- There are a lot of things to keep in mind when you are planning a trip to Iceland, such as how to pack for the weather, the local etiquette, how to see everything on your list in a given amount of time and etc. Because it is a decent amount to think about, lots of travelers to Iceland end up making similar mistakes. in this video I pinpoint seven of the most common ones and give you pointers on how to avoid them. From an Icelandic perspective this is very interesting. It helps us to know how foreigners think so we can be more understanding....btw the 6 ft rule is more of a lifestyle then anything related to covid. if you are close enough to punch in the face then you are to close

As a New Yorker I have a 6 feet rule distance even before the pandemic, more like a sense of common courtesy and people here in NY are not understanding that.
It might be mentioned that you can only buy a limited amount of alcohol in the Duty Free Store.

Glad I only made 2/7 of the mistakes on my trip (tried to do too much and didn't pack enough changes of clothes; there should be a sign at the airport "Welcome to Iceland, You will get wet!")

Regarding umbrellas. A bit of an exaggeration. It's very easy to buy cheap umbrellas in
Iceland, actually. Of course you don't try to use them in windy weather, but in Reykjavik,
for example, it often rains in calm weather, and some walking paths, like Laugardalur,
are low-lying, and quite protected from the winds.
I walk in Laugardalur every day, and automatically take an umbrella with me if it looks like
it's going to rain and the wind is moderate or barely there. If you just make sure you know
how strong the wind is, you can make even a cheap umbrella last for months! You can even use it when it snows in calm weather, which is not uncommon ...

I visited Iceland in 2013 and saw a reinforced umbrella in a shop window. Coming home again I regretted not having bought one.
Showering before the pool. The same goes for Sweden. Sadly there are quite a few people nowadays who do not know about it, or simply don't give a d**n. I stopped going to the bath house.

I remember when as a kid learning how to swim at the YMCA ( are those still around?), they had us shower before we went into the pool. But we showered IN our bathing suits. It was just a rinse. Later I understood the requirement. However, they didn't have us do a whole exfoliating with soap and loofah shower!!

Today’s video was really helpful and informative and it is keeping my excitement level HIGH for our eventual trip to Iceland! We had to reschedule from going this fall until later next year in hopes that things will be safer next year. Your personality and energy and enthusiasm make all your videos SO much fun to watch! Your pronunciation of the Icelandic language is SO impressive - your in-home personal coach has probably helped with that! 😉 I’ve been working on learning Icelandic using the Drops app for probably 9 months now and I’m hoping my Icelandic pronunciation is pretty good by now. After all this, I’ll probably get too shy to attempt speaking it while we’re visiting! 🙂

They have people monitoring in the shower rooms that you've indeed showered. If you come out dry, rest assured you'll be going right back in.

That’s how we easily identified tourists when I was a kid. We always just had a jacket, always!
OFF ROAD driving is a big no no in Iceland. It can get u in a lot of trouble and big fines.

All true. I came during Christmas in 2016 and the weather was frigid and when it did rain and snow/sleet the elements blew sideways. I stayed at the Canopy and when I asked for an umbrella I got pitiful stares. At the Blue Lagoon I was directed to shower with soap in the nude. Not a big deal BUT, not being used to the cold, I dried off and attempted to walk down the steps into the waters and an attendant thought I had not showered. She shooed me back and then explained to her I had showered but was not used to the frigid air and dried off. I got the nastiest look before being shooed into the lagoon waters. The Ring Road... I book a black sand beach trip, a glacier trip and ATV trip. All cancelled because some ding bat ignored the warnings and got themselves killed because their car went off the road so for almost my entire 7 day stay the road was closed down. However each company gave full refunds. Beautiful place. Beautiful people and I thank God to this day for 66 North where I purchased a Drangajökull coat 2 Vik jackets and gloves. Even in NYC that coat is life. I also don't have to keep in closed as the weather in NY is not like Iceland. Great video.

Do pools in Iceland not have either chlorine/chemicals or salt in them, for keeping them clean? I know some people do choose to rinse off before hopping in a pool but since all our pools are either chlorinated or salt water pools, it's not really necessary.
All the pools have chlorine yes - but you need to take a shower before and after ... and naked alongside everyone so that might make somebody uncomfortable
@reynir Regardless of chlorination it's always recommended or required to shower before entering a PUBLIC pool.. who wants to be in a public plool with dirty bodies releasing excess dirt into the water. It's Best to shower.

Interesting.. I used to know someone who went to "C" - this was a little over a decade ago though- but - she could not stand it there... men spit and pee in the streets/out in the open, etc...
There are a lot of people that stack stones up in the highlands in Iceland for their pictures, stop their cars suddenly in the middle of the road, many who don't know how to drive stick rent a car and think they can just learn on the road (of course I mostly blame the rental companies for that, it wouldn't take them long to find out if the person can drive up a hill or not) and it's a terrifying thought that many tourists simply don't know how to drive in Iceland. I could go on but this just makes it seem all bad, we really rely on the tourist industry (although that also raises all prices for icelanders too) and personally I really love talking to people from around the world that love Iceland and its culture and language.

The low % in beer in super market is also a loophole to advertisement beer because advertisement on alcahol is illegal in Iceland and a drink with 2,5% and lower are not count as beer by the law
