Harrenhal is cursed - but is it cursed with magic, or cursed with very bad occupants? We'll explore its unholy creation by Black Harren and its fiery destruction by Aegon the Conqueror, and how this got the curse started. This will be part 1, with part 2 to follow this Sunday to cover all the subsequent history of mayhem and madness at this most haunted of Westerosi castles.

The thought of Petyr Baelish being the next curse victim is one of the many reasons that keep me yearning for the Winds of Winter
Poor Petyr. ☹️ He's just keep things interesting.
The reader's yearn for more Baelish
Be honest if someone gave u that castle, given it's history, would u accept it? otherwise u get nothing. or u might even offend the powerful person who gave it to u
@@pIayingwithmahwii there are many similar examples of higher lords forcing extremely expensive or otherwise harmful 'rewards' on their vassals in order to demonstrate open-handedness while not actually giving up anything they want. Like Victarion rightly thinks to himself "Euron's gift are poisoned." Sometimes even a gift can be a weapon
@@ThommyofThennThere was a really good moment like that in Vinland Saga when a prince fully predicted his King would ‘gift’ him with lands that would essentially mean the death of him
I do like the theory that it’s not even cursed, it’s just people keep taking advantage of its reputation to commit atrocities.
@@xavier84623 That might be its own kind of curse, people who behave that way are not likely to have a long, happy, prosperous life.
I think there's some genuinely spooky stuff going on there, but a lot of it is a combination of, as you say, its reputation attracting people who want to do messed up stuff, and that it's an enormous castle that could probably only be correctly held by the lord paramount of a region consistently instead being given to very small houses that can't afford to maintain or defend it.
I'm wondering what your neighbours must have made of Rhaegar standing outside your apartment and explaining his controversial Harrenhal theories. 😆
Depends on which of the five kings they support. You can't expect a fair judgement from a Lannister supporter.
@@soxpeewee That’s true. Lannister fan’s would constantly be plotting to take over the entire block.
Pretty sure he lives in California, where there is no shortage of men in wigs and fruity attire yelling about fantasy lol Everyone there is a bit off, so I doubt anyone even noticed.
Lucky neighbors
@@ThommyofThenn Yup. This channel is everything a RUclips channel should be, delightfully madcap and deeply insightful.
Harrenhal is basically The Overlook Hotel from The Shining. Built on sacred ground, steeped in blood and horror, and consuming its inhabitants. Baelish is the next caretaker, all work and no play will make Petyr a dull boy. Alys Rivers is the magical Halloran character and Dani should definitely avoid the place. She's like to end up playing there for ever and ever.
Two of my favorite stories combined 🥰😭
Imagine spending 40 years building the best castle only for dragons to show up immediately after. It’s like the universe intentionally nerfed him.
Serious Karma
Aegon and Balerion literally said “Bet”
Very "Curb Your Enthusiasm" isn't it?
No big deal, these dragons. Stone does not burn.
Thick stone walls would be the best defense against dragons.
But GRRM made his dragon fires burn so hot that it melted massively thick stone walls, and get the biological tissues of the dragon are immune, lol
Also, how does a dragon even produce enough flammable ‘material’ to even sustain burning that long to melt an entire castle?
I feel like the Dragon would’ve spewed more than it’s own body weight multiple times over
Harrenhal being described as giant fingers reaching for the sky immediately makes you think of little finger, how he's always described as small and weak so of course he wants the biggest castle in Westeros, it's like those guys that buy trucks to prove something
HARREN: "BUT STONE DOESN'T BURN."
AEGON: "YOU WANNA BET?"
The last time I was this early Aegon's maesters were still drawing the map of Westeros.
And the painted table was still a wierwood sapling 😂
Anyone here watching this after episode 3 of house of dragon. That scene was awesome. Dark Souls/Demon Souls vibes!!
So Qoherys sounds like Qohor and another Qohorik will reside at Harrenhal for a time where he will be fed his own legs. Yes we will have much to talk about on Sunday 😂💀
Let's just say it won't just be Grey Waste Tim cookin this sunday!
Pass the roast goat, please
Fed his own legs like an orobouros, like how the "curse" is perpetrated.
Based on Harrenhal's black color I'm guessing it's made of basalt, a common black volcanic rock. Basalt melts around 1000-1200 degrees Celsius or about 1800-2200 degrees fahrenheit.
I was thinking it might be magical obsidian similar to the obsidian/dragon glass weapons and glass candles as obsidian obviously channels magic well. 😁 (Melting Point 1000 C)
Hematite, granite, tourmaline, diamond, agate, coral, opal, black pearl, slate, ruby/sapphire or garnet, are some possibilities I thought of too.
Hematite because it is the most common black rock and has a high iron content which id mentioned frequently.
Granite and slate are common and relatively easy to carve.
Agate mentioned in the series with a magical connotation.
Coral and pearl because of possible Deep Ones connections.
Opal mentioned as an Empire of the Dawn possibility.
Rubies and sapphires are the same stone and mentioned frequently in the series. Garnets are often mistaken for rubies...all are quiet hard and can be black. Fun to think of a solid building made of gemstone.
Have also wondered if the "fused" stone is colored cement.
@@soxpeewee the reason I assumed basalt is just practical because it's common and Harrenhal is really, really big so you'd need a lot. I suppose slate would also be possible, but although I'm not a builder, I'm not sure slate is strong enough to be used to make very tall towers. Slate is relatively weak and is usually used for roofs or floors, not load bearing construction as far as I know. The gods eye also has the look of a possible volcanic caldera so it would make sense to have lots of igneous rock in the area. Obsidian could be plentiful around a volcanic caldera, but it is glass and is much to weak to build with. As far a magical materials go I'm not so sure because that time period wasn't really known for having a lot of magic, and the Ironborn aren't really a magic using people (at least in Harren's time).
Omg the “I’m being silenced!!?!!? 😢” bit had me in stitches. And a Wu tang shirt too! 10/10 - of course the theories content fantastic as always too.
Thank you for releasing the Daenerys Targaryen iceberg podcast. This will help me through my Sunday long run!
Harrenhal and the Night Fort are two favorite creepy structures in the Land of Ice and Fire.
I love your storytelling skills ❤ I'd love to see every single fantasy battle explain by you, great work! 👍 it's like reliving a book 📖
It's like really fun storytelling, studded with good theories and interesting lore connections. Basically rolling the fun of reading a chapter into the experience of looking up quotes to find discussion threads on the Westeros forum. It streamlines the process which I personally love. I read physical books (i currently only have the gigantic paperbacks, some of which are pre-show editions that are falling apart under their own size,) and having to close them every ten minutes to look something up can take up a lot of time! So these videos are really peak content for me
All round very cool, except the temperature in Harrenhal the day King Harren fell. Even your T shirt is very cool.
Yes, let Reading Rhaegar preach.
Yet no one listens to Aeron or the Drowned God sermons
@@ThommyofThenn The drowning the life out of people during baptism could have something to do with that.

As I am thinking about Harrenhal I am hearing Brando at the end of Apocalypse Now saying “The horror, the horror “
Not the Hindenburg diaster? "Oh, the humanity!"
@@soxpeewee
The events leading up to the destruction of the airship and the fact it was so flammable make it an interesting comparison. It can definitely read like hubris; they should have respected storms more and been less stubborn in their clinging to the schedule, which I believe was set up to make more money, rather than allowing delay due to legitimate concerns such as you know...dangerous weather. Oh, and the smoking near a huge balloon of explosive gasses. I don't think there had been a major airship disaster before so it's fair enough that they didn't have much of a playbook to guide them. But in hindsight, it can seem terribly irresponsible, as the passengers learned to their sorrow
Hahaha!
Bruh the Rhaegar section was mad confusing when I heard it in glorious Dolby Atmos (gaming headphones). Thought he was in my room! Let him explain his Harrenhal theory tho!!
me too!! i thought Rhaegar was outside MY house
Every time I wander away from your channel, I regret it! It’s the best❤
❤️❤️❤️
That ghost of harrenhal art art is one of my favourite you definitely get a good scale of the place
I think Harrenhal is also a parallel to the Tower of Babel (man's hubris and an afront to the gods)!
Ok, now I think there will be a few hallucinations/ dream sequences, which can tie into alys rivers. I'm so excited for this season
Loving the high output Dave, i could watch everyday! Another banger!
Love all the work David. Been following you for years, everything you’ve built and work on is phenomenal.
That's great Matt I'm glad to hear it. Same here but only like a year and a few months
I think it’s an act 3 mystery GRRM will give us.
It’s next to the gods eye for a reason, the tourney was there for a reason. Haran may have been getting visions of the others and the wieghts and was building Haranhal for the war he saw coming, to be king of the ashes, just like Baelish.
I like the idea of Lord Baelish being taken by the curse without ever having exercised possession of the castle. Also looking forward to Lord Bolton's curse...
Feels like Titanic. First voyage, major hubris, mostly poor and vulnerable suffered. Smitten by ice opposed to fire :)
26:35 this is interesting, I had a different take. The right of the first night is an old ways rule. It was probably handed down by the first men or something and is designed to create more magical blood bastards to be sacrificed to trees and stuff. Anyway, this would mean they sacrificed him in the gods wood and attempted to appease the tree because technically they are going against the old old ways. So it’s sorta to say, “sorry, no more bastard blood, here’s one last meal of kings blood”. In the old days there were warg kings and green kings and basically every royal bloodline decadent from the first men is the same as Targaryen in that they have magically altered blood to give their bloodlines power.
Always love your readings. Aegon burning Harrenhal is powerful stuff and you delivered :D
"Blood in the mortar" - it would not surprise me if George was going for a Poltergeist feeling with haunted Harrenhal given his love of horror movies.
The Poltergeist house is built on land that used to be a graveyard. They moved the headstones, but they never moved the bodies!
Blood and bone in the mortar might be another hint to other so called cursed mega structure : the Great Wall(s), many writings and legends hint at the resilience of the Great Wall being provided by the thousands of bodies minced in the mortar. A myth, but in the ancient times sacrifices were placed at the cornerstone of structures to provide "strengtht"
What a fun idea ❤ you always find such cool ways to make your note novel and engaging to your audience. Great work on this one David. Been a long time fan, your work staying improving and remains interesting and engaging in the best ways. Many thanks, keep up the good work ❤
Oooooh cant wait for part 2 ❤
Hey Lightbringer how are you doing. Thank you so much for this. I have always wondered why more hasn’t been discussed about the Ironman controlling the Riverlands and all the lore. You have great taste in music by the way. Stay well and be easy😊
Harrenhal is cool, your Old Nan voice is cooler 🐉
❤️❤️❤️
Awesome video LML!
It takes temperatures of around 1300C/2,400F to melt a rock, turning it into a substance called magma (molten rock).
Also the melting point of Marble is about the same as Steel. 1370C/2500F give or take.
Loved the old nan voice
Harren the Black when the morning came: "Why do I hear Fortunate Son?"
I think Harrenhal was continuously occupied because it would always get occupied by someone, loyal to the Targaryens or not. The Kingswood Brotherhood, the Brotherhood without Banners, any of the many rebellions that take place throughout the years, even just ordinary smallfolk gradually settling it into a city, it's simply too much of a threat to actually leave unoccupied by royal forces
21:29 I'd venture a guess and say dragonfire on the lowest end would be 1,300°C / 2,400°F. Maybe even higher, but that's about the lowest temp to turn stone into magma.
And as it happens a potential candidate for Black Stone fits those temperatures: “Basalt melts at about 984° to 1260° and granite at about 1215° to 1260°
Come on Harrenhal pt 2!!😍😍 totally itching for it after this past HotD episode!
it's in the live stream feed!

The voice acting was very captivating! Beautiful work, man! I loved it!!
Heck yeah we need a Reading Rhaegar Harrenhal theory video! Doesn't have to be long but does have to be RR doing the narration!
Also holding Harrenhal to some extent were Tywin Lannister, Amory Lorge and Roose Bolton. Well, I'm sure Roose will end up just fine.
Oooh videos and lives coupled together, my favorite format
The video I didn't know I was missing, and we get a Harrenhall livestream!? Thanks LML! In all seriousness, absolutely love your Old Nan voice, killin it lol.
I've always thought Harrenhall would've made a great seat for house Targaryen, you know if it hadn't burned that is..
Don't forget to mention weasel soup!
Edit: Supposed "experts" like David Lightbringer - lol love Reading Rhagear
Great stream loved your intro. Specially the re-reading of the story. The voices gave it a more mysterious scary vibe. There is definitely something up at that place. With so many deaths.
10:32 Something tells me that choosing ANYONE to rule Westeros while inside Harrenhal would curse that Ruler’s reign
I can't wait to see it in all its glory in the Conquest!
I love how the visual language of HotD has improved to reflect the 'pax targaryen" but imagine how it will look for the Conquest
Harren said “I build in stone and stone does not burn” and Aegon said “Bet.”
Ah, it is going to be a good day... @LML has posted a new video! Thank you so much, David, for the well researched, entertaining, and informative content!
I must say, I am always thrilled by an appearance by our ever charming, funny, and handsome hidden dragon, Reading Rhaegar.

Great video, and an even greater t-shirt!
Harrenhal is something straight out of a Poe story. Such a creepy castle.
I'm starting to wonder if the story of dragons being born from the Moon being destroyed isn't true. I'm also wondering if Dragonfire doesn't create bloodstone when melting specific kinds of stone

OMG..I just found this channel after years and years of Got and Hot D as a fan...great work ..amazing work...the best....you should look at Warhammer Age of Sigmar lore...you would kill it in a fantasy setting and how deep you go on the details.
I love your ads! They always have me in stitches 😅
12:29 I've had the flu and the coughing fit this joke gave me was worth it 😂
I don't see why blood wouldn't make a good mortar. You mix up mortar with water, and blood is mostly water. If you have a surplus of blood, for example because you've been killing and bleeding a lot of livestock, then using it for mortar isn't especially impractical.
Ox blood was in fact historically used in mortars so George may be drawing on that very real historical practice.
If Harrenhal was in a drier locale then I might think the story about human blood in the mortar was likely but as it is next to a massive lake, it does seem unlikely, unless it was for some deliberate purpose.
Leaving this comment at 16:29, I would probably forget if I waited to the end!

Are you done doing the disaster hunter series? Or just taking a break? I like all your videos, but I really enjoyed the disaster hunter series and will be sad to see it end.

🙌
One of my favorite topics!!!! And yes….the giants built some of it.
Excellent video, one thing to point out of interest with regards to recent owners of Harrenhall is that Tywin held it briefly during the War Of The 5 Kings although he mostly gave The Mountain the run of the place, and, of course, look how things turned out for them, the curse is very welcoming indeed, furthermore besides our favourite creeper Petyr Baelish there's also Roose Bolton who even burned a mysterious book in front of Arya after reading it and spends much of A Dance With Dragons seemingly at peace with a death that shall come sooner rather than later. Something tells me he's not long for this world either, and, for the creme de la creme of scum and villainy, I am willing to bet Euron Greyjoy ends up occupying Harrenhall at some point, likely during The Long Night 2.0, dislodging him from said castle will likely represent a turning point in The War For The Dawn, anyway, amazing video, keep up the great work!
oh I like that idea of Euron occupying it! I'll bring that up with Tim
@DavidLightbringer Night King Euron's foothold on the God's Eye. I could see him taking it like Daemon did. But unlike Daemon, who spared the Strong's castle garrison, Euron might not spare whoever is haunted house sitting for Little Finger.
Another great video about David.
I really loved this one!
Reading Rhaegar is growing on me lol

Great video brother
Well i know what im doing when i get home later
Dave, you gotta see the TheNeuroticNathan's videos.... This ties to Georges 1000 world series. and clearly magic exists in this world, or that science that appears as magic works in this world.
Anyways... The biggest hint is that this is the planet of the Children, and we invaded.... The First men and the Pact occurred in The Empire of the Dawn in K'Dath, and when that peace broke down, the five forts were constructed to stop them. Also, just by reading the battles you can see that Valeria and Ghis existed during the Long Night. And it hit WAY more places... Specifically where humans lived.
Not everything we refer to as stone has the same melting point. so we would need the information about what type of stone was used in the constitution. Still there could be a lot of variation between different bocks due to inclusions , layering... Would explain the twisting and cracking part👍
R’Rhaegar been Praising Garth abit to Hard outside Harrenhal on the Isle of Conspiracies
@David Lightbringer unfortunately black rock is not specific enough to know what type it is. If we assume the rock is basalt, that has some of the highest known melting temps. Approximately 1000 degrees C, or 1832 degrees F is its melting temp.
WE NEED A FAMILY TREE FOR THE DRAGONS!!!
that's on GRRM, we have almost no info as to which dragons came from which

How could gorgen the quest take the lords right of the first night if the tullys were named lord paramount of the trident harrenhall is part of there lands too? Just got confused about that is that a mistake by George or did I hear something wrong? Great show thanks David !

Do you think there is a literal curse, or do you think places with a lot of death are just magically radioactive? Since there is power in blood, spilling a lot of it must be what causes places to be “cursed”
Maybe, but that theory would mean old battlefields would also be haunted, and they don't seem to be.
