I bought the Max with the 1 TB chip. What impressed me the most was the I/0. You get 200 Gb of data interface. 160 from the Thunderbolt, 10 from the Ethernet, 10 from the USB A on the back and 20 from the USB C on the front. That is a-lot of future proof. I don't understand the full implications of the M1 Max yet, but I can see that the architecture is a paradigm shift. I'm replacing a late 2014 Mac Mini. I already have the the Mac mouse and number pad keyboard. I have a really nice Dell 4K multi input HDR10 monitor. The Mac Mini controls my three Windows Computers via Ethernet. I see an OWC Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure w/ Thunderbolt3 Ports in my future. I already have 4 1TB drives to put in it, but over time I plan to put four 4TB drives in it .

It sounds like you put a lot of thought into your purchase and I hope it serves you well. I’m actually considering replacing my 2020 iMac 27” with a studio display connected to my M1 MacBook Air.

He bought it because he has a channel, and buying these products gives him something to do a video about, and since he gets paid to do this from Ads and so he really has to buy one of these, or nobody would be watching him. This is true of all these tech talk/review channels. That’s really it.
@Mel Gross Mel, I have to say your are right but I would split this about 50% on the channel and the other 50% on "got to have it" lets be real. Remember when Apple used to sell the OS from the Apple store the lines would reach 2 city blocks before the store open a day before that's the obsession I would be right on line with them talking about everything Apple its part of the community they just have to have it.
@@Vipwhips13 I've been in IT for over 40 years the reason I'm still in IT is because the next best thing the tech changes all the time and in some cases weekly . No such thing as future proof is that was true we would all be driving Model T Fords.
@@MrDonXX sure, but don’t forget that his (and other RUclipsrs businesses in the.Apple community) depend on buying the new products. If they don’t, how can they talk about it, and slap their faces at how they spent all that money again. Realistically, we don’t need dozens of guys, most of whom don’t know any more about this than we do (and all too often, less) reviewing equipment. But they chose to make money this way, and it’s just an investment in the business. Except for a few real photo/video pros, most just do videos for their channel, and “home movies”. But this gives them a way to pay for stuff they otherwise wouldn’t buy at all.
quick question; Basic M1 chip not as fast as M1 Max? does single core score come into concern with these M1 chips? How does it effect latency for midi processing?
My big issue with the studio display is the lack of HDR capabilities .. especially for the price. LG has a new 21:9 Ultrawide HDR monitor with Thunderbolt 4 and 5K resolution which seems like it could be a great Ultrawide option for the Mac Studio: LG UltraWide 40WP95C-W 39.7" 21:9 Curved FreeSync 5K2K HDR IPS Monitor
My wife bought an IBM PS/2 when she was writing her graduate thesis in 1986. The salesman told her, “trust me: you will *never* need more than 128k of RAM!” I just ordered the Mac Studio Max Ultra and yeah, it’s way more than I need *now*, but seeing as how it’s replacing my 2008 Mac Pro - which was way more than I needed *then*, I feel pretty confident it will meet my needs for whatever new things come down the pike in the next 10+ years. Now that this capability exists, devs will write applications for it.
This was quite a different video of you Greg, so refreshing! I really like this style, please continue doing these kinds of personal opinion videos in the future.
It is very difficult to evaluate yourself. But you do make quality content, which is truly valuable. Hopefully, the world can go back to normal soon. Greetings from Ukraine.
I don't do intensive work on a computer. I received the M1 iMac for Christmas, which is way more than I will ever need. Where I see Apple excelling is getting people to load up their machines with more power/storage than they will need for the foreseeable future. Then having such good marketing, those same loyal people will not be able to resist upgrading within a couple of years to the current kick-ass new product, negating the purpose of the costly upgrades of the prior choice.
The same with a new car. After 2 weeks it is just another car which brings you from A to B. You always have to ask yourself, do I really need it, does it make me a better content creator, or do I just suffer under GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)?
As a video editor do you only use a single monitor? I prefer dual 27’s and would consider three…. I settle for dual 27 dell 4K ultra sharp… w studio 128 are you going to run a single 5k display?
I bought a maxed out iMac Pro in 2017 for around $13K. I've now owned it for just over 4 years. The performance gain/difference of this Mac Studio is amazingly faster and large enough difference that I just had to buy it. Since I already own the new 14" M1 Max MacBook Pro, the only way I could truly justify buying the Mac Studio was to buy it maxed out with the M1 Ultra. I couldn't buy an equivalent desktop chip to my MacBook. It just wouldn't make sense. I was really hoping for a Mini LED 27" Display and for some crazy reason, I thought Apple would release a much cheaper Mini LED than what the current XDR cost, since my maxed out M1 Max MacBook Pro cost under $5K with a 14" Mini LED and includes the computer, storage, etc... it just kinda made sense that maybe Apple would release a 27" Mini LED for around $2K or $2.5K. That didn't happen, but I guess the up side is that we're not having to pay $5K for the new tech display to go with the Mac Studio. I hope the color calibration on this new monitor is close to damn good for post production grading! My delivery date is May 11 - 25. What's yours?
May i ask why you have such a high usage of RAM? I use 16gm of ram on my m1 pro macbook pro, and I use Premiere pro, After effect, and illustration at the same time. But my 16 ram macbook is still fine with current work flow.
As someone who produces music independently, but certainly not in any major Hollywood high-stakes setting, I cannot tell you how excited I am to one day own this computer. It sounds like exactly what I've been needing!
Something I haven’t seen any reviewer cover but would be curious to know, is how your iMac being used as a display for the new Ultra Mac compares with the new Mac display, this can be done via airplay and supports any cable or wireless connection. The reason this interests me is the base iMac is a similar price to macs new display. As the new display is limited to 60 Hertz refresh rate I can’t imagine there being a huge difference regarding latency. PS. When you getting the new Mac Pro lol
I simply can't imagine working only with a MacBook screen. I need that bigger form-factor being a 27 inch external screen. I also waited 7 years with upgrading to a new Mac, previously using 27inch iMac 2012. But finally in October 2021 Apple showed a new MacBook with stuff I needed - ports, speed and performance, gorgeous screen and insane battery life for a 16 inch laptop. Studio Display would be a great addition to my current setup. Thanks for the review of this Mac, I found it really helpful. Take care!
Hi Greg my name is Zan. I just bought the new MacBook Pro 16 inch display liquid retina XDR, M1 Max chip, 64 GB of unified memory and the one terabyte solid-state drive. My question is how long will I have before the computer goes obsolete since the new Apple station was announced
Hi Greg What about Max Tech saying they saw no notable performance difference between 32 and 64gb. Think 128gb might be overkill even with Ultra? Thanks
I'm not 100% sure but I'm 70% sure that if you delete your "High Quality Media" render files from your Final Cut package contents, you will see massive gains in your SSD storage. Not sure if you're aware of this.
What codec are you shooting that you're feeling faster speeds on the newer Mac SSDs? Bitrates even on the newer camera codecs, especially h.265, should not be bottlenecked by your external SSDs
Apple is more interested in putting more money in their pockets rather than passing value onto their consumers. If they were they would have released an iMac 27” M1 which compares to the 24”- but note that they did NOT- this says it ALL about Apple and how much they care about the consumer!
Holding off spending more $ until I see an M1 or M2 27" iMac. Had my 2015 version until this year and did so much work on it. So sleek, unified, clutter free and a mentally freeing machine for everything from video editing to watching these videos!! Good job Greg!
These information videos are important to a lot of people it helps us determine what we should get and why we should get it, the technology is getting so complicated that it can be very confusing to a lot of people who are not sure of what to buy, when it comes to computers we just use them to do our work whether it be video, photo or music we're not really on top of things when it comes to technology and we can't know everything nobody can, it's hard enough just trying to figure out our own programs whether it be video or photo or music 3-D modeling or complex rendering.
I order the Mac Studio with M1 max, 512GB storage, and 64GB RAM. I went low storage because I have a few external drives. When the M1 Mac mini came out, I did the same. Maxed the RAM and went with 512GB storage. All apps go onto the internal storage with files on external drives. Plus I love the HUBs that fit perfectly on top of or under the mini that can fit 2 SSD drives in them. Then with the Studio being the exact same footprint as the M1 mini, I'll be able to just move that HUB onto the Studio and it'll look great. I also don't do any video editing though, so I get why you'd need more internal storage. I'm upgrading to the studio because the M1 mini just lacked the power I needed. Always ran into low RAM issues & even had the mini crash multiple times by just being on for a while (days).
I hope....before you receive and jump into the new Mac Studio, you could give us your honest opinion of your experience both good and bad while using the M1 iMac 24" for a whole year. PS - I received mine middle of July 2021. And I love mine but I'm not a power user. Basic video editing and some music editing using Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.
Nice video! I would like to know how the new M1 Maxx and Ultra performance with Blender? Could you create some test for that when your mac studio finally arrives?
I'm planning to order Mac Studio (I'll wait your impressions before taking decision what configuration I need) upgrading from Windows machine not familiar with IOS (the only IOS I am using is my I-phone). I will Thanks for any Guide / Book to help me hump to IOS !!thnAKS
Hi Greg I just bought A MacBook Pro 16 inch M1 Max, 64 GB of unified memory And one terabyte of solid-state drive storage my question is since the new station from Apple is out how long will it be until my computer is obsolete?
I have a 2013 base MacBook Pro still being used daily if that gives you any indication how long they last if you’re not worried about not having latest greatest thing
You know, my late 2015 27-inch iMac has the ghosting effect that you mentioned with the LG 5K (not sure if other 5k iMac owners are having similar ghosting problem?). Other than that, I am very happy with my iMac. The fan does get a bit loud when the real-time stock quote starts streaming during market opening hours. The ghosting is quite annoying. But replacing the screen panel doesn't seem rationale as I hope to get a quieter Apple Silicon big screen iMac, when it is available. Now, if the 27-inch iMac is killed, my next Mac will probably be a MacBook Pro with an external display.
You know what, I have a late 2015 iMac 27'' and I've recently started to get the Ghosting on my desktop screen. It's not effected any of my design work but It's started to creep in more and more, Icons on the desktop especially. I've just upgraded the RAM to it's max 32GB with 4 x 8GB cards instead of buying the same generation iMac Pro 27'' but it's not really improved things much. It still gets the colour wheel of death now and then. I'm thinking of getting a iMac Pro, but unsure weather its a good idea or not with all the new stuff coming out.
I have a late 2014 bought in 2015 and just before the 3 yr Apple Care expires I had a several ghosting issues too. Got the display replaced and this was fixed. However, the colours on the borders were never good, kind see as yellower. it is not a deal breaker to me but I understand a video and photo professional would be highly impacted by that. Last year, I upgraded the internal SSD to expand useful life time for a few more years and disregarding the issue with border colours it still works very well to me. Saving money apart for a Studio Display and Mac in a few years when the iMac turns 10!
I have the 2015 27” as well, no ghosting so far. I don’t like how slow it is for video rendering even with just iMovie, but it’s great for everything else I do with it.
I think getting 8TB or even 4TB on a desktop is better spent on a NAS. You need to backup 8TB and if you're not backing up to redundant storage there is a lot of risk. With a good NAS and 10Gbps network you can edit directly off the storage and access it with a macbook when needed as well.
I honestly can’t afford this nor able to use its full potential if ever I got one but I am happy and contented seeing content creator like Greg having a blast and justifying why these powerful devices existed. Also, appreciated the unscripted videos like this, makes me feel he’s just talking to a friend.
just a reminder... There are 6 Thunderbolt ports ONLY if you get the M1 Ultra chip version. There are 4 Thunderbolt ports on the back and 2 USB-C on the front if you get the M1 Max version. This is related to the number of Thunderbolt ports available on an M1Max die. (4)
Pretty much agree with everything you said: except for storage😮! Have you not heard of the Cloud🤔? I've gone for the Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine 64GB unified memory 1TB SSD storage The only thing I'm regretting ATM is that I delayed ordering a couple of hours, which cost me a couple of weeks delivery time🙄
The design of the Studio display shows what the future iMac will look like. There is plenty of room for the larger processor and SSD storage. The dark areas shown during the release presentation indicate the real estate to be used in the future larger iMac.
I agree with your points on this looking like a good computer on paper. But what does not look good on my wallet, buy a $2400 computer buy a separate $1600, trackpads, keyboards, taxes etc, etc, etc. I have been a 27" imac user since 2013 and this is NOT the computer I was hoping for...😔 Anyone out there think there is still hope for a new 27 inch imac???
I ordered the 2013 Mac Pro (3.5Ghz 6-core, 32GB, 512GB, D500) on 12/19/2013 for $4323+tax. Used it every day for over 8 years. Mac Studio (M1 Ultra 20-core, 64GB, 1TB, 48-core GPU) for $3599. To be delivered 3/18.
I suspect they are going to come out with the pro, and then be 100% transitioned. However, with the A13 in the display, it can easily be transitioned into a Mac in the future. I suspect in 2023, or 2024, they will reintroduce the 27" iMac within this display.
They said it was the Mac Pro that was the last one in the keynote, BUT, don’t take that statement as there will be no bigger iMac with Apple silicon. Think of them as categories of Macs, so they have done every category of Mac including the iMac bar the Pro, that doesn’t mean there won’t be different models in a category released.
thanks for sharing bro. I would love to buy Mac studio to hook up with my Dell Ultra sharp or LG 32'' 4k display but the experience is never as good as a solid Apple machine so i decided to go for a last intel 27 inch imac which i can upgrade the Ram later on.
One thing I won't miss is reaching to back of iMac to plug stuff in, Sheesh they had so much lower frontal realestate why not have ports in front. Now just turn Studio Mac and plug in back or front or back of display
I purchased two "Dell UltraSharp 38 Curved USB-C Hub Monitors - U3821DW's" and love them! I got them from MicroCenter for $800 each; they now have a list price of $1569! I use one at work (with a pC) and one with my Clavinova piano with an M1 Mac Mini.
The only 5k options in the 27inch form is the LG Ultrafine 27inch, which also had a built in webcam. There was also the Dell 27 inch 5k which has since been discontinued. The only other option that's close is the 34WK95U from LG, and ultrawide at 5120x2160. Dell does make a 32 inch 8k monitor which would be similar in color performance to the apple monitor.
Ah therapy… I enjoy your candour Greg. Of course you had to get the ultra - for the channel. You know you don’t need it, as you say you don’t need the Macs studio at all, just the monitor to get back to that 5k editing experience we all love. But that would be boring right? You channel is one of my favourites so of course I want to see you review the ultra! Me, I’m going from a 2015 iMac 5k to the base Mac Studio. I think the performance jump for me will be amazing.
There has to be a way to use the 27inch iMac screen as a monitor for one of these M1 Minis or Mac Studio there has to be a work around🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 it’s just to much money as a average user to try and come up with🤔
I have been using a 17" laptop since 2013 as my current machine. The battery died and the left hinge is falling apart but the computer still works! I like the new technology coming out and one day I'll have to buy a new computer. I have been a Windows Pro user for a long time but Apple impresses me with the new M1 chips. This latest product, the Mac Studio, impresses me greatly because it has the IO the other devices don't have like the USB Type A ports that I still use and the full size card reader that I use all the time. It has 10GB Ethernet which I may need one day as speeds continue to increase and it has the new ports that I may be using one day as well. The M1 Max base model has 32 GBs of RAM that I don't need today but I may use in the future. I use 16 GB of RAM now and 500 GB SSD. Moving up to at least a 4K monitor would be nice since I have 1080 now. I also like the 24" iMac because I could get it from Apple for a good price and it has almost everything I want and since I'm retired, it has plenty of power to do what I need, mostly the Internet and I do use Visual Studio 2019 for my website but Apple has a version for their computers. It really comes down to what my budget will be when my current computer dies! I do like hearing your reasons for buying what you did. I think everyone should buy what they need and nothing more, that is just wasting money!
I agree that this a great prosumer Mac. I had the Mac G4 Cube back in the day and Loved It. I think it was the best Mac design ever and then they flipped to Intel and made it obsolete. I’ve been struggling with the M1 Mac Mini with 16Gbs in music production. The Mini doesn’t quite make it for running Logic Pro. I would get memory errors at around 90+ tracks. The best thing about my M1Mini was it runs soooo cool. Apple silicon is such a Great Leap Forward. Even the base model of Mac Studio should fix all the issues I have now. Like “dongle hell” and memory issues. Thanks Greg for your insights.
16:53 I am totally stealing this phrase and will use it on my daughter and girlfriend every time I get a new gadget : “it’s for you, not for me. Its for you…”
I think it’s a good desktop set up from Apple I and it should last list 5 to 10 years I’m definitely gonna get it because right now I’ve got nothing to start my hair business with absolutely nothing and I had a 27 inch display I don’t know what do you guys think?
Good to see you went for the gusto with a high-spec Mac Studio! Did you trade in your MacBook Pro Max or your iMac 24"? I have the 2020 iMac 27" (high spec) and a MacBook Pro Max, so I'm not being as bold as you. I talked myself out of ordering the Studio (Max) since there is literally no spec gain for me unless I go with the (too expensive) Ultra.
On the monitors thing… I’m torn between the new mac 5k which I know will be great but I hate the price, or a BenQ 3220U which a lot of reviewers have praised as the best option for designers and video editors. Any thoughts on that folks?

Why not using iMAC as a 27” Monitor ?
quick question; Basic M1 chip not as fast as M1 Max? does single core score come into concern with these M1 chips? How does it effect latency for midi processing?
Is there a way to hack an imac and turn off its computer unit to use just the monitor?
Would you happen to know if that monitor has the option to be attached to a monitor arm?
My big issue with the studio display is the lack of HDR capabilities .. especially for the price. LG has a new 21:9 Ultrawide HDR monitor with Thunderbolt 4 and 5K resolution which seems like it could be a great Ultrawide option for the Mac Studio:
LG UltraWide 40WP95C-W 39.7" 21:9 Curved FreeSync 5K2K HDR IPS Monitor
I love the lamp on the right.where did you get them?
My wife bought an IBM PS/2 when she was writing her graduate thesis in 1986. The salesman told her, “trust me: you will *never* need more than 128k of RAM!”
I just ordered the Mac Studio Max Ultra and yeah, it’s way more than I need *now*, but seeing as how it’s replacing my 2008 Mac Pro - which was way more than I needed *then*, I feel pretty confident it will meet my needs for whatever new things come down the pike in the next 10+ years. Now that this capability exists, devs will write applications for it.
This was quite a different video of you Greg, so refreshing! I really like this style, please continue doing these kinds of personal opinion videos in the future.
Thank you 🙏 Appreciate it!
you really mean it?
Is there a possibility to connect a Imac 2019 to the Mac Studio?
Can I use my intel 5K Retina Screen iMac as a monitor for the Mac Studio if I was to buy one?
It is very difficult to evaluate yourself. But you do make quality content, which is truly valuable. Hopefully, the world can go back to normal soon. Greetings from Ukraine.
Is that sd card slot in the front? Shame is not CFexpres
Can you tear down your machine in order to know if the SSD Texas Controllers are there? Also that you have a second SSD?
Would the mac studio be good for 3D modeling, 3D animation?
do i spec up a single processor ..or go for the ultra twin processor ..spend 1 k more ..and get half the hard drive ...1TB ..instead of 2TB
Fan noise on my 2019 MacBook Pro is ridiculously loud. My biggest complaint. Full spec performance also not great.
As a video editor do you only use a single monitor? I prefer dual 27’s and would consider three…. I settle for dual 27 dell 4K ultra sharp… w studio 128 are you going to run a single 5k display?
Would you really use a 27inch screen for your workflow, far too small for me.
Why not just get the
Apple M1 Ultra with 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine, if you already maxed out the configuration?
Can I use my mid-2011 iMac as a display with the Mac Studio? (Until I can afford the new Studio Display)
Apple Studio Display vs 27" imac 5k display ?
As someone who produces music independently, but certainly not in any major Hollywood high-stakes setting, I cannot tell you how excited I am to one day own this computer. It sounds like exactly what I've been needing!
🦷
Will the Mac Studio M1 Max chips be clocked higher with the improved thermal design vs MBP?
Bro, you bought a desktop (not a laptop), get some external storage for projects that you are not working on.
Big overspend on storage.
Hi Greg
What about Max Tech saying they saw no notable performance difference between 32 and 64gb. Think 128gb might be overkill even with Ultra? Thanks
could you have used air play with the iMac if possible?if you could of what would have been the reason not to
I'm not 100% sure but I'm 70% sure that if you delete your "High Quality Media" render files from your Final Cut package contents, you will see massive gains in your SSD storage.
Old 16" imac design was so refinned, sexy. The new m1 imacs are to bulky.
Can you watch iTunes 4k movies on the Apple studio display? Or is this just possible with an Apple TV 4k
I have a used Mac Mini late 2012 that I got for $600 probably four years ago. Happy with it.
Will you keep all those M1's after getting the MS (MacStudio)?
Thank you for all your member support Greg
You’re the champ, Greg. Thanks for this. Your press conference basically mirrored my own thought process for deciding to buy Studio Max.
Thank you 🙏 Glad you found it helpful!
The M1 ultra is insanely powerful 2 M1 max chips one M1 max chip is lnsane
I hope....before you receive and jump into the new Mac Studio, you could give us your honest opinion of your experience both good and bad while using the M1 iMac 24" for a whole year. PS - I received mine middle of July 2021. And I love mine but I'm not a power user. Basic video editing and some music editing using Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.
Nice video! I would like to know how the new M1 Maxx and Ultra performance with Blender? Could you create some test for that when your mac studio finally arrives?
So much emphasis on the M chips, video and ports yet no real discussion on any improvement with audio playback... thoughts???
I am really looking forward to the Studio DIsplay review. I really want one, but will it be worth the extreme price?
@GregsGadgets How does it (Mac Studio) run on a LED 4K TV?
In FCPX: File->Consolidate media-> Check "Optimized Media" and "Proxy Media". Delete. Save a TON of storage!
I wish Apple’s new monitor was 32” instead of 27”. I don’t know if I can downscale.
you can use 2013 or 2014 iMac as monitor with 5k display and enjoy that
I think getting 8TB or even 4TB on a desktop is better spent on a NAS.
Hate the thumbnail, love the content
Ill take it. Thanks! Lol
just a reminder...
I've gone for the Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory
1TB SSD storage
The only thing I'm regretting ATM is that I delayed ordering a couple of hours, which cost me a couple of weeks delivery time🙄
I appreciate the longer video with a clear explanation of your decision. In this case, the information was worth the longer time.
Just noticed my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 (2x2.66Ghz, 2GB, GeForce 7300, 250GB & 500GB SATA) w/mouse and keyboard was $2559 8/17/2006.
I had the Late 2012 Mini (2.6Ghz quad-core i7, 4GB, 1TB Fusion drive) for $1080 ordered 11/16/12 in-between.
But the question is do you have it already?
I’m not sure the 27” iMac is coming last thing they said was we have one more computer to add to the line up. So it’s either a 27” or the new pro
How is it that the new medium apple desktop is the same price the Mac pro started before? By saying these the new Mac pro will start at 5000...
There has to be a way to use the 27inch iMac screen as a monitor for one of these M1 Minis or Mac Studio there has to be a work around🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 it’s just to much money as a average user to try and come up with🤔
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and enjoy your purchases. Blessings on your day.
I am waiting for a new imac 27 inch or possibly a 32-34inch imac......
