Thank you so much for this video! This "no thread error" has been driving me for crazy for a long time. My Bernina manual has no information on why this happens or how to fix it. I am so grateful for your straightforward, easy to understand explanation and fix.
I absolutely LOVE that you show us how to do simple system checks/repairs/adjustments. I was at a Bernina Mastery class and the teacher and the mechanic were there. I stopped to clean my machine and found a lint ball behind where the bobbin housing is. You had shown us that handy dandy thin tool to get in there to remove the visible lint. I pulled it out and the teacher looked mortally wounded when I stuck it in there. "You CAN'T do that!" I said I could and that a top notch Bernina mechanic named "Bernina Jeff" showed me how. The mechanic rolled his eyes at her. I got a huge lint ball out of there and then went to oil the machine with your oil bottle. The mechanic's eyes lit up! He really wanted one so I gave him your website. The teacher was also upset that I could buy/use oil that wasn't from Bernina. I showed her the video where you tell us what kind of oil that magic liquid is! I am very mechanically minded, grew up in my dad's auto repair shop. I love machines. I also have a brain and would never attempt to fiddle with any of the electronics. Thanks for all the tips and tricks!
I have watched all his video but missed the tool for removing the lint behind bobbin. Which video/ tool was that? (I have almost everything from his shopify store already)
You are so correct. My local shop takes 6 to 8 weeks to even look at your machine and starts at minimum $110 and it isn't enen fixed and something else will be broken! It is ridiculous and another 6 weeks to fix the error message they created! Sad
I live in Montana 2 hrs from my Bernina dealer and I have been fighting the upper thread sensor for a couple months. The first time I disabled and then took to dealer for repair. They said it was full of lint and showed me how to blow canned air in the front slot. That was never the problem, it stopped working almost as soon as I got home! Today I found your video and had my machine fixed in about 10 minutes! Thank you for your detailed tutorials!
Jeff, you are amazing. Thanks for helping us older folks fix this instead of hauling the heavy machine for this easy fix. Our fix it guy always says bring it in! It’s too dang heavy! Ha. Keep up your great help!
I appreciate this level of help and I did all the steps...everything was in place. I've had a Kaffe 770QE Plus for 2 day and got the empty thread message repeatedly. I have had a 1230 and 1530 for over 30 years and never had to open either one up so this makes me a little nervous about my ability to just sit down and sew all day. There's an old saying, you can''t own 1 Jaguar, you have to have 2 so you have one to drive while the other is in the shop. So I drive a 2010 Rav4 that never breaks down. I hope I don't have to wag 2 machines to retreats so my sewing won't be interrupted. :)
Thanks Jeff. This video helped me fix my check spring. I'm disabled and getting my machine in the car and a 2 hour round trip to the shop is a huge undertaking. I also helped another lady online by directing her to this video. I appreciate you giving us hints that help our machines run properly!
You just saved me from driving two and one-half hours to the repair shop. I SOOOOO appreciate your classes. I try to watch every single one of them. I need to call and place an order for a few things from your store.
Hello! I have had two busy days with sewing and grandkids and now I get to sit with my hand quilting and watch! You are such a wonderful treat to listen too and so knowledgeable. I hope you have a beautiful and creative week ahead! Thank you for posting this video!
I just bought a Bernina 790 crystal edition. I have been getting that error ever since I got that machine and had no idea. I just X out of it and keep sewing. It keeps coming back on. Sometimes I turn the machine off and back on and it stops for a while. Thank you so much for posting this video!! Now I know what is the problem. I was beginning to think I got a bad model (and you know how much they cost)!! I'm going to turn my sensor off until my next trip to the shop. Your teaching is wonderful!
Thank you so much for explaining why I keep getting the error message indicating no upper thread. I didn’t repair it but shut the code off as you suggested and it should get me through my Christmas project.
Thank you Jeff! This happened to me the other evening just before I left on vacation. I was going to phone you when I get home, but now I will just turn the sensor off. I was baffled because I had a full thread spool and great stitch quality!
By Annie stiletto is a game changer. Love the screwkeydoo too. And the scissor holder is wonderful. I love all the gadgets BJ sells in his shopify store. Oh and the little 2$ clip is priceless in the value/utility it adds
I had this very problem just yesterday. I turned the machine off for about 15 seconds, then back on (reboot), and then removed the thread and rethreaded it. That fixed the problem. After watching your video I took the head cover off just to check the spring and all is fine. I suspect in my case my thread just jumped out of the spring. But at least I know what to look for in the future. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. You are so awesome 👏 with how you care about the problems we as sewers might have with our routine sewing. ♥️
Thank you Jeff for your generosity in educating us all on our Berninas. Please notice that the description box for your shopify address is misspelled. It reads Bernna-Jeff
Thank you for all your information, Bernina Jeff! You are always informative and helpful. Your sewing classes must be amazing. You always keep us informed! Thanks, again! 😊
Bernina Jeff “Thank You “ for your tutorials! I will be needing to buy these new tools that will be very useful for all of my sewing machines. Thank You 😊
Thank you so much for all your great tutorials, they are so helpful. My machine keeps telling me there is no thread and without your tutorial I would have been lost. I can turn it off with the settings but I don’t know about fixing the flag but I’m gonna see if my son can come over and watch the tutorial and help me fix it. Thanks again, your the best!
Thanks, Bernina Jeff. Great video. I struggle every time I have to take that dammed head cover off. I'll be referring to this video the next time I have to do it. So far my spring continues to perform well (knock on wood). No, I didn't know I could change to zigzag on the fly (if I have the correct stitch plate for zigzag in place, smiling broadly). You DO have some very cool tools! BTW, I bought an LED light bulb from you for my 830 Record and WOW! Let there be LIGHT!!!
Jeff, your videos are very helpful and very clear. I appreciate the time you take out of your day to provide this information even when many who view are not your customers. That’s excellent service and greatly appreciated by me. I do have a question regarding problems with the winding the bobbin on the 790. I’ve found that although it is easy to wind, it can cause problems with bird nests on the underside. Can you provide a video that offers the correct way to wind the bobbin for consistent sewing quality? I’ll be most appreciative. Bless you!
You might be winding the bobbins fine. Little nest on the bottom side are from the tails of threads at start. Pull the top thread to the left under the presser foot every time you start to sew even hold on to it
Thank you for the helpful information! Question for you…I have a Bernina 640. It was skipping stitches and the upper thread was shredding. My dealer serviced it and said it was fine until about 35 min into an embroidery sample when they said the check spring broke. They are telling me because of this I have to pay for a new the top tension unit to be replaced. Can the check spring not be replaced individually?
Thank you so much for the helpful videos, they have saved me quite a few times. I am at least 70 miles from my technician to fix my machine. I do have another question, since I have the 770QE with the embroidery module, how often should I take that top cover to off to vacuum inside there, if any? I use your oil and make sure the bobbin area and the case are oiled at least once a day. I want to make sure I can keep my machine as clean and free of problems since I wait once a year to have the maintenance on it.
Thanks for this info .. i just took my machine to a.local shop and the said the thread sensor was turned off, but I had no idea how that had happened or how to rectify it... Now I know!
this is helpful, thank you! However, I would think Bernina would work to fix this chronic problematic sensor spring thingy. I had an 820 for 12 years with the same issue. Then I just bought the 770 plus and it has the same problem, as well! Any idea if they are working on this?
Jeff, I am getting that error intermintently; however, one of my thread guides near where the needle inserts came apart. I have the little metal piece, but I can't figure out how to snap it back on.
Hi Bernina Jeff. Can you do a video on how a the automatic threader on Bernina 570 looks. I bought one recently and it’s already damaged (I’ve been quilting) and in a the video on how to fit one you suggest l keeping them as they can be repaired. 00
Thanks, another great teaching, question- I will sometimes get a loop on the back of my work while strait stitching. It doesn’t happen very often so it is hard to figure out why it is happening. Have you had any other customers that have complained about this. It is so hard to show my dealer because I can sew for a long time without it happening and then it will happen again and again right in a row. Thanks

Hey Jeff - I have a follow-up question, if you have time ... If I've gone thru the process that you shared (twice) and found that the little wire has not come unsnapped from the little black plastic part and seems to be in the right position -- but my thread continues to come un-threaded out of the little wire hook/spring and I get the top thread error (and can see it is affecting my stitching) -- what am I to do next? I have threaded and re-threaded, tried other thread ... and I'm only sewing at less than half speed. Is it time for some other repair?

Does BERNINA have a presser foot that has a1/4 inch measuring slot on side
The #57 and #57D feet both have a metal guide on the side. Is that what you mean? It helps you get a perfect 1/4" seam?
How about a scant quarter inch? I am having trouble finding the best way to achieve that.
The foot is sized at 1/4 inch
same solution for qe 570?
Not really the head cover does not come off sorry
thx
Cannot even imagine doing tht
Is it really okay for us “lay people” to take the machine apart and fix this ourselves? Just asking. Also, is it really okay to just turn that off, so it doesn’t come up so often? TIA
You just taught everyone how to void their warranty. Taking any of the covers off VOIDS the Bernina Warranty!!!!
Every dealer has their way of doing business and enforcing what they believe why does Bernina give you the tool?
This is something that people should not do, you shouldn't be fiddling in those areas of your machine, you could easily damage something in there. There is a reason that BERNINA techs go through so much training.
shopify is telling me your shop is not available. 🥲🤔 I hope this is a temporary problem.
