Super stimulating exchange. Cool job title too - Space Psychologist. I think fundamentally everything is pattern and what we are wired up to do is look for pattern, and at some level we get rewarded when we find it - from babies to astronauts to anyone at any age willing to pay attention. I recall Vilayanur Ramachandran speaking about finding residual neural bridges in the brain connecting regions responsible for vision and sound, which had not completely separated during normal brain development, which could account for pronounced synethesia in the subject. In that instance It was actually a physical pathway in the brain circuitry.

Soldiers fighting in jungle warfare use there peripheral vision to detect threats - it's a lot more sensitive.. In a jungle it is very much a closed hemmed in environment so looking ahead is basically a waste of time because it's all.. green.
