    This is another deep Dharma talk which shares the very concrete method to practice mindfulness, especially the breathing technique. Her talk is very vivid because it is based on her own experience.
    How to generate happiness and to take care of sufferings, the answer is mindfulness. And mindfulness is available through conscious breathing, namely awareness. The key is to stop thinking. Non-thinking will transform ourselves to awareness, or the Buddha.

      This is the practice I would love to use with others who need support with life. I trained as a counsellor, and never used my qualification, it didn't resonate with me. The Buddhist practices make sense to me, coupled with higher consciousness 😊.

    Ya know, not for anything, but it would be worth all the gold in the world to come to a retreat and learn how to get even one good night's sleep and not have a backache in the morning and not wake up 2-3 times in the night. I wish I could join the community but am afraid I've got too many years under my belt to be a monastic. Still, there is something to be said for that kind of lifestyle in this crazy, frenetic, all-about-me world that I find very tempting to pursue...one of these days, I'll save up enough to cover the costs of a spring retreat and find my answers, too. Bless you, folks at Plum Village for your bodhichitta and work to relieve the suffering of the world. Namaste!

    Wonderful talk! Thank you!
    I have a question about the sensual nourishments. She's saying that disturbing or violent movies will effect our mind negatively. However modern psychology says that movies like that can help us process difficult feelings safely without actual danger facing us. So when we face danger in actual life, we won't freeze and traumatize. I guess my question is how do Buddhists answer to modern psychology?

    • @k14michael
      @k14michael 6 лет назад +3

      Ronald Duck - I guessed that would depends on your intention. Are you watching it to help you process difficult feeling or preparation for danger or are you watching it to feed your habit of violence? Basically are you enjoying it? If so, can you find another way to get your sensual nourishment without the violence?

    How does one embrace seed of Anxieties and Insecurities? Thanks.

    • @sistertruededication
      @sistertruededication 5 лет назад +14

      Dear Velu, thanks for the question. Anxiety and insecurity may manifest first of all with some shortness in the breath and some physical tension. Different people may feel it in different places in the body. With the energy of mindfulness, we can have the first breakthrough which is to recognize: "Ah, I am anxious. I am experiencing anxiety". That is already a kind of awakening, because we know what is going on in our body and mind. The next step is to see where this feeling is manifesting in our body. Are we frowning? Are our hands tense? Is our breath short? Can we bring some tenderness, love and release to these parts of the body, using our energy of mindfulness? Often releasing tension in the breath, and enjoying some full, mindful, in- and out-breaths can really help. The next step is then to offer ourselves some reassurance, in other words, to bring insight to the suffering. Why am I anxious? What is my fear, my concern? What can I do in my situation to address it? Is my perception of the situation skewed or exaggerated in any way? Sometimes we can get this insight ourselves, and sometimes it's helpful to ask someone we trust. They may be able to explain things more, and reassure us. So, handling anxiety is also a longer-term practice of deepening our insight about ourselves and the world around us. The practice of "appropriate attention" in our everyday life is helpful. When we are mindful we can recognize that our is mind going towards a spiral of fear (eg. visualising the *worst* that can happen in the situation). Then we can gently bring our mind back to what is *actually* going on, which may not be too bad at all.
      In terms of insecurity, this is to do with accepting ourselves and having compassion for ourselves. Our Teacher has written about this very beautifully in books like "Teachings on Love" and "Reconciliation". In our mindfulness practice it is very helpful to see that we are not a separate self, but we are made of many non-us elements: like our parents and ancestors, our culture & society & education, our friends and teachers. In fact, precisely because we are-not-ourselves, that is why it can be easier to accept and love ourselves :)
      I hope this may be helpful. Good luck with your practice!

      Hi Riya, that's a good question. I'm not sure I know the answer, though! Perhaps it's because I already feel so visibly Buddhist already (robes, shaved head 'n all) and this talk was in a retreat in our Buddhist monastery in the South of France. More deeply, I guess because I have heard the teachings of the Buddha through our Teacher, whenever I reference "Thay" our teacher, and Buddhist Zen Master, I guess I'm referencing the Buddha and Buddhism. And beyond that, Thay has always reminded us that Buddhism is more a path than a religion, and that the practice doesn't *need* to be described in Buddhist terms... Yet at the same time, we monastics feel deeply connected to, and a deep sense of belonging within, our Buddhist tradition and heritage...
      Hmmmm... is that enough of an answer?
