  • Taking advantage of the record setting flooding earlier in the year I have spent all summer fly fishing in the tailrace below the Lake Somerville dam mostly targeting hybrid stripers and whitebass. The C.O.E. in an effort to bring the lake back down to normal level has been releasing water non-stop since early June which has filled the tailrace with lots of fish.
The original Pet spoon is a very effective lure and has a long and storied past with many fishermen. But like most conventional fishing tackle the original Pet spoon isn't very "fly friendly" due to it's significant weight. This pet spoon fly is my way of adapting the action and shape of the original Pet without the weight.
I've had decent results with the pet spoon fly when the fish are actively feeding near the surface like in the early mornings and a few times when working around structure with current like bridge supports.

I love that you use so many non traditional items to make your flies. It's a lot more creative than most fly tying videos I've watched. Keep em coming!

How do you get the reflective finish on you spoon fly that is made from palstic bottle?

UTC does make a 280 denier thread. I haven't seen it but I bet it looks like floss. Some of the flosses I have bought are 300 denier so it can't be much thinner. Anyway, I can't say I have ever seen a spoon fly tied this way. It is a good idea but you have to come up with a template so they all come out the same size. You can't control action cutting each one out individually. How about a stamp of some kind? Just a thought. Anyway, I have seen the epoxy ones and they are usually made in a spoon. For uniformity. All the best to you and God bless you and your family. Sean

Don’t know how I missed this videos think it was when I got sick 3 years ago and in hospital. This is a great idea! I fly fish too but wondered if these would work being retrieved on a spin reel. Would appreciate your thoughts

I've done it.. put the spoon-fly about 18 inches below a weighted popping cork and worked the rip-rap in the spillway..

nice video. I just tied some Texas-type epoxy spoons (Waldner spoons) and it's nice to see a simpler way--

Very Nice Bill. I will have to give it a tie. Also, I have heard the hook type referred to as Oh-shaun-uh-see. not sure if that correct but I get a kick out of hearing you say it though.
