    That was done in Final Cut Pro X. I exported the score as three gigantic pages (~75" wide) as PNG files from Sibelius, changed the white background on all three pages to alpha for transparency, and then set the images in motion in FCPX in synch with the music.

    Film scores are typically written in concert pitch, but scores of this sort are transposed. So what you hear at 3:28 from the lead trumpet is actually a concert D♯, which reads as an F♮ in the score and on the trumpet player's part (the G♯ minor key transposes to B♭ minor rather than A♯ minor for slight ease of reading, so the note is notated as F♮ rather than E♯).
    Hope that wasn't too confusing!

    "No amount" will save it? Sir, I'll have you know that in my next attempt, there will be Tchaikovskian cannons firing and Stockhausenesque helicopters roaring, all over a choir of sprechstimme vocalists sing-speaking the lyrics. But the real magic is that for its premiere, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the whole performance will consist of a recording played to the audience through a small, unamplified radio that slowly detunes. John Cage ain't got nothing on my Fringe game, hell no.

    Definitely a flexitone. They're really fun to play. Its really kinda weird, though. You hold onto the handle, which bends back to a really pliable metal bit that makes the tone, and there's a mallet-head type thing on one side. You kinda make a whip motion and bend the metal piece with your thumb at the same time to make the sound. :)

  • @nickproch
    @nickproch  11 лет назад

    I'll keep those in mind! I always thought that Tool's Schism would be great, but I imagine I'd be far from the first to do an orchestral arrangement of that one.

  • @nickproch
    @nickproch  11 лет назад

    There is a vibraslap in there, too, but I think he means the flexatone. That measure has a vibraslap on beat two, the flexatone on beat three, and a whip on beat four (and beat two of the next measure).

    Definitely love this and the Katy Perry one. I know you probably don't take requests, but I've always wanted to hear something like this done with Tool or Linkin Park. Tool is pretty epic on its own, but your treatment of anything Linkin Park would definitely be an improvement. Check out "Powerless" on their recent album, LIVING THINGS. It's got some nice 7/4 and 4/4 transitions, and a great harmonic structure there. It'd be a real treat one day. :)

    The score was generated in Sibelius, yes. The animation was done using Final Cut Pro X.

    I would really love to hear an orchestral/symphonic version of "Explorers" by Muse, like keep to the piano parts, but add some strings in the background and play the vocal parts on violin or something to that effect. Ideally, a wedding type sound. That would just about make my life if you could do that!

  • @nickproch

    Thank you! I use a lot of different Kontakt-based sample libraries in Logic. It's a mixed bag, really… If you're curious about any particular instrument, though, I'd be happy to tell you which library it came from. :)

  • @nickproch
    @nickproch  11 лет назад

    It's called a flexatone. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what it was too (in the real song), but one of my percussionist friends helped me out. Not sure if that's what Macklemore actually uses, but it's pretty close.

    Thanks! I tried to delete and repost my comment to say F after I noticed I'd misread the note as a G. It instead posted 3 times, wouldn't let me repost, and showed my old comment as deleted...
    Regardless, thanks for the clarification. I wish I could still play that high. I'd be lucky to get a high C if I grabbed my trumpet now.
    I enjoyed your arrangement for sure - thanks for sharing it :)

    Looks like it tops out at a double G at ~3:38. Maaan I wish I still played my trumpet. It was fun counting lines above the staff...
    Wait - it's a score - are scores always written in C, or are they transposed into the key of the instrument? Man. I can't remember anything... :(

    It's like this is two different arrangements packed into one. Everything after "I wear your granddad's clothes" is moderately decent. Everything before that needs a lot of work. Lots of muddy rhythms.

    It sounds like it, but maybe they taped some felt on it to dampen the sound a bit. Sounds like the effect they were going for is kinda like hitting a beer bottle with a drum stick at the same time as you open it. Haha.

      Now can you imagine what it takes to compose an entire Symphony? 50+ parts for an hour of music. Classical composers have an incredible knowledge of music.

    • @chedzeesheeda1019
      @chedzeesheeda1019 7 лет назад +1

      Ehhhh...... Here's the trouble.... As long as you stay tonal, you're really not writing that many unique parts. You're matching comparable timbres and using maybe 6 notes across the whole thing, at it's most individually complex. The ones who keep it interesting have incredible knowledge of music. The ones we forgot because they didn't make the cut have about as much ingenuity and math in them as most pop stars. Which does mean that exceptional composers are still, simply, exceptional.
