There's a story also given by Ralph of Coggeshall in 1167 about a shipwrecked man who spoke a language nobody understood called The Wild Man of Orford. King Stephen's reign was a time of a lot of civil unrest, so I guess that in East Anglia and the rest of the South East there lots of mercenaries and displaced people in the landscape there and these developed into folk tales merging with the beliefs the local people already had
