Just found that out. Guess he couldn’t get the rights or something. ☹️ This isn’t a genre of music I listen to a lot(Phantom, Les Mis, and a few others being the exception), but it’s one of his performances that really stuck out for me.
@@valiantwarrior4517 This was recorded when Idol did these "temporary" releases on iTunes that disappeared at the end of the season. So, none of the songs recorded by David Cook or others that season are available for purchase or streaming! Sorry! this is a gem for sure.
David had one week to learn this studio version, plus a live 90-second version for the show, plus a group number, plus a song for a commercial. He's not a trained singer and was 25-years-old when he recorded this. Keep that in mind before you complain he's not Ramin Karimloo.
Saw this musical with Michael Crawford 3 time and Robert Guillaume once at the matinee. I fell in love with David Cook's version the moment he opened his mouth on American Idol. It is, by far my favorite.
sierra_mcmurtry that's exactly how I heard this version. I was listening to it on pandora while sleeping. I refused to go back to sleep until i found it again tonight because I recently saw Phantom of the Opera and although I loved Gerald Butler's version I couldn't get David Cook's version out of my head. Hence my search. I'm so glad I finally found it.
Exactly.. I have literally felt like falling to the floor when I play this recording!! The people that criticize it are so stuck in their preconceived notions. I saw Michael Crawford in the role and he was a great actor but the voice was thin..!! It's a tiny voice. Hear him in Hello Dolly!! LOL It's a wisp of a light tenor voice! David's voice is very full and "round" in tone as well as with a dark timbre too owing to the fact that his is a bigger voice: spinto or even dramatic tenor which is evidenced by some other of his singing as well.
If a song or piece of music is done right, it has the power to bring tears to my eyes. One example is the violin crescendo in the original recording of Murray Gold's "This is Gallifrey, Our Childhood, Our Home" for the Doctor Who soundtrack. It's so darn beautiful. David's rendition of "Music of the Night" is another example. When he holds the note at the end of "Let your soul take you where you long to be," I well up. I well up a few seconds beforehand in anticipation because David sings this so beautifully and I am so in love with his voice. :') His performance may not be perfect, and I have yet to compare it to other versions of this song, but given that this is not his usual style and that he isn't classically trained for this style of singing, and given how little time he had to prepare, I think he sang this brilliantly. I break out in goosebumps and then melt every time I listen to this rendition. David has such a powerful rocker voice and I just love that he can also be soft and tender and sensuous with it. Just imagine what he could do if he did have classical operatic training and/or more than a day or two of preparation time with this song.
This is an absolutely beautiful version!! I like the grittiness of his voice, the gentle parts, and the awesome power behind those high notes. If he had had more than a day or 2 to work on this song, I'm sure it would have been even more amazing.... But I would never cast him in this part because something about his version sounds very youthful.... it lacks the maturity I associate with phantom. The Phantom has an almost childlike sense of wonder when singing this, but this isn't that.... idk it's almost as if I would prefer David Cook as a male!Christine rather than the Phantom. I bet David could sing an excellent version of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.
saw phantom live (the current ongoing world tour) a few weeks ago, and i recognized this song as one i heard often in my childhood, usually as a lullaby to get me to go to sleep. i always remembered it being david cook's version. hearing it again, it's as beautiful as i recall.
Wow,I just listened to the Billie Jean, Little Sparrow and now this studio version of MOTN...you would almost swear it's a different artist singing all 3 songs!! This man is so supremely talented vocally it's insane!!!
Some of the comments are just inane. I am a retired vocal coach. David is so vastly superior vocally to Crawford or Gerald. David is either a dramatic or spinto tenor w a dark, velvety sound and incredible resonance and spinning, free vibrato beyond any of these others !!! They may be more highly trained, and actors first but if you cannot distinguish that David's voice is infinitely better intrinsically than Gerald's or Michael Crawford's little light legierro tenor then I'm sorry but you know not of what you speak. Those two are better at acting having had much more experience, and Cook had to learn this and turn around and record it in a day or two!!! But those world class high notes are literally spinning on their axis !!! And he phrases naturally beautifully. This makes me weep it is so beautiful! It's not just an empty pretty voice - it is brilliant. He is one of the best tenors in the world and it's a shame he doesn't fit any genre, exactly. He's just too damn good! Amazing.
My dad was a spinto with a glorious voice, and singing was one of the 3 jobs he always had to support his family. It gave me lifelong appreciation of voices and the first time I heard Mr Cook I knew immediately that I was hearing something extraordinary. What Mr cook has is incredibly rare. I don't know if he himself realizes just what he has. Fortunately we have quite a lot of youtubes of him as it doesn't seem like the commercial music world values what we do. Great to see praise for this talent coming from a professional.
wayne Gray no his voice is lighter at the bottom. Baritones "come into" sound on the low end. He has a very unusual dark tenor voice. I spouted this for years then finally spoke to him about it at a show he did here in Bham and he confirmed that he is a tenor for certain. The vocal coaches at AI felt the same way as me.
then if hes a tenor then whats my voice type cause am a baritone if its ok can you check out one of my video so you can give me a input on what my voicetpe
wayne Gray Sure Wayne I'll be glad to. I'm about to go to sleep but can you leave your info? If not I'll give you a way to contact me . Private messages are impossible now !! I used to do them all the time but on Apple devices I can't even find them anymore.!! Trust me he's a tenor and it can be tricky to tell for singers but I can spot which is which.
All and all it comes down to the fact he sang it beautifully, vocalists as it is sung so differently. More modern. And for that I give him him applause. It's a beautiful version!
i think if the phantom had sounded like this in any of the stage shows or the movie i would have been PISSED at christine for going off with Raul. can't lie. i just melted and fell in love.

Beautiful singer. I love David Cook and I love how he sang this song. My favorite American Idol. From the very beginning I knew he was going to win. That's why I have such a special connection with him. :)
Really? I thought it was the best version of this song yet! It really almost brought me to tears the first time I heard it....It's just so beautiful....
the croakyness is actually part of the whole think, thats how everyone sings it it makes the sound have character :] those are actually my favorite parts
It's just incredible that this is one of those over-the-weekend rushed Idol recordings from the bad old days when they had them up on iTunes for just a short time after the week's show. What a terrific performance, Mr. Rocker ;)
I love Phantom of the Opera, and I can't listen to it if it's not sung at least moderately well... He blows me away. This is my favorite Phantom of the Opera song, and he nails it. He won Idol for me the night he sang this.
One of my favorite parts of this song is those last 5 beautiful notes played at the end. I didn't hear them here but still, David Cook is an amazing singer and I voted for him every time the season he was on American Idol. Great job, David!
I honestly hated David Cook on American Idol until he did this. I'd love, love, love to hear him continue to do things like this :D I love "Music of the Night", he did so well with it, too! Never knew he could make this sound soooo good.
I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. :) I've said before that I'd like to make sweet love to Adam Lambert's voice after listening to his rendition of "Mad World."
David Cook is also not classically trained to sing operatically. For someone who's more of a pop singer, this is honestly very good. You can hear the respect he has for the piece in the way he sings.
I really belive that if he did an album of love songs/standards/broadway with a modernday Percy Faith with tons of lush strings it would be a huge success. There is a huge market, me included, for this kind of music.A Grammy is waiting.
He was on Broadway most of last summer and early fall as Charlie Price in Kinky Boots. He was amazing both his acting and singing. Forgot it was David Cook up there on that stage, he was that good. Google David Cook Soul of a Man, . He did a couple of acoustic performances, but there a couple of him singing live on stage. His voice filled up that whole theatre! Sooo good
i cannot tell you how disappointed i am that this isn't on Spotify
me too!
Same! 😭
Just found that out. Guess he couldn’t get the rights or something. ☹️ This isn’t a genre of music I listen to a lot(Phantom, Les Mis, and a few others being the exception), but it’s one of his performances that really stuck out for me.

this includes Always Be My Baby which is STILL played all over the far east but for which Cook gets nothing.
David had one week to learn this studio version, plus a live 90-second version for the show, plus a group number, plus a song for a commercial. He's not a trained singer and was 25-years-old when he recorded this. Keep that in mind before you complain he's not Ramin Karimloo.

Absolutely love how he sings it!! Heard it on pandora and couldn't get it out of my head then to find the same version again!!! OMG love!!
Same, I had to find it on RUclips to listen to it

Same
*slowly melts into the floor*
I feel sorry for the replay button on this video :)
Grace R Quite agreed ;)

I know his mother...
I love phantom of the opera but always come back to this version of the song
Me too! When I saw this on Idol in 2008 I was like, ok this is IT!!
This never gets old.
now this is the real Phantom singing!
No one can touch this version. NO ONE.
Holy shit I want him as the next Phantom
Beautifully sung David....

"Beeeeeee" is staggering. World class. His voice IS world class in every way. One of the best underrated tenors in the world sadly .
Not bad for a rocker!! ❤❤❤
He is the most beautiful man with the most beautiful voice that ever existed.
Dang, that’s beautiful, David!! Time to go on Broadway again, this time as the Phantom!
One of the most sensual songs i've heard. 🥰
That's the point according to Webber. He said that it was meant to be sung like you're trying to seduce someone.
My heart just melts when I hear this. It's so beautiful. His voice is lovely. If someone serenated this to me, I think that I would faint. Haha. ^-^

Well at the time he was quite youthful ! ;)
It’s the edgey teenage phantom!
I already loved this song but hearing David Cook sing it gives me chills.

i thought hes a lyric baritone

David Cook is the best..He can sing anything..No doubt he won....

Best version ever!
rock voice + phantom of the opera = true beauty and respect for the song. Beautiful rendition indeed

'Music of the Night' sounds like the perfect lullaby.
This is absolutely breath taking! I love his version of the song so much!
[LYRICS]
Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon my defenses
Softly, gently, night unfits its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darkest side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night, of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night
Literally crying. He is perfection please marry me
This is the best Phantom voice ever
PLEASE PUT THIS ON SPOTIFY
He had about one day to learn and then perform it live. Studio maybe a few days? Great Job.
That Voice!!!..on my bedtime playlist.. that note at the end seems to go on forever. (sigh)

Beautiful singer. I love David Cook and I love how he sang this song. My favorite American Idol. From the very beginning I knew he was going to win. That's why I have such a special connection with him. :)

Totally agree!

really amazing!!!!!!!
touching too.
was a surprise hearing something so sensitive from cook
David Cook did a really good version of this song. He's the reason why I even listen to it, and play it on the piano! lol :D
One of my favorite parts of this song is those last 5 beautiful notes played at the end. I didn't hear them here but still, David Cook is an amazing singer and I voted for him every time the season he was on American Idol. Great job, David!

My favorite version.
That is such a beautiful song, and David Cook does it so well. I am going to see the play today; I wish he was in it.
is it possible to fall in love with a voice alone?
I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. :) I've said before that I'd like to make sweet love to Adam Lambert's voice after listening to his rendition of "Mad World."
+Brianna Huber if you were gay...
