- June 2021 marks 5 years of me living and traveling Iceland! Immersing in Icelandic culture has changed me quite a bit and I'm sharing 5 ways that I have changed the most since moving in 2016. I feel that these changes will forever impact my life and I will never be the same. congratulations on five years! i just got my own residency/work permit, allowing me to stay at least two more years, and hopefully longer, a couple of weeks ago -- yay! so celebrating along with you.

I finally watched Ari Eldjárn's comedy special because of your recommendation. Absolutely hilarious! Honestly one of the top three stand-up routines I have ever seen. His voice acting and his impressions (including of like inanimate objects?!) were incredible.
I got my sweaters from Iceland thanks to you advertising the website on your channel. The sweaters are of great quality and beautiful.

I grew up on licorice, it was my Grandad's favourite sweet so Icelandic tastes are not so strange, at least in that regard.
I enjoyed the interviews you did, it was so interesting to hear peoples stories, especially because i might not ever have heard them otherwise.
Yea, I think that is how Icelanders feel about licorice too.

We were brought up on black sweetish licorice.
I luv the Dutch salty licorice as well.
I know exactly what it's like to immigrate to a new country culture and language.
Very challenging in the beginning to put it mildly but so worth it and life changing for the positive.
Definitely makes us stronger more interesting and broadens our horizons.

I know what you mean about teaching yourself another language. I started teaching myself German last year, and it has ups and downs. Sometimes I want to practice my German but it seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day.
Yea, it can be hard to find balance and to see progress. I hope you keep going with it and give yourself breaks when you need to.
I will. I don’t give up that easily. I usually have music playing at home anyway when I’m doing stuff around the house and it turns out I really enjoy German music.

I like black licorice as a gum. It's the only type that has no aftertaste like mint does.
There's a Savant who learned to speak fluent Icelandic in a week, enough to go on live television and do an interview. Amazing!
I just went to Iceland recently, I was there with a friend for 6 days over memorial day weekend and I can't wait to go back. I want to go in the fall for longer. I can see how you definitely can get a lot out of multiple visits to the same place, the natural wonders are just mind boggling.
As for your number 5, part of my reason for going is to get alternate perspectives (I enjoyed that comedy special too btw). Other than the sights, a major highlight of the trip was talking to some of the locals.
A perspective check for me was as we drove a lot we were listening to the radio and it was in Icelandic of course but they mentioned memorial day because it's a bank holiday. My thought process was like wait, that's an American holiday... but it's a bank holiday everywhere... because the financial system flows through America because we're a superpower... Do we even deserve this power? Are we responsible enough for this? LOL (these are rhetorical, just my passing thoughts at the time) but yeah it's just so funny because we in the US hear the term superpower and it seems sort of distant in a way and then to come overseas you kind of see it from another angle, so it was a bit of a tippy moment. I believe it's good for us though, I like that sort of mind-expanding feeling.

Yea, it's strange how much influence countries like the US has all over the world. Just want to make sure I understand one thing. Are you saying that Icelanders on the radio were saying Memorial Day is a bank holiday in Iceland too?
I wouldn't be surprised if they were mentioning the holiday because of the ceremonies that take place on that day. Plus US soldiers were stationed in Iceland during WWII.
@@AllThingsIceland I heard the words "memorial day" and "bank holiday" so I assumed the bank holiday included Iceland and that's why they were talking about it, yes. BUT since there was Icelandic around these phrases it's entirely possible I'm missing some context 😆
Genuinely curious now about the extent to which Icelanders celebrate the holiday. I remember hearing about the soldiers staying there.
@@sirenarussell9250 I am just trying to imagine why they would use those phrases at all. Because it doesn't affect the markets here all that much since we also trade with Europe quite a lot. I just had to google when Memorial Day is.

I didn't find that it was super cold per se... what knocks u off your socks sometimes is the wind. Sometimes u have to fight it just to close the car door

Since you asked, yes, I do enjoy all of the interviews, and yes, they are very long. And yes, I can't sit that long, so I watch in spurts. Maybe break up the interviews? Or I can continue to watch in spurts, but then I have to remember to search to catch the rest.
Thanks for letting me know and the feedback. I've been trying to figure out what is the best way to feature them. For now, I might just keep posting the long versions and work on how to split them up.
Off topic but a lady you interviewed for your blog a while back is in Katla, a Netflix series. Like as soon as I saw her I knew she was mixed race. And she is very pretty. But I have followed your channel off and on so it was cool to see that you had interviewed Aldís Amah Hamilton. You should check out the series and do a review/reaction (unless you already have). Since I think the setting is in South Iceland. There is also one of the many Skarsgard babies in it (their family has at least 6 kids). I also noticed that Alex Skarsgard is going bald. So different from when he was on True Blood (he is still handsome though).

Wonderfully honest. Thank you. Watching your videos I felt so happy that a "utopia" possibly existed. Now that the rose colored glasses have been knocked off, I at least feel hopeful that the potential for change if not perfection, is possible. I don't feel hopeful for positive change here in the US.
370,679 people (according to local website) is like roughly half of Alaska. Iceland only reached 100,000 population in the 1920s, 200,000 in the 1960s and 300,000 in 2006. Small? Yes. But guess the more it is, the faster it grows. Greenland and the Faraoe Islands combined is just 110,000, less than half of the capital region of Iceland
1. This was really cool -- I think somewhere in #5 is "I will never stay inside when the weather is nice ever again, no matter where I end up living in the future." :-)

Yes, I’ve been to Kulusuk and Tasiilaq. It was amazing and felt like stepping back in time. I want to visit Nuuk because I’ve heard it’s more metropolitan but I Lear Ed a lot about the culture going to those places. Also, I went hiking in the wilderness there with a guide. She had to carry a gun because of the possibility of a polar bear showing up.

I didnt understand why people were glacier climbing in the South Coast... A. The glaciers are melting so why break them apart more? B. What is the attraction? Go to a parking lot in winter & climb up the snow piled there.

I was thinking that. Years ago (after WWII) the USA set up an air base there. Tmk the Icelandic govt requested to only send up light skinned soldiers.. but those were the times back then

In one of your Podcasts you said to someone that Icelandic is hard and because of that it is so easy to go this is too hard and I can’t do it or this rule is annoying. But then you said that you just sometimes gotta learn it and get passed the hard part/ complaining. And that has stayed with me. Whenever I am like why do I need to understand the difference between Kringluna eða Kringlunni or anythibg else that I wanna qui on. I am just learn it and you will be fine. Get passed the too hard and I can’t

Did you decide to keep your US citizenship, even though you will still have to pay taxes there?
Yes, I kept my US citizenship. I have to file taxes but I don’t have to pay double taxes as long as I am working for a company in Iceland and paying taxes here
