    I laughed so hard! I, too, am a black woman who grew up in New York and married a white guy from a predominantly white country (Canada). HAIR has always been a major part of my life and discussions with other black women -- because black hair has always been so political for black women from America. But my husband is EXACTLY like Gunnar! He's always like, "I love your hair! no matter what! I don't get it! can we stop talking about it?" LOL!! I have him reading "Hair Raising" by Noliwe M Rooks and he understands a bit better now. You guys rock. Have loved watching your videos all day!

    Gunnar, is super chill, and you are so right, that just by seeing him in the video he seems to be very contemplative and thinking ahead. If there is ever an alien invasion from space, people will be screaming and running in the streets and Gunnar is the type of person who just seems like he could think quickly and say rather than running, I think I got a good plan. Awesome interview, and I was in the military with so many guys who were hardcore dungeons and dragons players, definitely a thinking persons game.

    I think it might be a cultural difference about the interest in hair maybe? My friend was saying that hair is super important to her (being Black) and her culture - she even shared a documentary for me to watch to understand what she feels. However, not to diminish at all the experience or a particular culture's feelings about hair, I feel like in general (maybe more concentrated on different cultures like not just ethnic but like groups of people like Punk, LQBTQ, women vs men, etc), hair is super important to peoples' identity (how we cut it, how we color it, style it, etc). In Iceland, I would think it would be hard to find a hairdresser who knows how to handle Black hair texture without damaging. Out of curiosity, do you have a hairstylist that knows how to handle different textures of hair in Iceland?

    • @AllThingsIceland

    How many US American chicks manage to end up with a guy like Gunnar? She is a typical, brash US American, he THINKS before he speaks and is VERY contemplative when he tries to express himself. They seem to complement each other - a very good thing! I predict a long and happy future and, being an Icelander myself, I hope to meet them (and any potential children) before I am too old (Iceland is a very small country, after all!). They are, after all, likely to travel to to Ísafjörður (and Hornstrandir in the summer) some time in the future. Please look me up...

    • @InimeKai
      @InimeKai 4 года назад +12

      Lol do you not think its insulting to call her a "typical, brash american"? Also as I imagine when it comes to second languages you need to think more before you speak than you do with your native tongue which may also be why he takes more time to respond than she does.

    • @Halli50
      @Halli50 4 года назад +9

      @@InimeKai, calling US Americans typically brash is not an insult (nor was it meant to be), it is the simple truth about "typical" US Americans. Seeing that English is my third language, I can assure you that the reason Gunnar takes his time to respond is NOT because he has to carefully formulate his phrasing in English - after all, he spent some years obtaining a higher education in the US, English will be second nature to him. He is slow and thoughtful, she is unafraid to let things fly and neither quality is bad or undesirable, they just ARE qualities people have. As I said, they complement each other.

    • @margietucker1719
      @margietucker1719 4 года назад +8

      @@Halli50 I think as a species...we tend to assign stereotypes to certain cultures, which are usually only partly true. I'm sure there are plenty of "brash Americans"...but there are plenty who are not
      "typically brash" as well. As an example--I am an American female (not a "chick") who is more like Gunnar. I am quiet by nature, very contemplative, and reflective. I think carefully before I speak, and abhor small talk, and really don't enjoy conversation unless it's an interesting, meaningful topic. And there are many Americans just like me. I no longer believe in cultural stereotypes. Having heard and read---all my life --that the British are known for being cold, stoic/unemotional, and snobbish--I had to revise that opinion once I came to personally know many British people throughout my lifetime. I had to toss those stereotypes out the window. Just one example of how cultural stereotypes can be misleading. There is no "typical American". There is a "stereotypical belief" of what an American is like. Within a population of 350 million people--there is going to be a WIDE diversity of personalities types, and characteristics. Nobody speaks of all the millions of quiet, low-key Americans who would rather be home reading a good book, walking their dog, or working in their garden--loving nothing better than peace and solitude. And being totally UN-brash.

      @@margietucker1719, you are absolutely correct about the fallacy of stereotyping. We are all INDIVIDUALS, each with his/her particular traits. We are simply influenced by the kind of societies we are raised in - which is probably why you will find a higher percentage of "brash" people in the US than in e.g. Finland. Conversely, you will find a higher percentage of introverts in the Nordic countries than the US, but you will also find brash extroverts in Finland - and introverts in the US. I have never found such traits to be annoying either way, if anything a reticent Finn can more of a challenge than a brash US American.
