Making a Spoon Fly Body

- Don Lawler of Shreveport, LA demonstrates how to make Spoon Fly bodies using....well, spoons. A simple technique that allows the use of many materials that are limited only by the tyer's imagination.
Spoon flies are great for Redfish whether on the Louisiana coast or the Northeast Florida inshore fishing.

Very cool. I like that your are using everyday materials, not over-priced "fly tying" material.
I have got to try this with some of that silver metalic ribbon
Amazing! You can glitter to it or maybe even strips of flashabou, etc. sky is the limit!
thanks for the lesson Don, nice work...
Nice, I will give this a shot. I usually use fake fingernails I get from a nail salon.
I will be giving this a try , thank you sir for the lesson
Hi Don! Thanks for this. I was looking for your example.
cool
I can here it now,"honey what happen to all the colored plastic spoons for the birthday party"🤔😁👍
Around my house I would be the first suspect and she would probably know just where to look.
unique and simple
I liked the method you showed for making up the bodies but do you have a separate video showing how you connect the spoon body to the hook?
Mark Story , I don’t have a video of that but it’s straight forward. The hook is bent to match the curve of the body. You just need to get close. Apply a thread base to the hook in a matching color and add a weed guard of your choice. Using the same epoxy (or uv cured material) attach the hook to the body. The eye should extend just beyond the body. I hope this helps.
That's something I've wanted to do before. What a simple, neat way you have shown here. I've got to try it. Only question is about the 'dry sheet', I'm not sure what that is. But I guess I'll figure that out soon enough at the craft shop!
The dryer sheet is a dryer fabric softener sheet that you use to eliminate static cling. If you're using a thin material and need this, be sure and get the unscented ones or use one that has been in the dryer and has all of the smell (stink) taken out of it. You'll find them in the section with all of the washing machine soap.
It's dryer sheet that is used as a "softener" for you dryer loads. Get the unscented ones or even better use the used ones that your wife (or you) normally throw away..
Don, do you add weight to your spoon flies to get them to sink? Thanks for the exceptional video.
Ed Brown I don’t know if Don will read this but I’ve never seen him add weight. Part of the allure of the spoon fly is the way it flutters down the water column. I would think weight would adversely affect this action.
How do you make the template to cut out the spoon after you take the epoxy shape
Do you bend the hook to match the bend of the spoon?
Normally yes. It's just a slight bend to get it close. Then cover with a thread base and epoxy to the body. Don't forget the weed guard.
When do you add the dryer sheet do you add it with the ribbon or can you make a dryer sheet spoon instead
The dryer sheet is used to reinforce a lighter material that, by itself, wouldn’t hold up well. Think of it as a fiberglass mat reinforcement that is clear after absorbing the epoxy.
@@FlyFishVideo I actually use the fiberglass mat which works great
Can you please tell me where you purchase rhe spoons I have looked everywhere. thank you
I'm not sure where Don got his but pretty much any plastic spoon will work. I got mine at the grocery store but they have them at Wally World, etc. If you're looking specifically for the colored ones just look around. The key is to look at the shape of the spoon you're buying and the size. Not all plastic spoons are created the same so find one that fits the profile you want to make. Note that they also make clear spoons that will let you see how things are setting as you put it together.
they are in the kids section.
will it work for saltwater
Yes. It is especially good for redfish in shallow water but will work in all waters.
