I was dangerously close to titling this video "the sunnyv2ification of youtube", luckily I realized in time that this is the worst title of all time.
In this video I'm talking about video essay content farms, I discuss sunny's video on dream, chris and MrBeast. The video essay channels I mentioned in this video are:
The Right opinion
theashershow
big joel
jenny nicholson

SunnyV2's videos feels like my research essays in high school -- done in 2 days and twisting words and ideas from sources just to fit my thesis.
Yeah, his scripts really do have the vibe that he doesn't really put much effort into them. In any given video, half the script is him laying the background with basic facts about the situation that anyone can read off the first few links that come up in a google search and the rest is him twisting the narrative to fit his own worldview. It's all done so sloppily and the spin is barely hidden, it's genuinely incredible to me how many people don't see it.
His script is just "but the same can't be said for..." over and over again for transitions, which is really lame and boring. I do watch Sunnyv2 sometimes, only if it's just a really interesting topic.
Not to mention, the lack of conclusions for his videos. He'll be making the final point on the topic he's talking about, and then it just ends.
He use to care, now it seems that he wants views.

I remember being so confused when I watched Sunnyv2's " the dark side of Ryan's world" video which made it look like there was something bad going on behind the scenes, but in the actual video he defends Ryan's parents and says that they're doing nothing wrong and the channel is perfectly fine.
He defended Ryan's parents? Considering that his parents are shady for profitting off Ryan as a cash cow really says a lot about the problem with RUclips Kids videos nowadays.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 i mean, he seems happy as hell in all of his videos and hes growing up incredibly rich because of what hes doing, i really dont think hes gonna mind too much when hes older
@@womp47 Wealth doesn't matter because Ryan's World is not only soulless and abysmal as a RUclips content, but it is also exploiting the kid's life on camera, which is the point of why family vlogging becomes a problem in general.

@@poweroffriendship2.0 I dont watch kids content or family content, so i dont know much. What infuriates me the most about SunnyV2 is how he often highlights tweets with, maybe, 2 likes. This is a trap that a lot of creators seem to fall in, where they represent some groups opinion on a topic with just a single, tractionless tweet.
He shows diverse opinions, not just scrolling for 1 second and showing the most liked comment
Lack of interaction doesn't make such comments wrong though.
@@raceris7309but it does mean they're not necessarily the popular opinion, if the tweet had lots of engagement then it's clearly a prominent view, if it doesn't then it could just be what the creator thinks regardless of popularity

The strangest way I've seen SunnyV2 fans defend him is by basically going "he can't be cancelled because he doesn't respond to criticism ever". I've seen the line being said literally everywhere, so much so to the point that the people saying it sound like literal robots.
Like, ok, sure, whatever. But that doesn't mean what he does is somehow good or worthy of consideration. He's still a pretty terrible video essayist at the end of the day and whether or not he can get "cancelled" means nothing.
Such a statement you could say is not really defending him ... but if it's not a defense then why does everybody say it, so often, often towards people saying he's a shit essayist.
I don't think anyone is saying it in response to people who don't like Sunnyv2 videos. I think people are just pointing out how if Sunnyv2 had given some apology the people who were offended to begin with wouldn't have cared or accepted the apology and that he demonstrates the best way to respond to criticism. And him being a shit video essayist isn't an argument either, it's a subjective opinion.
But, why is anybody calling him "essayist" though?? Obviously he will pass as a terrible essayist if he's not doing essays, the same way a football player will pass as a terrible basketball player, because he's not being judged on the according merits. I don't recall Sunny to ever sell himself as an essayist per se, let alone an "intellectual". I think people might get that vibe simply from the style: authoritative tone, dramatic soundtrack, stilted accent etc. Yet he never elaborates with breakdowns and detailed arguments to explain an overarching idea, his content has always been more on the journalistic side, just reporting on facts, stories and hearsay while adding some basic commentary or opinion. Not to mention, the subject matter of his videos has certainly never pretended to be anything other than RUclips / e-celeb / general mainstream media celebrity drama and gossip, never anything surrounding world history or politics or general culture or societal topics etc... So the random association of Sunny's content with the whole RUclips essayist sphere baffles me.
In my opinion, the problem here is that we're throwing a net way too wide on the definition of "video essayist", where any RUclips content creator that makes videos talking about any subject, with a bare minimum entry level "breakdown" of the topic at hand, qualifies in our minds as an "essayist". So, again, back to the analogy with sports, that's like accusing somebody who can simply kick a ball of being a terrible football player when that person never pretended to be one.
The only time he will be responding if the people force his channel to get demonetized and can't be monetized anymore.
@@CRMdrifter > I think people are just pointing out how if Sunnyv2 had given some apology the people who were offended to begin with wouldn't have cared or accepted the apology
This is false. People do in fact want to see someone apologize and see that he or she have learned from their mistakes. SunnyV2 has learned nothing, he outright refuses to learn, and that's what makes him shit.
@@Fragenzeichenplatte Lol nope. Not a single person on the internet who was offended by the original video would watch a SunnyV2 apology and go like "wow, seems like this dude has learned and improved". They'd either take a dump on the apology itself or dismiss the apology by saying that he was only trying to limit backlash. And regardless his video wasn't transphobic and was 100% proven correct. Chris is barely featured in videos anymore and is now a much more controversial figure than he was 4-5 years ago. That's just reality. The video simply discusses how Chris deciding to become a woman will affect the Mr Beast brand and channel which is a 100% reasonable discussion to have.
There’s something so sadistic at analysing someone’s happiness and right to exist as a business decision.
Except it is. There's tons of people who are anti-trans or don't support the LGBTQ therefore they will stop watching Mr. Beast. Meaning that Mr. Beast will make less money, it's not that hard to understand. It's not sadism, it's facts and if you want to ignore facts then you are lost.
@@everyonesfavoritesejong naw they’re right. This comments pretty sadistic.
happy? that remains to be seen.
@@everyonesfavoritesejong How many trans people have you, yourself, directly spoken to about their experiences? How many do you personally, deeply know? I'm trans, I have many trans friends, and I spend a lot of time in those spaces, both online and offline. Literally all of them, myself included, are much happier after transitioning. If anything makes us unhappy, it's the constant intolerance and harassment we get from people who don't (and don't want to) understand us. Many of our biggest critics are just repeating misinformation they've heard other, non-trans people say. In my experience, people who don't support us would rather get their information about us from anyone BUT us. That's honestly, the biggest source of our frustration -- peoples' lack of understanding and unwillingness to learn from our perspective. We're honestly just tryin to get by and live our lives true to who we are, and the reason we get loud about it, is because there are many, many people hellbent on preventing us from doing that.

What used to draw me to video essays was that they were made by people who cared SO much about a topic they could talk about it for 40+ minutes. Even if the topic didn’t mean much to you personally, you’d want to watch those videos just to see that passion in action. That’s the quantity issue in play, in my opinion - now that the format is having a moment it’s just not possible to care about enough stuff to fill out an upload schedule.
right? now it seems like they're just an updated version of drama reporting youtubers.
TL;DR autistic youtubers are more engaging
>care so much about a topic they could talk about it for 40+ minutes.
That's mostly because of stupidly long openings and a majority of the video being filled with irrelevant fluff that adds nothing. At most, there's like 5-7 minutes worth of content actually watching in video essays.
>Even if the topic didn't mean much to you personally, you'd want to watch those videos just to see that passion in action

@@FloofMother I didn't see that video but yeah that sounds really low quality. If you're gonna be a "call out" channel you can't just read someone else's work and call it a day 😂
SunnyV2 really seems to be just the 2020 equivalent to Leafy is Here. He makes a video on someone he dislikes in a bland manner using the same points each time. With Sunny, it's they fell off, and with Leafy, it's that they're weird.
I've said it in another video about Sunny, but as an Aussie the way he talks is exactly like a first-year journalist student (which is subjectively annoying to listen to). I find his stuff impossible to watch because of the grating cadence, and the way he pulls source like years old reddit comments with little engagement or substantive facts to back them up.
To me he absolutely crosses that line of essayist in to drama/reactionary territory by making the same choices react tubers do. Pumping out current affair content with little investigation and even worse, doing that "just asking questions" thing while pulling comments that support the narrative he's spinning.
And he's certainly 'reactionary' in more ways than one - his videos are filled with right wing dog whistles.
The "is it worth it?" really got me. There are so many videos that have moved me, changed my perspective, or changed my life entirely- all created by people who didn't compromise their creative happiness for quick fame. But happiness doesn't pay rent, and as fulfilling as sticking to your creative truth can be, the impacts of lack of recognition or growth when others are blowing up from the fast-food style content wears down on your soul.
yeah, and especially the "everything just turned into numbers." Never before in my life this describe how the world works and makes me a bit depressed. Like, it reminds me of school when I try my hardest to study and managed to not fail but other next to me manage a 100 by cheating multiple ways when the test start and getting praised by teacher. Reminds me of workplace even, when I try so hard to even manage covering the cost of my weekly food but other can just suck up the manager and get extra paid with their work done by their juniors and all that.
Really makes you think huh
@@ilno That part was so well paced and delivered so perfectly that it was like a gut punch that you don't feel until a few seconds later.
It's a cycle we've seen time and time again, in businesses and RUclips and content creation, where someone starts with their heart in it and makes art that people connect to. And on the very, _very_ rare occasion, they'll make it big. Usually after years of working so so hard.
So I understand the desire to sell out. Not just for the money, but for the recognition, to be seen. You're already putting the effort in, likely have for a while, and you just want people to see that on a grand scale like they do the content farm channels.
But then you if you end up making it, you're not really... You. You're not making what you wanted to. You get seen, but not for the art that makes you light up and that you were putting out that made you want to be seen. And pivoting away from that is hard to do in content creation. Your new audience wants what they were drawn to. Your old audience wants what they loved.
And what do you want?
It's easy so say I wouldn't want to sell out, that I'd rather have a small following and do what I love. But when you're pouring heart and soul and endless hours into something and getting nothing much in return, it can wear you down, no matter how much you love it.
But it's worth making what makes you happy. Because you'll find people who love it.
As we've seen, the content farm channels or the creators who shift to churn and burn styles of fast food content, whilst they may succeed in the short/mid, even long term, it tends to run it's course. People want to connect with art. They want to connect with the humanity in it, the effort it took. Like Pinely said, the small quirks each creator has is a great example.
At the end of the day, we are human, and we want to learn, create, connect, love, be loved, be part of something. When we see a person light up on a niche topic and make content around it- or at least I speak for myself here- I don't care if it's not a topic I find interesting. It's their passion, their innate humanity, their art, their humour, their own behaviours on display that draw me in. I'll sit and watch because I get to see a beautiful piece of art that features a human front and centre, sharing something vulnerable and exciting, as if to say "Hey, this is part of my world, why don't you come join me in it for a while and I'll show you around?".
And that's what I love. That moment of connecting through art with someone I'll never meet, but getting a glimpse into their world, their passion, their excitement and experiences.
It's irreplaceable.
I'd rather watch a video essay on a topic I hate, made by a person, than on my favourite ever topic, written and created by mostly bots/in the fast food content style.
Cause it feels so different. It feels _lonely_.
And the last thing we need in the world right now is less connecting.
The fact that this vid is literally a video essay 😂

I love that you mentioned Defunctland. That video (and the whole channel) is proof that you can make amazing content that’s positive - and, honestly, beautiful - without having to resort to being mean, petty, and shallow. the funniest is when he pulls a random ass comment on youtube or tiktok that has 3 likes to make his point somehow hold weight. as if a random ass comment on social media is supposed to change my mind lmao

@@stevo999 What an incredibly weird thing to say. The popularity of an idea or the presenter doesn't in any way, shape or form dictate whether or not it's accurate. An argument should stand or fall on its own merits, not on the merits of the individual presenting it.
Your logic is piss poor.
6:50 kris goes by she/her not he/him
This video is from 8 months ago, she stated at the time he/him pronouns were okay for the time being, it was only after officially changing her name to Kris that she said she goes by she/her exclusively.
Nobody cares. I go by ungyshmungy/boobooshmoobo. Will you respect that just because I really, really want it? Of course not.
Nothing to do with 'really wanting something', she/her, he/him, they/them pronouns are already commonplace to basic societal interactions, and have never been conditional to birth sex. Arguing trans people should be an exception to society norms that already exist is childish grandstanding over a poorly veiled prejudice@@celwenileran2135
@celwenileran2135 bro shut up, you're not funny
@@celwenileran2135 If that’s what you want to be called, sure.
heya! little side comment, at 6:25 you say that Chris coming out as trans is “his choice,” however it’s worded as though you’re saying being trans is a choice (when it’s not), and you call Chris a “he” when her pronouns are she/her. all due respect to you! just thought i’d point that out ^
Hey, just wanna say that chris goes by all pronouns, not just she/her.
@@shurno1588she used to go by any pronouns, but a while ago she said that she prefers she/her
@@largeboi4678 Oh okay , sorry i didn't know that;
He didn't say that, he said he was "well within his right" to come out as trans. Never said anything about choice.
@_anon”decided to come out” as in “decided to tell the audience that she’s trans”
