Thanks for putting this up. I adored this film as a teenager when it often played at night. Once I tape recorded this song on a reel to reel tape recorder, but that tape (and the recorder) is long gone. Glad to find it at last.
This video is actually very sad to me. I am half German and my grandparents would tell me stories of how beautiful and grand Berlin was and how it was bombed to the ground, the hunger, the rapes.
I'm German . Maybe my English is too bad. I understand you, and I have with the events just as little to do as you. I'm too young. I do not understand phyzzique opinion. A victim is a victim, no matter what race. And many in Berlin were victims. Tell them yourself guilt? To a child who died in the bombs ?
Thank you for posting the lyrics to this astonishingly moving, haunting and beautiful song. Dietrich, like Edith Piaf, communicates and captures the essence of art meeting life. It just doesn't happen anymore.
In 1971 my folks had a new forced-air heating and cooling system installed in our house. The man who did the sheet metal work had been in the Hitler Youth Movement. I'll never forget that he told us that near the end of the war, the sky was "Black with allied planes. I never saw so many planes".
It's interesting that the English lyrics mention the leaves and flowers of the trees, amid the ruins of the buildings, because that's something I find very striking about the color film you see of Germany right after its surrender in May 1945 - the cities consist of grey piles of rubble, but a handful of the street trees in the sidewalks have sprouted green leaves, and life in fact is still present despite the destruction.

@Inky261 I admit I can't teach you a thing nor anyone who has experienced the war or its aftermath firsthand. This video is intended for those who have never seen the devastation, how much Germany suffered, and how bravely the German people rose up from the ashes. The overall message of this video was meant to be positive and life-affirming. This kind of scenario can happen to any of us, if nations continue to wage wars. I'm trying to show the horror and futility of war. I'm a Germanophile.
I na razwálina Berlina, nacnátsja nowaja wesná.
Es lebe Marlene Dietrich. Patriotin und Pazifistin in einer Person. Hätten wir nur mehr Menschen gehabt, wie sie einer war. Hätten wir heute nur mehr Menschen, wie sie einer war.
@RedGoblinus I checked the net because you asked. much of him is blocked, censored again in germany. but in a couple of years britain will release the records and then you will know more. he was not of big importance for us, he vanished 41 in a jail and was locked up again after nürnberg. he was in the papers here after his death. usually it is just everyday life here, the war is long over and our engagement in afghanistan bothers us simple people. little thoughts of the past here.
@RedGoblinus @RedGoblinus yes, you were well motivated. we had food rationing for years, electricity rationed and the occupaztion lasted for decades. it took 20 years to removes the ruins. that is how well you were motivated. thank you! and this dietrich woman marched with patton into germany and belittled us with this film and song still in 48. the british are well motivated always, be it falkland or iraque. no matter if the cause is just or not.
@RedGoblinus yes, but since we have eu our berlin transport does not function right , it did during and after the war. not a misdeed of brussels but our local government.
@RedGoblinus funny thing is: when i was a teen in the 60ties our class went to france, no probs there. we occupied them, they occupied us.... an english speaking problem. you are right with the underlaying reason but not with the duration wich depended on the russians. and as u can see, we like our peace. wanna keep it that way.
@MarcusAstranus Admit the ruins of Berlin These are in bloom as they have never been a parfum as of as sweet tomorrow That’s when you realize at last They won’t return, the phantoms of the past A brandnew spring is to begin out of the ruins of Berlin
@RedGoblinus what you don`t understand is: there was only one election in germany, after that it was a dictatorship like in many european countries of that time. and there was vökerbund, haager landkriegsordnung, geneva convention. which you did not obey to and we were the normal population who suffered. so please do not come back.
@RedGoblinus they had him locked up here in spandau all the years and then they said he died an unnatural death when very old. to us young berliners he was of no meaning. well, before the war people wanted a bike and a sewing machine and after the war a VW and a TV. that is how far the interests of average people reach. none in my family ever were in a political party, never. we went to elections, whenever they called us.
@RedGoblinus I did not remember. I think we were betrayed then and had to pay dearly for it, us simple people and history repeats itself. This time the imaginary capital wont be called Germania, though.
Germany is a beautiful and progressive country today. Yeah, our countries had differences of opinions in the '40's but that's all behind us now. I'm glad I've made many lasting friendships in Germany.
If Berlin looks like this after the devastating allied air raids and Red Army bombings, it is still pale in comparison with the fire bombing of Dresden.
@RedGoblinus Now I remember. Well, read the history book again (wikipedia might do). Wilhelm II. war just a faithful ally. Versailles treaty made/kept many nations poor. 1930 the currencies were about to break down. We had weak governments. Adolf promised better times.... no chance of electing a different government after that. Well, the currencies are breaking down again. Similar dangers I suspect. We have lost our freedom to EU.
Excellent video which shows the stupidity of war whenever and whereever. Humans should be educated and have some culture. Hopefully this will never happen again but if you look at North Korea and their attitude I doubt it.
@RedGoblinus you, i am sorry about bristol. guess adolf did it because they built aircraft there, so they couldn`t fly to germany? we did not want a war from the beginning. ww 1 was enough! and the reparation payments which we could not afford. 1930 we wanted work, not the unemployment that we had and a money system that worked. so adolf promised and got elected. and he delivered that. plus a dictatorship. that possibility we had not counted on.
What a great video, of great hopes. To see the fascist driven and destroyed, burred beneath the rubble. To let true Germans free and out into the air, to try to make an equal society accepting of all.
What do you mean 'speak' ? You do not have the right to speak freely, have you forgotten ? Tell the truth about your greatest leader ever & go to prison for up to 5 years. You know the same leader that in 1936 spoke for 98% of Germans, 99% of Austrians & 90% of the Saar Region who all freely voted for him in independently monitored elections ? Not only that, be a lawyer who defends anyone who tells the truth about your greatest leader & also go to prison for years & get disbarred for life
Marlene Dietrich was magnificent in A Foreign Affair and her performance of this song was unforgettable.
Thanks for putting this up. I adored this film as a teenager when it often played at night. Once I tape recorded this song on a reel to reel tape recorder, but that tape (and the recorder) is long gone. Glad to find it at last.
This cut was taped for a special anniversary MD booklet with two CD's. Looks like a pocket book. Nicely done.

This video is actually very sad to me. I am half German and my grandparents would tell me stories of how beautiful and grand Berlin was and how it was bombed to the ground, the hunger, the rapes.
+phyzzique And if everyone does, we can with a good conscience be criminals.
Hollo Heu You don't understand not every German was a NAZI.
I'm German . Maybe my English is too bad. I understand you, and I have with the events just as little to do as you. I'm too young. I do not understand phyzzique opinion. It was so destroyed - and has been rebuilt since. Maybe you will want to come and see it one day.
This is just a movie. Don't! A perfect movie! I could struggle my head about the new NAZI world in my country Mr. Trump!
Marlene, wat een stijlvolle vrouw en wat een gemis dat jij niet meer onder ons bent.
THE SONG IS MAGNIFICENT , but the pictures catastrophic !
Love this song and the movie too. Thanks for putting this one up
We have similar footage on our world war footage channel, i.e. very rare footage of Germany after war in 1945, in color.

Berlin in a ruined atmosphere of death, despair, sorrow and misery with nearly all of its menfolk completely eradicated in a 12 year war of attrition.

Yes, and the firebombing of Tokyo was the single most destructive bombing raid in human history.
