I moved to Scotland 2 years ago - from England - I left everything and everyone behind. Your video resonated so much. I live a very simple life, near the beach - go on nature walks, bake bread, crochet and I am living my absolute dream. I, too, stopped watching the news 25 years ago and it haven't missed anything! I never get tired of being on my own. Peace is everything.

I totally agree! I stopped watching years ago, but I still hear enough of the important stuff to know what's going on. I am the same as you, Molly, I have difficulty disengaging from sad or awful stories, especially if there's no real way to help. I also believe that there are many more good stories out there than bad, and I choose to focus on those. By the way, that was a lovely walk in a most beautiful place, with the most beautiful Skye!

I am 14, and sometimes I wish I were as kind as Anne from the Green Gables was. She was a sweet, kind and caring soul. I want to be like her, but, people doesn’t appreciate that :(( My classmates say a lot of bad things, and I needed to get a tough skin in order to exist in the same class.. It’s sad, because of the people who is around me I wanted to kinda get rid of my sensitivity. But now I understand that it wouldn’t be me then❤

Believe me, dear fellow, you won't stay in this class forever and you won't be forever in the same situation. Those circumstances change, you'll find people among which you'll experience acceptance and empowerment as well. I like to think that meanwhile, you are getting the informations you need to discern what is appropriate for your own thriving and what you need to do when you are in a challenging place with challenging people. We can't pretend those don't exist, can't we? It's wonderful that you at 14 are aware of your sensitivity and found this channel, where you can read a variety of experiences. To me it's a gift that requires ones to center, to align with one's true values. Therefore it's an ongoing adventure of finding out who you are at your core. I trust that and I trust you.

I am a HSP and would love to have a lifestyle like yours. I wish I could just escape from having to work in an office - but I have not found a way to do this. But I might need to soon because on Friday I had a total meltdown due to very extreme pressures and weights on my mind - worries about various things and not having anything at all positive or bright to look forward to in the future. I have camped out in the woods a few times which I enjoyed, and I love walking in the countryside. When I mentioned my struggles, I was surprised how many old colleagues and online friends reached out to tell me they are having similar issues - one was having bad anxiety attacks from a big project at work, and another has been off work for 8 months with depression. This modern life is slowly destroying people. I was working throughout the 1990s and 2000s and people were still working the same.. but something has changed lately - I think people are just under way more pressure than before... getting poorer and pushed to the limits by employers who are getting rich off of all their employees without taking care of them.

Hi there! I think you speak for pretty much all of us HSP's/empaths/introverts out there, especially in the last part of this video where you listed off the things that drain you etc. I couldn't agree more! I find my solitude to be almost addicting, but it's really where I'm at my most peaceful and fulfilled most of the time. I rarely go out socially outside of few walking groups I'm in as that is very much my 'jam' and it ticks off a lot of boxes for me (fresh air, nature, socially mixing with like-minded people etc). I went to a friend's birthday party at the start of the year and had to stay over because of the location. As much as I had a nice time overall, I was so completely drained for about 2 - 3 days afterwards. I'm sure you/many others who may read this can relate! 🤤😆

I stopped watching the news 6 or so years ago & am the happier for it. That doesn’t mean I am putting my head in the sand. If anything major is happening I will switch it on but I don’t need to know all the minutiae of other peoples lives that seems to make up the news. I love being by myself & can happily entertain myself with cross stitch, gardening, reading & generally pottering around my home. So I totally understand you.

My job as an occupational therapist for children helped me understand sensory difficulties quite a bit and I can apply the strategies that worked for kids to myself. Deep pressure is very soothing and I learned from more experienced therapists that your own bodyweight can supply a great deal of deep pressure to the part of you that is touching the support surface. That means for me, naps allow me to place one whole side of me against the couch or a bed and the weight of my body is pushing down to give me wonderful deep pressure. That helps me become more at ease and it helps me understand why naps are so soothing even if I don’t actually fall asleep. I also like to lie down on the floor or bed and prop up on my elbows to read. That gives me a whole lot of pressure to my legs and abdomen and it’s very soothing.

I live in the NW California wilderness near giant Redwoods on the bank of a river and 45 minutes drive from the closest shop. I only have to go to town once or twice per week to check the mail and to engineer at my community radio station. Ironically, one of the things I have to put on during my shift is the news but it's just our local news so it's mostly ok. I've never had a TV but I do watch things on my computer like your lovely videos... mostly I like to listen to so many interesting things through internet radio and to many good podcasts.
I can walk or ride my bike right from my front door and not hit a paved road, and it's a short drive to the "Lost Coast" Pacific ocean, my two dogs love that. I also have 3 cats who are master teachers of being chill. If I'm at all stressed about something I can lounge on my bed with them and they take turns kneading me while I read! I also love practicing Tai Chi, playing piano, growing a garden, and foraging for wild foods and medicines. I love watching all the wildlife, especially birds. There is never enough time in a day for all the "nothing" I like to do!!

I was chuckling when you mentioned adverts on TV... we don't have channels anymore; just watch Internet things (Netflix, BBC iplayer, etc.). We actually stopped watching conventional TV back in 2006, and one of the main reasons is how horrific I found adverts (would get very depressed, as they are an actual reflection of the human 'masses'). I used to hold the TV remote on my person if the TV was on so that I could immediately mute adverts. 😂 And I can definitely relate to the news. I usually just scan the newsources I follow, and even that's depressing oftentimes. Like you, I find time to read, practice yoga; walks... It is much more difficult to find peace in the city, but someday, we hope to escape to the country. We just watched the very latest David Attenborough documentary, RE: Wild Isles. I know that a decision by the BBC (with the coercion of politicians) to remove one of the shows from the series from being viewed via television, and instead relegate it to iplayer only, has had many upset (myself included). Nothing is going to get better for our planet and wildlife, and all life, until the cow in the room is addressed: animal ag; taking up an area the size of the continent of Africa; it would be a miracle to not have a climate crisis when hardly any intact ecosystems are left. Thank you for being vegan and for all you do for wildlife, and all life!

Wow. Had I accepted myself as a sensitive person and not listened to allllll the ppl who condemned or made fun of that part of me or just not had the feeling that it was “wrong” or “weird” …. My life would have been so different. It would have been filled with more confidence rather than insecurity and I would not have become the people pleasing doormat looking to others for the answers on how to “be”. (I would not have endured 30 years of abusive relationships, which I am free of now, thankfully.) I am 51 and just learning to be ok with how I am. I changed jobs recently, from wildlife biologist to a big company (for the money) and it’s full of young, non-nature people, who look at me as if I have 2 heads but that is ok now. Thank you for sharing your videos with us. They are beautiful in every way.

I've been teaching myself how to crochet, as a form of meditation. It's been helping me tune-out everything flying around in my mind, to only focus on one stitch at a time. I don't have a TV and I too don't watch the news because of exactly the same reasons you pointed out Molly. I find it overwhelming and awful world events are beyond my control. I make it a rule to try and only worry about things within my circle of control. I have social media but that is really to be inspired and connected to what's on locally. I read loads, cook, listen to music, take long walks in nature every day, take photographs, meditate, exercise, and do outdoor swimming. I feel more connected to the world that way without having to listen to negative news. I like your idea of being honest with friends when they invite you to things you'd feel overstimulated by because I've previously always just lied and said I was busy. I know that sounds awful but I am only just coming to understand how I am so I think from now on I will be open and honest when I don't want to attend things and let them know I'd rather meet them for lunch for example.

Since living in Brighton in the county of East Sussex, England, I’ve unexpectedly found peace from watching seagulls soaring. They do this effortlessly, skilfully along the chalk sea cliffs that rise almost vertically from the sea. Walking along the cliff top, it’s normal to have their company as they soar a few meters away just above the cliff top on the sea breeze. It’s also fun to stop and watch their incredible aerial combat skills as they tussle with each other for prime position😂 I’ve never seen any two collide and there are zillions of them😆. They are full of character and I always find myself smiling as I watch them in spite of whatever is on my mind. However, in the past I’ve had one poo on my head during a flyover, although maybe we could call that bad luck and another dive bomb me from behind to steal my pastie, so it’s not all sunshine and rainbows😂, but I do find watching their antics a great way to relax and remind me to take it easy!

I have found it necessary to keep up with the news to some extent, but cannot tolerate watching it on TV. I can read about what’s important to me with control over how much stimulation I can take in. Reading quietly is easier than listening to a person, and I select exactly what I want and how much I want. I live alone and keep my house quiet all most of the time. If I watch TV I mute the ads and keep the sound level comfortable. I have found that sound and bright lights are easily overstimulating so I’m very careful about both.

I'd never heard of HSP before you explained it, Molly. I don't know where I am on the scale. Lots of what you say resonates with me. It's heart warming that you've worked it out, and heart chilling for me who hasn't, at, I guess, double your age.
I get fatigued by stimulation too and try to live a quiet life.
I stopped watching the news decades? ago because it made me feel depressed and hopeless - fundamentally what interests journalists and what gets broadcast doesn't interest me - the endless stream of bad stuff happening, endless political argument, which isn't news, ignoring reasonable people's povs, lack of verification.
I stopped watching TV too as again, what interests media people, doesn't interest me, also due to the lack of depth. I remember how refreshing it was back in 1995 when, in my first rented house, I just didn't feel the need to have a TV. I did get one eventually and watched a lot of old films for about a decade before I'd satisfied that interest. At the time I was living in a beautiful and decrepit old cottage - if it wasn't for anxiety inducing work or lack of it, I would have been living my dream.
And the last few years (triggered by lockdowns?) there's been a heartwarming explosion of creative talent on YT and I'm watching perhaps an hour every day, so that's the equivalent of most peoples TV time, I guess.
Thank you for your thought provoking vlogs, Molly 🙏

Wow this is so amazing that I found this video tonite! I was just curious when I saw the title as to what being highly sensitive actually meant... And after doing some reading about it I have finally figured out why I am the way I am. Its so helpful to find out that there isn't something wrong with me! 😊 People were always say things to me like why can't you have this certain light on or why can't you watch that kind of movie or why can you not get over this situation that happened or why do you not know what is going on in the news, I kind of chuckled when you said that about the news in your video because I thought thankfully I'm not the only one and now I know why! Thanks so much for this video it really helped me! Love Kate

I’m 46 and I grew up feeling like an oddball because of my sensitivity. It’s been so nice to finally discover, online, that there are actually a lot of other people out there like me, and that there’s nothing at all wrong with being sensitive. In fact, we’re fortunate to be tuned into a lot of joy and gratitude that other people miss.
I stopped consuming the news a year ago, after yet another school shooting here in the US. I knew I would be completely traumatized by hearing about it continuously, and I decided right then that I was done with the news for good. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my mental health. I have a busy, often very noisy life (since I have 4 kids), but I’m learning how to carve out little peaceful moments for myself to recharge. Thanks for the beautiful video!

Nice video! I've always been an introvert...youngest of 4. Always been a huge reader. Interesting to read here many don't watch the news...I've thought about not watching news, but feel too "out of touch" when I don't; I fast-forward through some parts. I learned not dwell on bad news by sharing the good news with friends/family who I know will be inspired by certain stories. Love nature and have an upaved walking trail thru the woods adjacent to my neighborhood...such a blessing. Counted eight deer on one walk.

Hello, I am so enjoying your channel and working my way through your videos. I enjoy a peaceful life but have spent many years trying to work through the whole feel the fear, be more outgoing etc. Having changed jobs last year I now work from home and I am very happy, I like space, my own company (and my dogs) and being in a crowd is just not for me. I am married with grown up children and a few choice friends. Well done you for accepting this much sooner than I did, we don't all need to work through these issues around large groups we just need to live peacefully alone or with a select few. Thank you for your take on it all.

These are some great tips! I too am a highly sensitive person and realized this about myself several years ago. As a Mom of two girls, one who is an extreme extrovert and social it can be tricky to manage balance. Sometimes I have to do things that overwhelm me but the sacrifice is worth it for my daughter but I always try to balance it with plenty of recovery time. Being in nature, cuddling my pet and getting lots of sleep really help me.

I love this, it's really great to know that other highly sensitive people exist. I don't watch/read the news either, apart from a daily newsletter from 'The Know' a female owned company which send a daily newsletter and they always have a good news story in there which is really nice, and if I'm particularly overwhelmed I skip that day, to protect myself. It's also nice to hear that it changes throughout your life, right now I'm going through a very highly sensitive phase and I'm not able to deal with things I used to, so it's good to know that other people have similar experiences, and good to know it will probably change again at some point. Hi Molly, I’ve been a subscriber for a while and I love your videos. The one you did about being a highly sensitive person really resonated with me and I read the book you recommended and took that test, and I only dropped one point, putting me at the top end of the scale. All of that helped me so much, I understand myself so much better now, so thank you. I recently had to travel to Spain and the busy airport and flight was something I was worried about. So I wore some loop earplugs which reduce noise without completely blocking everything out and this really helped me to cope. Thanks so much for everything you do, love your channel. 🌸

You might try reading articles and the newspaper or listening to podcasts about the topics you care about. It can be less visceral but also still help keep yourself informed.
I need to take breaks sometimes too, but I have to say - the world NEEDS sensitive and caring people in the world to be aware of what’s happening and do proactive things to help those who need it most.
Watching the news may be uncomfortable, but please don’t forget your news is a lot of people’s daily reality and they can’t “tune out” or turn it off.

Molly, I so appreciated you pointing out that being a sensitive person doesn’t fall into one personality type. I am, by nature, very outgoing and extraverted but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve needed so much more time alone to recharge. I tend to hang out with people less, and when I do, deeply crave quality time over quantity. For me, recharging usually involves movement of some kind, jazz music and warm bath with a good book or a stroll along the beach (live in SoCal ☺️) Thank you for another beautiful video! Hello Molly, I am fairly new to your channel, and was glad to see this new installment today. When you were walking around the sculpture trail, I was reminded of a British artist whose work I think you might like: His name is Andy Goldsworthy. He makes "earth art", with elements from Nature that only last temporarily before melting back into the natural landscape. If you don't know of him, you could easily google his name to see examples of projects he has done in the past.
Although I don't regard myself as a sensitive person, I do think I'm an introvert and enjoy a lot of time being alone. I appreciate your perspective and awareness to protect yourself from overload. Thanks for your videos, and have a nice week.

I don't know how to categorize myself but I don't like loud noise, shouty voices, pounding musice, heavy-footedness and my brother who lives with me is all those things. It's so peaceful when he's not home. When he gets happy he's louder and the more happy I am, the quieter I am. I think the noise and stimuli sensitivity might be a trait that chronic migrainers and/or concussion sufferers have in common with some neurodivergent people. Maybe we are neruodivergent. I don't have enough knowledge to determine that. I just know that I like places like this in the video and since I live in Wisconsin, USA, I have access. Last week I went to a small nature preserve after a snowfall (2 to 3 inches at most) when the paths had melted. I saw 4 or 5 does in the distance, a buck not 3 yards from me on the path (huge and kind of scary, had it decided to suddenly run anywhere in my direction), a doe a few feet from me who started walking toward me looking for food, I assume, and maybe 15-20 bucks running behind me about 30, 40 yards? away. Deer. everywhere. It was magical. I'm so blessed to be living here where there is so much just...NATURE...all around. I grew up in southern California.
