    I can't tell you how happy and validated this video makes me feel!! I first heard about The Bandit Queens in your longlist video, read it, loved it and I am now getting in touch with publishers to try and translate it into French. I also discovered the previous book I translated (Supper Club) through one of your videos where you mentioned Lara Williams' Treats. So yeah, I owe you a pint (or 12) if we ever meet

    I've added Memphis, Black Butterflies and The Bandit Queens to my TBR! Thanks!
    Video idea: You and Jack Edwards do a video together where you argue for/against Glory. He hated it kind of a lot and I would love to see if your take on it would change his mind at all. Not that minds NEED to be changed - but I still maintain it'd make a good video!

    • @TheLeniverse
      @TheLeniverse Год назад +5

      @@MariannesStudio I'm not normally super bothered by that (like, no one enjoys reading about SA, but it's not a deal breaker for me), and I was super uncomfortable to the point where it made me dread every return to the dolphin narrative. The book also felt like being continuously hit over the head with a cartoon mallet while someone shouted "HUMANITY BAAAAD" in my face.

    • @juliette47575
      @juliette47575 Год назад +3

      @@MariannesStudio I would say honestly the amount of times it happens it felt similar to when a film will just continuously use extreme gore and it feels so unjustified. I understand why it was used here in the book just once, but continued graphic detail of it was overkill and I really had to force myself to finish it. It was definitely my least favourite of this Prize!

    I’ve been a subscriber to your channel for a while but initially more for the content that wasn’t to do with books. I read a lot as a child but I got out of the habit around 6th form when I didn’t get on very well with my English Literature teacher. Since then reading books became a pretty rare thing and a bit of a chore. Anyway, fast forward to watching this video back in May (I’m in my mid 30s now) and I decided to give audio books a go for the first time. I’ve listened to 6 of the books from this list, plus two others and am currently reading my first actual book in years. I’m extremely grateful for the inspiration to rediscover my love of reading. Thank you so much!

    ahh! i also read the whole women's prize longlist and - the beauty of subjectivity of books - we have a totally different personal shortlist. mine would include Demon Copperhead, Trespasses, Cursed Bread, Stone Blind, Wandering Souls, and Children of Paradise (Memphis did almost make it but I thought Children of Paradise was fresher!). Demon Copperhead is my winner for sure - I loved the way hope was sewn through it - you're definitely right that it's trauma heavy but the thing that shone through to me was his spirit (also not a dickens fan but it felt so removed for me, thank god). Pod and Glory were my least favourite on the list :( i definitely agree with you about The Dog of the North and I'm a Fan though - both totally not for me!

    If you enjoyed The Bandit Queens I seriously recommend Out by Natsuo Kirino. A Japanese classic about four middle aged women working the night shift at a bento factory, united by dissatisfaction and loneliness in their domestic lives, when one of them kills their husband, the others (some with a little financial incentive) help cover it up. They become entangled in a dark underworld of organised crime, that tests their friendship - and their jealousies complicate matters further. 10/10 read from me.

    I anxiously awaited this video, and it's finally here! Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the longlist, though we have very different reactions to the books. I'm aligned with you on I'm a Fan (the book isn't what it purports to be) and Children of Paradise (too niche), but I was gutted to see that you DNF'd Demon Copperhead (my #1 of the 10 longlist books I've read), and I LOVED listening to the audiobook of Stone Blind (though I know little of Greek mythology) as well as Cursed Bread (which brought to mind the dizzying uncertainty of My Cousin Rachel). Where we do align is on The Bandit Queens and Pod; I couldn't put either of those books down. Greatly enjoyed this video, Leena. Thanks for sharing your insightful thoughts on this incredible longlist! P.S. The Marriage Portrait is a pale phantom to Hamnet. Highly recommend pulling it from your shelf and finally giving it a read. 😏📘 Also, closest book I've read to Pod is Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton. It's not as literary, but it is hilarious, moving, and memorable. The audiobook is particularly enjoyable.

    I've thought a lot about how "book I really enjoyed" doesn't always equate to "book of greatest literary merit". But with regards to this longlist I think that if the judges have actually used literary merit as a criteria, then their notion of literary merit and innovation is just not the same as mine. I get the feeling that they agreed to "pick one book with as many literary devices as possible, and then one book that was a really enjoyable read, we want both of those qualities on the list but they don't have to be in the same book!"

    Great video! I've been looking forward to this one. I loved Demon Copperhead but honestly all your reasons were valid. I think I literally just forgot about the David Copperfield basis (which was easy because I've never read it originally) and that's why it was easy for me to enjoy it

    The way you feel about Stone Blind is how I feel about biblical references in books. I didn’t grow up with a biblical education, and the west seems to assume everyone knows that stuff.

    i didn't let myself watch this video until i was at least halfway through my last one (which was also demon copperfield) and ive never wanted to be able to talk back to a youtube video so much 😂 our lists are almost completely opposite (i did really love pod though)

    I’ve only read I’m a Fan so far, for me after I finished reading it, it felt like it was a 3 star. Good but not amazing. But as I was writing up my review on StoryGraph and dissecting my thoughts and what the author had done I talked myself into a 4 star based on the literary merit, I respected it rather than enjoyed it. But it doesn’t feel like a short lister.

    Regarding the anthropomorphic animal stories; I feel it's because they are most strongly associated with fairytales, fables etc that while having great historical and cultural importance are now brushed off as children's stories. Even stories like watership down are regarded as being for children.
    I think fantasy as a genre has a lot more examples than literary fiction for a similar reason.

    I read 'Tresspasses' with my book club and we all enjoyed it. I agree that the characters were believable and well fleshed out. 'I'm a fan' was interesting but definitely heavy on the relationship with the guy rather than the stalking. I couldn't stand Normal People but this one was ok for me. 'Stone Blind' was a SUCH as disappointment. For me there wasn't enough of the Medusa story, too many characters made it confusing and part way through the olive trees (?) become a narrator which was odd. I'm just reading 'The Marriage Portrait' and I have to say I enjoyed Maggie's other books more. Bandit Queens are next on my TBR, glad you liked it!
