I know this is 6 years old but for any other new quilters who see this...for me this tutorial was a game changer! Not having to mess about with doing a diagonal seam on my binding took away all the frustration and just left the enjoyment of binding. I actually really like this part of quilting but the whole fitting together and sewing a diagonal seam was stressful. Maybe it's not a purist's way of doing binding but it's good enough for my purposes and I'm back to loving the binding part. I always hand sew the back because I like to stitch but using the machine on the front with this new (old) method makes it quite quick and easy. Thank you FQS!
After sewing on the binding from the front, I turn it over to the back and use Elmer's washable school glue to hold it. Dab a bit of glue to the quilt back, fold the binding over it, press into place which dries the glue. No pins required! Sew binding on from the front because if you glued it correctly into place, you will catch the binding in the back. Glue washes out in the first wash! easy peasy! Looks so nice!
It’s July 3,2023…I just finished my July 4th quilt that I started a year ago. Just in time. It’s in the wash! 🎆 I spent an hour looking for an easy binding tutorial. I’m glad I found this one! Thank you, Kimberly😊 Happy 4th of July from Las Vegas🎉 🇺🇸
I have been machine binding for years, but I've never liked the way the binding looked on the back side. Sometimes the stitches ended up on the binding, but most of the time they didn't and it always looked sloppy. But after discovering this tutorial, I have to say this is the best method I have ever tried. And the back looks absolutely perfect. I wish I had discovered it sooner! Thank you!!
This is a great method! As a new quilter this makes me feel more confident that I can do this now rather than turning my quilt inside out and hand tying :) Thank you so much!
I checked a few tutorials before I found yours and yours was the one that made sense to me. Your tutorial helped me finish a beautiful project for my future daughter in law. The mitred corners rock! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Nice tutorial - thanks! I used Clover Wonder Clips (the red ones) rather than pins. They worked really well - flat side towards the back, clipped right at the folded edge of the binding.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I did my binding this way and wow I was amazed at how beautiful it came out. It was the best binding id ever done. And my mitred corners just perfect. Can't thank you enough for showing us this video. Love your tutorials
KJ, I can’t tell you how much thus tutorial has helped me. I’m a fairly new quilt maker and I have this saved ready to watch when I do a binding. Thank yo so much for your instructions!!!
Machine binding scares the heck out of me... I'm going to try this method, but I'm still terrified!! Thank you for another wonderful tutorial! (I, too, wish you'd shown the finished stitching!) 💜
Lovely tutorial - professional - well prepared and got straight to the point and no waiting around. Aside from that I am keen to try this method - it looks tricky but very neat if it is mastered properly.
I just did this technique and it cam out good only thing I did different is once I flipped the binding over and started stitching next to it I used a stitch in the ditch foot and just guided it right a long next to the binding and it came out good.
Great tutorial, thanks Kimberley. Perhaps those little Clover clips might be better than pins, so you don't have to sew over any pins and perhaps break a sewing machine needle? Just a suggestion. Love the Fat Quarter Shop!
Great tutorial - very clearly laid out and the results are nice. My only gripe is the number of pins on the back are deadly and hard to remove when at the machine. Not sure if there’s a fix for that but my lap hurts! 😅
Thank you for the tutorial! I am wondering about taking off the pins since they're underneath. I'm a beginner in quilting and sewing. Could I suggest that you show us how you do it in the future? I'm a visual person and it helps me when I see itThanks again for the tutorial! 😎
Once you finish each side, you can flip over the quilt to easily slide out your pins. We recommend you do this as you go, otherwise you will have a lot of sharp pins poking you. Thanks for your question.
Your tutorial on how to bind a quilt was the best I've seen! I'm new to quilting but you made it easy even for me thank you so much, I will definitely be following you!
I liked this until it came time to close up the binding ends. You can make that seam look just like all the other joinings of the seams in your binding. Make a triangle in the start of the open strip by folding down the end so that it lays along the edge of the quilt. Fold in half again. All raw edges are at the edge of the quilt. Start sewing about 6-8 inches from this triangle. When you get to the end, stop sewing 12-16 inches from where you started sewing. Lay the end on the quilt just where you will want it to be and cut off that tail at the bottom of the triangle: the binding will be overlapping that far. Then sew these seams the same way you sewed your other binding strip seams. Open seam allowance and fold in half again. You won't be able to find your start-stop place on your binding.
Do you remove your pins as you sew, or, do you remove them when you are all done sewing? If you don't remove them until the end, do you sew over them, or do you ease over them manually? Thanks so much for sharing another great tutorial and for your help. Linda
Hi Linda, Yes I remove pins about one to two stitches before I sew over them. I personally never sew over pins. If you do sew over the pins on this your stitches where your pin was will be longer and not look as good as your other stitches.
Hi Jennifer - simply line up your ruler with the edge of your quilt top, measure 3/8" and trim. This will leave you with the perfect amount of batting to fully stuff your binding. Thanks for the question, glad you enjoyed this tutorial!
Maybe I missed something....pin on the back from from inside towards outside of quilt?? Seems it will be cumbersome, when stitching on the front, to reach under your work to pull pins out as you progress around!?!!
I like this technique, and it was helpful to watch. But it appears she is sewing over pins (on the back side too boot). It would be nice to see how she might do it today with a refresher video.
Yes with this binding technique we actually keep the pins in place and sew right over them. Some people however don't like to do that for fear their machine needle will break but with this method, it's the only way.
If only Simplicity still made the bias tape maker! 😢 I don't understand why some other company hasn't taken up the challenge and made something similar. The prices the 'old' Simplicity machine is bringing secondhand on eBay are crazy but, then again, it signifies just how much people like the machine.
I don't understand the first part where you said you trimmed 3/8th inch from the quilt top. How did you do that if all three layers were already quilted together?
Abigail Bullard if you only want to trim the quilt top or bottom you will just fold the bottom underneath as far as you can out of the way and then trim what you want without cutting the rest.
I have used this binding technique on a small wall quilt and it is so easy and neat in appearance. What is the name of the quilt on the wall behind you in the video?
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Your instructions are so clear! A quick question- what weight thread did you use for the quilting on this quilt. It looks really nice, almost like it's saddle stitched!
+angelheart1430 Thanks for your comment. We actually do not have any plans to film that particular block but will certainly keep it in mind for the future. That particular quilt is found in our Fat Quarter Style book and its called Blossom. www.fatquartershop.com/fat-quarter-style-book

I've watched several videos teaching this method. Yours was very good. But the one thing they all have in common, is not showing the other side. The problem I have is that the stitching on the other side, is sometimes where it should be and sometimes an 1/8 - 1/4 inch away from the binding . Which doesnt look so hot on the front of the quilt. How do I correct this Problem?
I tend to put the binding on the back and bring over to the top so the stitching is good on the front, but then still have this issue on the back. Either way, I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Hi Pam - You aren't necessarily doing anything wrong, that is a very typical issue for this style of binding. I find that the more i pin and the slower I go, the better results I get. There will still be times when you don't catch the binding on the back. Just make sure you have trimmed your quilt sandwich right up to the edge, nice and straight so when your binding is pulled over, it stays nice and even. To get the best results possible, I prefer to bind by hand.

It’s not a big deal having a straight seam. Why people make such a fuss is ridiculous.

This is a good tutorial. I only wish they had showed what the finished binding looked like on the back side!
Best binding video yet. Thank you you Kimberly and Fat quarter shop!💃💃

This is, by far, the clearest and easiest quilt binding tutorial. Very well done
SO glad to hear that! Binding was a bear to conquer for us too, so we wanted to put out great, clear videos on all the different ways you can do it!
This method is FABULOUS! I will be doing this from now on. it looks so neat and even. I love it.
Nice tutorial - thanks! I used Clover Wonder Clips (the red ones) rather than pins. They worked really well - flat side towards the back, clipped right at the folded edge of the binding.
Hi Kimberly,
Your work is always so neat and precise, plus you always explain it so well.
Thank you,
Karen
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I did my binding this way and wow I was amazed at how beautiful it came out. It was the best binding id ever done. And my mitred corners just perfect. Can't thank you enough for showing us this video. Love your tutorials
I totally agree Tracy. This was an awesome tutelage and I was blown away by the results and how quickly it moved along.
One of my favorite tutorials ever 😊
I just did this binding and it was so well explained. I’m a beginner also. Thank you so much
I tried this method today and I was very pleased with the results. I may have to switch to doing all my quilts this way.
Thank You! I struggle with machine binding and miter corners all the time but I think I finally learned how to do it.
KJ, I can’t tell you how much thus tutorial has helped me. I’m a fairly new quilt maker and I have this saved ready to watch when I do a binding. Thank yo so much for your instructions!!!
Hi Valerie.
Machine binding scares the heck out of me... I'm going to try this method, but I'm still terrified!! Thank you for another wonderful tutorial! (I, too, wish you'd shown the finished stitching!) 💜
I love your tutorials on video. Hmmm, how come you didn't flip the quilt and show us a close up of the finished machine stitched binding?
We apologize about that. We will do our best to get better details for you in the future. Thanks for watching!
Cathy Clark .
Please do it over
I LOVE this method!!! Saves me tons of time and is so neat looking.
Love the cute ornament quilting!!!
Lovely tutorial - professional - well prepared and got straight to the point and no waiting around. Aside from that I am keen to try this method - it looks tricky but very neat if it is mastered properly.
Dayle Matthews I will have
Thank you very much Kimberly! I did today and I could do it, I am very happy and I can't stop to smile.
Hugs and greetings from Ecuador :)
omg this just simplified my least favorite part of quilting by 1000 Thank you so much for this video!! :)
Thank you for showing clearly how to bind a quilt. Your instruction are excellent. Many thanks. Barbara Lamanuzzi
Hi Barbara.
YES FINALLY I KNEW THERE WAS AN EASIER WAY!
I just did this technique and it cam out good only thing I did different is once I flipped the binding over and started stitching next to it I used a stitch in the ditch foot and just guided it right a long next to the binding and it came out good.
Thanks for the quick response and have a great day! 😎
You as well! Happy quilting.
Excellent tutorial. My binding came out perfect.
Hello Kimberley, thank you for this helpful and clear tutorial for machine binding. 😊
I have been searching around, this is very clear.
I Love your tutorial but I wish you would have showed the finished quilt on the back side. Awesome tutorials though, thank you :)
Yes, that's what I was thinking
i guess it's pretty off topic but does anyone know of a good website to watch new movies online?
@Crew Axl i use FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
Thanks for the video. It explains so well how to do the binding.
Great tutorial! Very clear directions, thanks.
I would have liked to see what the thread or sew line looked like on the back. could you show that?
Hi Barb.
Great binding tutorial!
Thank you for this tutorial !
Can you attach the binding to the back side and then fold over to the front of the quilt? That way it's just top stitching to the front?
spongebobtanu Yea you can do it however you like I just did a mini quilt and did it that way by accident but I liked it in the end
That’s how I do it.
Thank you for the tutorial! I am wondering about taking off the pins since they're underneath. I'm a beginner in quilting and sewing. Could I suggest that you show us how you do it in the future? I'm a visual person and it helps me when I see itThanks again for the tutorial! 😎

thank you for telling on which stitch length to use.
thank you for sharing the machine binding technique!
Your tutorial on how to bind a quilt was the best I've seen! I'm new to quilting but you made it easy even for me thank you so much, I will definitely be following you!
Need to see the back side before trying to see if it looks good....
Was that difficult to sew it from the front while the pins were pinned in the back? Do you just sew over the pins? TFS
Do you remove your pins as you sew, or, do you remove them when you are all done sewing? If you don't remove them until the end, do you sew over them, or do you ease over them manually?
Thanks so much for sharing another great tutorial and for your help.

Kimberly Jolly Thanks so much for letting me know! I don't sew over pins either. Love your tutorials :-)
I love the hot air ballon spatters on your quilt. Can you tell how this was done. Thank you
Can you show the other side how it looks.

This was really great! How do you trim your quilt so that there is 3/8 inch of batting left out? Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jennifer - simply line up your ruler with the edge of your quilt top, measure 3/8" and trim. This will leave you with the perfect amount of batting to fully stuff your binding. Thanks for the question, glad you enjoyed this tutorial!
Fat Quarter Shop would you please do a tutorial on the technique to leave 3/8 batting exposed beyond the quilt top? Thank you!
Превосходно! Большое спасибо, все очень понятно
Maybe I missed something....pin on the back from from inside towards outside of quilt?? Seems it will be cumbersome, when stitching on the front, to reach under your work to pull pins out as you progress around!?!!
Thank you this might be an old video but glad i got it very good video
I like this technique, and it was helpful to watch. But it appears she is sewing over pins (on the back side too boot). It would be nice to see how she might do it today with a refresher video.
Great tutorial.
Thank you so much for this video!
Do you sew and keep, the needle in? See how a beginner I am! Thanks a lot for your pieces of advice! 😎
Yes with this binding technique we actually keep the pins in place and sew right over them. Some people however don't like to do that for fear their machine needle will break but with this method, it's the only way.
thanks for the complete quilt binding gude
Hi, how are you doing??
Thankyou for this video
If only Simplicity still made the bias tape maker! 😢 I don't understand why some other company hasn't taken up the challenge and made something similar. The prices the 'old' Simplicity machine is bringing secondhand on eBay are crazy but, then again, it signifies just how much people like the machine.
Lindíssimos seus trabalhos! !!
At the end when you tucked in your tails, did it need to be stitched right were it was tucked in? Thank you. I will try this.
+Judith Blinkenberg Its really up to you. We didn't hand stitch it on this quilt.
I want to see the other side. How would a decorative stitch look?
I don't understand the first part where you said you trimmed 3/8th inch from the quilt top.
How did you do that if all three layers were already quilted together?
Abigail Bullard if you only want to trim the quilt top or bottom you will just fold the bottom underneath as far as you can out of the way and then trim what you want without cutting the rest.

I have used this binding technique on a small wall quilt and it is so easy and neat in appearance. What is the name of the quilt on the wall behind you in the video?
+Kathleen Clark That quilt is called Blossom and its from our Fat Quarter Style Book found here: www.fatquartershop.com/fat-quarter-style-book
Love this tutorial. One question - what width is the batting you had beyond the fabric?
Hello Peggy! It's trimmed 3/8" outside the quilt top.
Can you explain the dimensions for cutting the notches at the corners of the batting before applying the batting? I’ve never seen that done before.
When machine sewing a binding you should aleays sew the binding onto the back of the quilt first.
Hello Elaine! Thank you for your suggestion.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Your instructions are so clear! A quick question- what weight thread did you use for the quilting on this quilt. It looks really nice, almost like it's saddle stitched!
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Did you sew through the pins? Let's see the back too!
FYI, the quilt labels link is broken. Great video! Thanks.
I’m wondering do you do this on a bigger quilt?
which model of baby lock sewing machine do u use?
what type of markers do you use for marking or tracing your fabric Kimberly? great videos too btw, ty for sharing them!
We use Frixion pens for marking our fabrics. Thanks for your question!
do you have them in other colors besides black? I only see black on your web page
where do you buy the 'quilter's cut and press" mats? i've never seen them in stores
Is this necessary to make the strip’s length same for the quilt?
Hello Hajjar! We recommend cutting the strips at the same length to make sure there's enough fabric.
What does it look like on the back? Can you show how you are removing the pins? Have you tried using wonder pins instead of straight pins?
Hi June.
Kimberly do you have a tutorial for the quilt behind you in this video? I love it and would like to see a tutorial for it. Thank you.
+angelheart1430 Thanks for your comment. We actually do not have any plans to film that particular block but will certainly keep it in mind for the future. That particular quilt is found in our Fat Quarter Style book and its called Blossom. www.fatquartershop.com/fat-quarter-style-book

When using a walking foot, co you leave the feed dogs up, like when you use a regular foot?
Yes, leave your feed dogs up 😊
I missed how you sewed the miter corners? I see that you go to the edge of the red fabric but did you stitch the miter corners?
Hello Lara! Here is a tutorial that may be more helpful to you ruclips.net/video/yfIhzC9f6Oc/видео.html

Interesting!
Where can I find the pattern for the quilt in the background?
It looked like you sew over the pins. Is that right?
Hello Jenny! We do not recommend sewing over your pins.
perfect !!
Hi Myriam.
I don't understand how the green binding is stitched to the front if you are sewing onto the red fabric hence the use of red thread. Please explain? I'm baffled at this point.
So my quilt is 63" x 88.5". I used your calculation to find I need 8 strips. How long are the strips?
40" or 42" long. Thanks!
Width of fabric
i WANTED TO SEE THE BACK OF THE QUILT. WAS IT CROOKED?
I don't understand how. You trim your quilt before machine binding. Your video says three inches. From what starting point. How did you arrive at three inches?
Thanks
ENickel
Hi Marcia, We trimmed 3/8" away from our quilt top before we started. That leaves 3/8" free.
what about the pins when you are binding the back???
Hello Pily! This video only shows machine binding the front. It you want to see how to fully machine bind we have this video available ruclips.net/video/dk-dgayUHtI/видео.htmlsi=MMBY4PZSLU5kkWCC
Do you remove the pins as you go? Looks like you do but it’s not in the video.
Yes, we always recommend moving the pins before it reaches the needle.
