I got a really good deal on my wedding photog. I found a guy who needed one more wedding for his official accreditation in our county (Kent in UK) we negotiated a great deal! I paid a slightly (about 30% off) reduced rate and we invited him and his helper to eat at the reception, only one hour of work at the reception, and he got to use our photos for his application. He asked for some extra images with specific poses (like a bit more arty etc nothing nasty)
He threw in a really beautiful photo album for the photos we decided to have too. Brilliant. We also bought a bunch of films (I’m old and got married in the 1990’s) and handed these out for anyone who wanted them. Loads of lovely people sent us some really cute, natural, funny and beautiful images. Just normal 6x4 pics. It was awesome

As a paramedic, I'm not someone to hold my profession over others, but I have yet to see a mom, or a respiratory therapist wake up in the middle of the night and have to perform compressions/intubate/give meds to someone they didn't even know.

I know the hard work people in your profession do everyday for people. Last night a couple came to get my dad to take him to the hospital, along with a few firefighters to help get him on the stretcher. They did a wonder with my dad and was so patient even if when it was near midnight. I didn't know those two paramedics names, but I'm very thankful for the work they did. My dad is down in Texas now after transportation from another hospital, something in his brain ruptured, and he's going to be gone from home for awhile.
I would have generalized most hospital employees together. EMT's, Doctors, and Nurses definitely do a lot of the grunt work, but hospitals are massive gearworks of people that work hard and have to be in tandem with the other departments.
Even if we don't consider what you said, if a store wants to give free stuff to some people but not others no-one has the right to bitch about it. These people should be ashamed of themselves for being so petty.

I like the idea of showing up to take pictures, then taking the absolutely worst pictures possible. Like not using flash, cutting off people's heads, not centering shots, having the shots at an angle, putting your finger in front of the lens, taking pictures before they're posed & smiling, etc. Then when they complain say, "You get what you pay for. I'm not a professional, just a 'budding photographer' whose talents you wanted to exploit."

I was in the military when I got married and didn't have a photographer. By chance there was literally a professional photographer having a picnic with his family near where I got married and volunteered to take some pics for us for free. Awesome people.

My uncle is a non-professional photographer. By that I mean, He is a big photography nerd, he takes real nice shots and sometimes does some events shoots for a little compensation, but that's not his job.
He made wedding shots for my two brothers and my sister 's weddings, for free. It wasn't even asked as a service, we just asked if he'd be interested, and he always gladly gets in.
In each three weddings, there was him plus a hired professional photograph, the idea being the uncle takes basically "every moment and everyone as it goes", while the photographer did the big money shots on the key moments, and the audience was asked not take photos by themselves (to not have everyone's sight obstructed by an army of smartphones shooting) and we just shared the photos with every guest via Internet with possibility to order printings, and it worked really well.
We never paid him, and he never asked for anything in return. It's just how we do things here, we just give to our loved ones without expecting a payback and without any kind of IOU-log. It works well because we all give and receive all the time. Well, not exactly everyone, we have our share of weirdos and choosing beggars, but we keep the thing going because at the end of the day, we're happy to do it for loved ones and that's what keeps the family and friend deeply tied, even though we all live far from each other and don't get to meet often. That's why when my uncle had a bad case of divorce and needed a roof over his head, we all were there for him. And if my wedding day ever comes, I know he will be there with his smile, his camera and lots of stories to tell me.

Sadly, the entitlement of parents who feel they're owed the same or more than disabled people is not that rare. Every single time I've got onto public transport in my wheels, the wheelchair spot (of which there's at most one (or two per train, but one is a first-class seat)) is filled with luggage and at least one stroller/pushchair/buggy. In one case, even though the wheelchair spaces are protected BY LAW in the UK for ONLY disabled people to use, a wheelchair user got onto a bus and the EP refused to move the pushchair from the disabled space. The driver refused to make the EP move the pushchair and so the disabled person had to get off and wait for another bus. That's assuming the next bus stops, because let's not get into how many times bus drivers "don't see" wheelchair users waiting and they've legitimately had to hide behind bushes while an able-bodied friend or relative stops the bus before they jump out like some ninja, and even then, sometimes the drivers will refuse to press the single button that automatically lowers the ramp to allow them access, even when they're not full. And then there's that one train company decided that if their train ends up being more than a couple of minutes late, they are simply going to refuse to pick up disabled passengers - even those who have bought tickets ahead of time and pre-booked the space to ensure access - or will refuse to get the ramp out to let them off/randomly force them to disembark at their choice, regardless of where the person actually wants or needs to be.
Anyway - that wheelchair user took the bus company to court. The judge, in the UK court system, confirmed that the driver and company broke the laws against disability discrimination by not forcing the EP to move the pushchair out of the wheelchair space, but then proceeded to REFUSE to make a ruling forcing the company and drivers to follow the actual law. So basically, we now have case law in the UK that says it's just _fine_ to ignore the rules on disability discrimination and protected disabled spaces on public transport. And then, let's just briefly mention the Tory MP who thinks disabled people deserve to be paid less because "they don't know the value of money" and their work doesn't deserve the minimum wage that everyone else does. Or the fact that many people (including me) have been unable to get into numerous disabled toilets because they are along narrow corridors and aren't big enough to manoeuvre, or they're used as extra storage cupboards, and that facilities for those who need changing don't exist for older children or adults, so they have to lie on the floor, dehydrate and end up with recurrent UTIS or simply not go out. Or that disabled people have been forced to wet themselves on trains before now because the disabled toilets were out of order even before the journey started when they KNEW that they had a disabled passenger booked. Or that most of the London Underground is STILL not accessible, even when it says it is - because apparently 4-inch height differences between the train and platform are regarded as okay. Or that most powered wheelchairs and scooters are "too big" for public transport. Or that many taxi companies will refuse to carry disabled people or charge several times more than able-bodied customers, even when they don't have to do anything more than they would for putting luggage into the boot for anyone else. And then there's the number of stores that say they're accessible, but the paths between displays etc are way too narrow and there's no way for most people to get through if they need to use a chair or scooter...
Ableism and entitlement are everywhere, sadly. People think because we have disability discrimination laws, everything is magically fine, but at the end of the day, society still thinks that disabled people are greedy, malingering, a burden, second-class, and less deserving of support in order to live full lives - even though many of those disabled people are able to actually work full- or part-time, and many more could do so much more if they were given support... and instead, there are people who think that if we dare to go out and do something fun, then we're just "cheating the government" because heaven forbid that we're not utterly miserable all the time. People who legitimately think we shouldn't even be out in public. People who think embarrassment rooms and asylums should be where all disabled people should go, regardless of what it is... and the perpetual myth that fraud in those claiming disability in the UK is around 24%... when in reality it's orders of magnitude lower than that. Until we can fix that assumption that disabled people need to be pitied or are simply "inspiration porn" for able-bodied people, then things will never change.

I am so sorry to read that. Sadly, this reflects exactly my limited experience. Both me and my mom broke our ankles in the last years and had to use a wheelchair for a month. It cannot compare to what disabled people live through on a daily basis but we got a taste of it and it was not pretty. People pushing to pass in front of the chair, disabled toilets horribly dirty, taxi drivers cursing us and taking off, etc. Ever since I have been amazed at how brave disabled people are and sad about how we treat them as a society. ( we are not in UK but in the EU).

I have a friend couple who were getting married and they’ve complimented me a lot on my photography skills, I love them both so I offered to take their wedding photos for free, and they were like oh no honey we want you be a bridesmaid and enjoy the wedding, not working behind the scenes. This is how nice people treat a friend when they are getting married.

As a respiratory therapist student, I definitely believed RT are super Underappreciated!!! I just started my clinical 2 weeks ago and damn!!! They only have 4-6 RT running all the respiratory care, mechanical ventilation (Cov19), aerosol medications, etc. ALL of the RTs are overworked and they need more recognition for their work.

That tip about hiring a “free” photographer for your wedding got me triggered. Even for a budding photographer that’s a bum deal, while exposure is good and all it doesn’t pay off for really much in the end especially when you are starting out.
Edit: I’m a hobby photographer and due to COVID-19 a local show full of bands I was going to shoot just for kicks after putting my camera down for many months got cancelled, then I was laid off from my day job and I’ve been staying at home since. I also maintain (for deep personal reasons) I will NEVER shoot weddings/engagement photos.
The problem with getting "exposure" is that you'll only get exposure as a free photographer. "You did it for them for free, so you should do it for me for free, too"
The only way I see it as okay for free is if A. The person offers. B. The person is close family (Here requesting is okay- forcing isn’t) or C. The person owes you a favor of equal value physically (money, work, etc) or emotionally/time wise (duh) and doesn’t have to give something important up to do it. Idk tho plz don’t call me a dirtbag for saying that, Im an artist and have done some things similar but not photography is I don’t know about that. May be different. Also I’m so sorry about losing your job ): At least in a lot of countries you can get unemployment for a hefty sum of money, or government help. At least in my area. Idk tho again

Agreed. I once had one of those people who collect money for charity come to my door and act all offended and disgusted, that I only gave her my spare change (and even that was an inconvenience, cause everything is electronic now but I need coins to wash my clothes, which is usually very piled up). I'm the type of person who will get an overcooked steak full of tendons at a restaurant and say "Yeah, sure, food's fine :)", cause I don't want to be a bother or bring attention to myself, but THIS lady pushed me over the edge.
I told her that I'm an uneducated loser that needed family or social workers to help me with basic, everyday stuff for almost a decade until recently, and therefore didn't have a genuine, steady income, was at risk of losing my apartment and therefore would probably be getting the money she was collecting in a few months anyway. I was shaking by the end of it, so I just closed the door without letting her respond and sat on the floor for like 10 minutes, cause oh hell, my neighbours probably heard all that... xP.

As a photographer, If my family or friend asked nicely for me to do photos for a small wedding for free or a big one at a discount, I would. Just because they ask for something for free doesn't mean they don't value you. Now if they expect it and are rude, that is a different story.

I took a relationship class at one time and we were taught *not* to skimp on the photography. You'll eventually forget the taste of the food and so much, but those photos you'll always have to remember the day. That was ages ago. Trouble of being an Xennial, it was right as cell phones came out but they certainly couldn't make beautiful pictures.
