I'm originally from New Zealand, I went to high school and university in Brisbane, Australia. I got a job teaching English as a second language in Chiba, Japan. I met my American husband, who was a physician in the Navy. I was working just outside of Tokyo and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. The distance was like I was working just outside of New York and he was in Florida. We had a long-distance relationship for about a year taking most days on the phone and flying to met each other every other month. While on vacation in Hawaii people asked if we were on our honeymoon! While on vacation in Australia together he proposed to me. We moved to the US and at first lived in Omaha, Nebraska, where he is from and got married. He had a variety of temp jobs in the mid-west. Then he got a job in North Carolina. Now we have been living in North Carolina for 17 years! We have been married for 18 years and have been together for 20 years!

@@mckohtz I also have an aunt, uncle, and cousins in Eastern NC. They live in Greenville. Much of my family attended ECU. I love the mountains here, but it's been nice to visit them a time or two, not too far away from the coast.
I’m American, my husband German. We met in the States on a blind date 26 years ago. We are married 20 years today. I moved to Germany with three suitcases in 1999 and have been here ever since. Life is such a crazy ride sometimes!

I am Puerto Rican American and married a Finnish man. We met when he was doing research in the US and I ended up moving to finland. We were also long distance for a time but I was too happy with him to just give up.

Meskarune I’m 1st gen Puerto Rican American. My aunt came to America then sent for my mom. They were teenagers and the 2 sisters married 2 American Irish boys who were quite good looking. A friend of mine saw a pic of my dad when he was young. She said “is that your brother? Wow! He’s cute!” I said “no that’s my dad when he was my age.” She goes “darn I was going to ask you to introduce me.” I thought that was pretty funny. Never thought to tell my dad that. He would have been embarrassed!

UGH! How do you not say “umm” or “uh” at all? Why kind of sorcery?
😂 I was in Toastmasters for a while and they used to count our filler words. They do slip out sometime but now I just wait when I don’t know what to say instead of filling the space with an unnecessary word.
All Things Iceland It’s mesmerizing!! Definitely mastered a great skill!
My 10year old kid can't utter a single sentence without inserting several "ums" into it, and now I'm doing it. He's also turned into a raging uptalker, you also employ uptalk but in a pleasing proportionate way. If you ever tire of engineering perhaps you can teach kids how to speak, seeing as you do it well!

@@kristinjayne6720 It is that vile practice of turning every single sentence you utter into a question. It particularly plagues tiny house programs on RUclips. Every sentence I hear is a question? And it drives me nuts? And we need to reinstate the Gulag for uptalk transgressions?

@@brittanyedwards6530 The Turkish people in general i felt were welcoming and friendly. Even with my diffrence of religion/race. His family was the same. The men I would say are like all men. Be wary who you meet always but give a chance take it slow.
I love that this relationship evolves slowly. Being friends and really liking a person is such a wonderful foundation for a relationship.
It’s essential, imo. And it helps ensure a smoother transition if things end because you still have that friendship.

Haha pretending to have an English accent! I'm British and when I was younger, I would pretend to have an Australian accent whenever I went out....no idea why I did it haha glad to hear that there are other people in this world that did this too! Just a bit of fun.

It's the actor or actress in us all. Mainly, I believe we love differences. As for myself, I always love to have a boyfriends from a different state, different country or different continent than my own because, I love accents that are different from mine. To entertain myself, I love to imitate my ex boyfriend's" accents, their happy and angry faces. It's so hilarious to me because their facial expressions are so comical like the best cartoon character ever made. 😂😏🐯🐵🐸🐒🐷
Lol ... Listen I'm a Bahamian and I frequently used accents for the fun of it. Loved doing the British accent. In High School I fooled my friend's aunt to letting her go on a trip cause she thought I was the British Social Studies Teacher. She bought it and gave her consent for my friend to travel😁
When I was younger I would always change my name to something I believed was more mysterious. Veronica was my favorite. 😂😂

I never knew that as well. He was a whole married man and divorced and then another failed relationship. That's a red flag from the beginning. Genuinely thought this was the first marriage for both. On a brighter note, Jewells looks really good for her age. This video was posted 4 years ago so she must be around 36...I thought she was like 29 or so.

I met my current guy in London, last year. I actually went to spend time with another guy I met in NY, and he totally flaked out on me. I ended up meeting this guy at the tail end of my trip. I had no expectations, I just wanted to get out, and he took me to this dive bar. I said, "Do you want some ice cream?"" He agreed (although he says he was ready to go home by then. He spent the rest of the night eating Ben and Jerry's and talking. He whispered in my ear, "Let's stay in touch." And we have., everyday since last October. I plan to go back this October. I have to do quarantine, but he is going to take care of me during my quarantine. So we will see what happens. As far as me moving to UK? Ha! I don't know about that, but life is funny.

This is great! I’m currently in the process of making my move from NY to Iceland, where I met my boyfriend. I have so many questions yet this is the first video I watch. We should totally create a group to share our experiences and a beer (or wine, etc) haha.

Was his English teacher from England? Many times overseas they learn British English and sometimes they pick up the accent.
I'm twice divorced and I'm a sucker for how I met my spouse stories. I don't think of myself as romantic but I have honestly fallen in love twice and fell out of love for diff reasons but I think of myself as being ahead of the game and honestly I just want to hear feel good stories between couples. Share in their joy.
You will end up with whoever you are meant to be with, and when it happens it will happen.
You should watch Joyce Meyers. Im divorced too and watching her just did something helpful especially her videos about her marriage.

2:48 a lot of Europeans who learn English as a second language usually learn it through British videos/audio clips/ or teachers. Vs the American way of annunciating.

Yep! When I lived in Belgium and was still learning Flemish, everyone had an English accent when speaking English. The only problem was when I would go to visit London, I'd immediately think "THIS is not English that they are speaking!". The cockney and other London neighborhood accents were just crazy!!! Nothing like the movies for sure. lol

Long story…..I was on detached duty from the US military, working for the US State Department. I was posted to Nepal initially. Over the next 2 years, I worked security details in Pakistan, China (PRC), and South Korea. Unfortunately, I was sent back to Nepal after 2 years on a critical mission that was Confidential. The good news is I met my future wife there who was an Indian national teaching at a private girls boarding school. We married in Kathmandu before I returned to the US after one year. I never, never could have possibly imagined going to one of the remotest countries in the world and meeting my future spouse. She was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I love stories of unlikely couples... well, honestly I love couple stories in general, but I especially love them when people from different walks of life meet, fall in love and make it work.
I'm new to this channel but I'm loving it so far!

So this is really random, but one of your videos was in my feed. I thought you looked fun and bubbly, so I watched it then searched your page and watched this one. I’m pretty sure I took your husband’s class in college when he was in Indiana. If so, he was an amazing professor. To this day (I’m 31) I’ll have something he said in class come to mind. I know this is random, but I always wished that I could express my thanks for being a great professor. I’m glad you both are happy and well, and I’m subscribing to your channel because you’re so fun! As an RPI grad, I was not expecting the school to show up in your story. This is a sweet story!
RPI is definitely not a mainstream campus and is not for everyone or for the whole year. After spending a summer doing research there, I felt like I knew what I needed to know about Troy and most of Albany. When I returned to my alma mater my French professor told me how his son was trapped in a snowstorm while in school there. He said: Il ne m'a pas plu. Or something like that... But it was an awesome experience and met wonderful people there. And I would do it again while learning more of the area's history.
That is such a sweet story! I can relate to the weekend activities at RPI. I went to WPI for my engineering degree in the 1990s. It was 11:1 guys to girls then and weekend activities consisted of drinking and maybe watching movies on the VCR lol. Things had come a long way even a decade later from the sounds of it if it was 3:1 when you were at RPI. I met my husband in college. Same thing, we were really good friends first. That's the best way to do it in my opinion!

I am an honest person and go to church but do not think of myself as being deeply religious. I have been widowed for almost 5 years. I am very active and healthy and although I am older than you most people think I am in my early 60's when they meet me. If you are interested in more conversation I will give you another way to communicate.

Whew! Ok ! I feel better now that I know “the rest of the story.” Cute, funny, romantic. I met my husband in Germany. We were both in the Army and he was my boss. Definitely married wayyy too fast. I never knew he was the picture beside the word “homebody” in the dictionary. Which really sucks because I like to travel (would prefer to go with my husband). But we’ve been together 45 years. God had more to do with that than anything. I ended up moving to Indiana which after having lived in the ‘burbs of Philly was difficult. So now we’re just trying to get him through chemo and I thank God he’s doing well. That is all that matters. Your hub sounds like he’d be interesting to talk to although he probably doesn’t see himself that way and I suspect part of the problem saying his name had to do with the vodka! Thanks for sharing. Definitely worth listening to just for the fun of learning about a different country and people. Your sis was spot on about arguing although my hub won’t argue and sometimes that makes me want to argue! 😝
C There are many women going though the same thing on Facebook. There are lots of " over 50 women" groups with ailing husbands. and single traveling women/ rv women groups also.
These groups may be good support for you now.

As an Australian, when I was studying in Iceland for one month I met an Icelander, we fell in love, and we both intended to work towards marriage. I returned to Australia & we conducted a long distance relationship. I thought of transferring to Haskoli Islands to finish my PhD & he thought of transferring to a uni in New Zealand to finish his Masters. But ultimately, the distance was too difficult, we were a bit too young (26), we both had our own family commitments at home. So it didn't work out. He went on to marry an amazing woman, have gorgeous children, and I have met them all. We have a lovely friendship. But sometimes I do wonder: what would my life have been like if....?!

i can tell you why he had a english accent... in lot of icelandic elementary school there were uk english speaking teacher teaching so icelandic people learn to speak british first :D , i learn both uk and states english and also icelandic people do tend to put extra into words with R and such so they start to sound like scottish :D , so i can swap my english if i feel like it :D
My mom learned British English in Colombia because she thought it would make more sense to learn for m the source of the language. When my parents came to US, went thru linguistic culture shock. Lol.
FYI He speaks English - what we speak here in the US is “American” or “American English”. We (the US) aren’t the center of the English-speaking world.

Coincidentally I also married an RPI grad. He lived in a house that was condemned not long after he and his roommates moved out. He does not have fond memories of living in Troy...especially after the winter when the furnace went out or the time that the basement filled up with sewage. 😆

I think this popped up in my recommended for a reason! I've always had this inkling that my life long partner is not American, like ever since I was a little girl I thought this lol. Of course though, as we get older we start to believe those little feelings less (and we're told that it'll never happen) and get caught up in the "but how?" With COVID that "but how?" has been coming up a lot lately, and very intensely, and then this video popped up! If it's meant to be, it'll happen, don't get fixated on the how. Thank's for sharing a great story of love in life and happenstance and fluke events and yet still trying to remain yourself while the tornado really hits the fan of emotions and reality. I had a similar story myself back in 1986 in China when I met my soon-to-be wife. I never told it in public though...I'm scared I wouldn't give it justice due to my lack of expressing myself in a personal and emotional way. Anyway...your story encourage me and gives me hope that one day I will be as brave as I find you to be and get it out there? I am 61, caucasian, european and proud of my three "hun-xue-er" which literary translates to "mixed-blood-kids". My name is Torbjörn and maybe Gunnar could help you trying to pronounce it. I just discovered you a few days ago. Your new Icelandic life is fascinating. I just visited Iceland last month from 10/18/22 and was there for 9 days. I TOTALLY FELL IN LOVE with that country. I’m 71 years young and I’m not swallowing that pill about “oh, it’s all friends and all that.” You just don’t fly to a different city to spend “time” with a friend and the hug was like, oh, it just felt so right, da, la, la. My fiance and I have been long distance for 3 years. COVID has changed our plans so we were supposed to close the distance in 2020 but China, ironically. I travelled to Iceland 3 years ago and absolutely adored it. We went in winter in order to see the Northern Lights. I had lived in the Canadian Arctic so had seen them before but reallllly wanted to go to Iceland. There, i really learned to appreciate the power of Nature. It was deeply impressive. I want to go back but covid.....
