Puerto Rico is not in trouble because it's not a state. Lack of statehood gives Puerto Rico a huge advantage over the 50 states, that its socialist government had squandered. The U.S. does inflict damage on the Puerto Rican economy with the Jones Act, Federal Minimum wage, payroll taxes, and welfare programs, but the advantage of no federal income tax, and no IRS agents, more than offsets those negatives. Puerto Rico can be the Singapore if it wants to,, but only if it remains a territory. If it becomes a state all hope will be lost. I live in Puerto Rico now, and if it becomes a state I will be forced to leave, and take my companies and the jobs and tax revenue they provide with me.

Peter Schiff do you see any conservative movement taking place in Puerto Rico like what's taking place in the US right now with Trump Administration?

Luis Chevere the Philippines was offered territorial status the same time you were but they turned it down and look they're not a territory. No one is forcing Puerto Rico to remain a territory. Your country get certain benefits from that status and so the people of your country have chose to remain in that status.

      Tim Kennedy
      Your statement is conflicted....
you said nobody is forcing Puerto Rico to be a territory, really?
      That’s what an invasion is.....
The U.S invaded the island and made it a colonial territory long before most of the states became states and Puerto Rican Nationalists fought for independence the U.S Government hit that movement with all their weight behind it.....
Later, 1948 a new movement arose that created this hoax of a Commonwealth to fool the United Nations on thinking that Puerto Rico was some type of sovereign country in association with the U.S, wich it’s not and never has been......

      Peter Schiff
      Agree to disagree....
I agree with you on the areas where the U.S inflicts damages on Puerto Rico
but you fail to see that they get of way with it because it’s a territory.....
So maybe you could go back to your comment and eliminate the part where it says you would prefer the territory status and change it to a Sovereign Nation in association with the U.S .
      No territory status 👎🏻
State or any other none territorial.otherwise, I’m sorry you’ll be leaving, good to have you in our Island🌴 you’re welcome back anytime but don’t let the door hit you on the way out.✌️

When America won the Spanish-American War we took their colonies of Cuba Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Then the Americans gave those colonies a choice and Cuba and the Philippines chose be independent nations and Puerto Rico chose to remain a territory.

I think you could say that Puerto Rico is a socialist society that is crumbling. They have voted down statehood a few times because they don't want to be a part of the republic which will have to dismantle their existing socialist government that provides everything for almost everyone. Most people in Puerto Rico do not pay federal income tax because they are not a state. They do however receive a lot of aid from the US federal government as a territory.
