it definitely pulls harder, more difference than I was expecting tbh. I nearly went for the R600 but figured ultimately it's a filter in a plastic box. I do think they look great though and if I wasn't trying to save the pennies on this occasion I would have got one. I remember back in the day taking my 205 1.9 GTI to Demon Tweeks to have a K&N cone filter fitted, on the drive back it was slower than with the standard airbox, which has put me off the open type ever since..
I went with the more tasteful APR full carbon. it was 50 usd cheaper than the racing line and too me the racing line products don't feel very or look quality for that you pay. just ABS plastics nothing hyper quality about it to be frank. also apr intake has less restrictions and looks the part and the sounds it makes because I have the open box carbon intake, elbow and the turbo inlet and turbo muffler delete, resonator delete and TCR Muffler. Waaaaaa (dsg fart) PSHHHHHHHhh
mk7.5 with performance pack with DQ381 unitronic stage 1+ ECU TCU
Have you seen the k&n 57s -9508 it's not cheap but you keep the lower airbox (removing the snow grill) and you get a panel filter new airbox top and it opens up the blanked off air duct to airbox
I haven't seen that. TBH I went off K&N a long time ago due to their over oiled filters that killed MAFs and the 57i intake which sucked hot air in and made the car slower. I'm sure it's fine but the name just has associations with badly modified cars, at least here in the UK.
Mountune do an even better flowing intake
Isn't that FORD stuff?

Hello wizard!
Since you’ve had dozens of gti-s, can you tell me is it ok if takes 0,7-1 liter of oil on 1000 kilometers depending on how hard I driver it?
Thank you for making such great vids!
Hi Nermin, glad you enjoy the videos! Are we talking oil consumption? If so that consumption is quite high, what car and what oil? Mk5 GTIs use oil but it's made worse by garages using 5w/30 or thinner. 5w/40 is the one to go for, just make sure it conforms to VW's standards as stated in handbook
@@volkswizard I just edited my comment-english is not my strong side lol
I’ve got golf 6 gti-it runs great pulls good but it eats a lot of oil. I’m using castrol 5w-30 thinking about switching to 5-40
My guy is in a rush 😮
Nice gloves 🌈
I good sensible modification . Looks like your having fun 👍
Thanks Keith, full throttle in 3rd to rev limiter is fun, a bit scarey too around half way as it really gets going and isn't as planted as say a Golf R - fear and fun are pretty closely linked I find!
Excellent outcome Andrew and such a nice sound and of course your tinkering made it look simple 🎯👏😇
Thanks Malcolm! TBH I cheated as a brand new R600 needs the screw putting in it which IIRC from the Mk8 install video, is a real pain!
Wld be interesting to see if air box mod with panel filter dose exactly the same??
There must be tests out there to confirm the validity of the R600, seeing as they have they have sold 30,000 of them! They must be well ahead of panel filter - the big difference is the extra intake slot and the surface area of the filter, these are 2x the size of OEM setup and that's very significant
@volkswizard u cld be right.
But why is impossible to find evidence .
Stock box mod v r600 with officially
timed 1/4 times lol...
is it the same for the mk8 gti clubsport?
Racingline to do an R600 Evo which fits Mk7 & MK8 and that's the one I am using as it's exactly the same item I fitted to my Mk8 Clubsport in Dec 2021 with similar results
Im after a Revo intake for my MK5 GTI, just waiting for a second hand one to pop up at a sensible price
Sounds like snake oil to me buddy. Ain't convinced its worthwhile. I'm taking mine to the Ring in 2 weeks for a weeks worth of driving and only thing I'm changing in my Clubsport S is SRF Brake fluid, 15-50 motul oil and taking an extra set of pads to have handy. The only thing I've done otherwise is lithium battery(lost 13kgs), and removed clutch delay valve and clutch spring(big difference). Otherwise new Cup 2's and car should be good to go. 😁
How can it be snake oil if it sounds better and there is hard data showing it ingests more air per rpm that the standard airbox? By all means say it's expensive for those gains in your opinion. All your mods are great but I've never boiled my factory fluid or suddenly worn through brake pads, but I've lost power at hot track days before hence why R600 is top of my list.
@@volkswizard @volkswizard well all I can say is hard "data" is one thing and feeling it is another so if you think that you can "feel" 5-6 horsepower through your butt then you have a better butt dyno than I have! 😂 Sound improvement was marginal even by your own admission. Moreover if you've never cooked brake fluid in a standard road car on standard brake fluid on track then you haven't been going fast enough! . I guarantee you will absolutely boil your brake fluid and will need a Dot 5 fluid on track if you peddle it properly. And in any case I thought you said you didn't want to break your track "cherry" at the Ring so I have to presume therefore that you are a track newbie and don't appreciate things like the above.. No shame in that but don't start to suggest otherwise.
BTW never expect to get the most of any car on track above 30 degrees Celsius. No matter what you throw at it in terms of mods it will usually always pull horsepower due to hear soak all round thankfully we only get a small handful of those days in blighty and Northern Europe..
Love these videos and I don't even own a Golf Gti or R
Thanks Charles, much appreciated - good to know the videos can appeal to those who are just into cars👍🏻
Not easy as it looks, many people would take a day figuring it out
I like this kind of content would like to see how a "performance" filter in the stock airbox compares too 👍
Thanks Rich. That would be interesting for sure, the gains with R600 aren’t huge so I can only imagine panel filter will be barely different from stock but you never know, might be better 🤓
Dont buy, just do the intake mod. I did it to my 1.5 Tsi and you hear loud turbo noises
I would say remove the sound deadening from under the bonnet but it doesn't look like you have any. Add the turbo elbow that will give you more flow and more noise
The Clubsport S doesn't come with the underbonnet pad - I think that's the full extent of the soundproofing removal. Elbow will be done soon, have no fear 👍🏻
Damn this car is a nice peace of car art 💪🏽
