    we've had our freezer off grid for 15 years now,,we have it on a timer at night from 10.pm runs for 2 hrs off for 3hrs to 8.00ish am,, when we have a power outage i do the same for the home fridge,but i set it up so when the freezer is on the fridge is not,, and in the summer we make ice cream off solar, my honey gets a giggle out of that,, great vid keep up the great work :)

    I have been running three chest freezers off of solar for close to two years without a single glitch. Chest freezers will pull down the temperature to about 10 below zero, and what I found is that meat and food frozen at that low temperature maintains it great taste despite being frozen for longer than one year. Food frozen in a regular refrigerator freezer just doesn't last that long.
    The key to chest freezer efficiency is that they don't have a defroster that goes on from time to time like refrigerators do.
    My freezers are so efficient that by 11:30 am, my battery pack is fully charged and I end up wasting solar power for the rest of the day. So, I'm working on a solid state relay that will switch the solar panel output, once the batteries are full, to a grid tie inverter that will feed the excess power to my home use. That way I don't need separate systems.

      Love hearing that JR! Solar rocks pure and simple. At 9000 ft. back in the day took ridiculously little energy to run a 8 cu. ft. freezer. For months on end it barely cycled on! Mahalo for all you do where you are. 🤙

      There's a guide here on YT where someone coverts a chest freezer to a refrigerator by just changing out the thermostat controller. These things are super efficient due to the fact that opening them doesn't cause all the cold air to pour out.
      Essentially, all those fancy new, expensive, portable compressor based camping refrigerators are just tiny upright freezers that have thermostats that don't go as low. The lack of defrost is also key to keep the energy consumption low as you've said. A popular mfr. of "Off-grid Solar" 12/24V refrigerators - "Unique Appliances" have this in common, and those use around 500-600Whr/day and those things are like $2000-$3000.

    • @JR-kk6ce
      @JR-kk6ce Год назад

      @@davereichert yes, my GE side by side consumes at least double the energy of the three chest freezers combined. I have a 12 volt refrigeration/freezer on my sailboat that consumes very little power and has been running 24/7 for over 10 years. It uses a small air cooled condenser and despite the high temperatures in the boat when it is locked up, it still works great. I think I'm going to try converting a chest freezer to a refrigerator like you commented on.

    Realy awsume setup! And good idea. Something will definitely happen not a question of if just when! I have my pannels permanently set up i wish i would of put more of a angel on them . I saw a 1200 watt solar tracker i think the kit was $1600.00 it rotates and follows the sun with roll and pitch id love to set 1 up but the wife would have a heart attack lol

      Something bound to happen yeah. Trying to be as prepared as possible. When I lived in Colorado mountains, I had a manual solar array tracker. It was heavy duty, and I just turned, and tilted accordingly for whatever time of year it was. Worked perfectly, and helped tremendously. Auto tracker wasn't that great where I was because of super strong winds which blew the auto tracker off course. aloha 🤙

    You can add foam panels to the outside of the freezer for added insulation, just cut and glue.

    • @JR-kk6ce
      @JR-kk6ce Год назад +2

      You have to be careful about adding insulation to the outside of a chest freezer because most of them have the condenser coil underneath the metal exterior shell of the chest freezer. If you place insulation panels over that area, you will decrease efficiency because it will be difficult for the coil to dissipate heat.

    Aloha. I really appreciate your channel. I've been on similar path for more than five years.
    Thought I'd share with you what I believe to be a charge controller worthy of this type reliability at a budget friendly price. I think Rich Solar will impress you. The included monitoring software is on par. I'm running the 40amp MPPT which is essentially the same as the 30amp MPPT. Not sure about the 60 amp model. I haven't used the Bluetooth because the data cable is included and works perfectly.

    That freezer great. Must have for the storms. In Boston NY we have wind and winter storms that take the grid down. Same trouble with supply's running out in store shelves .Even gasoline runes out. or cant sell it no power. last wind storm in fall grid down 1000's with out power and me and girlfriend in hot tub having fun. and we hear Nabors generator running . mine stayed off. wind is my friend hear. Win gen 24V makes quite a bit on windy day. extra power to spare. now my dump load is hot water tank solar. I found that freezers for the first 24 hour plugged it use the most power . now next storm you can have a great cook out/may be indoor . and relax let things get better before heading out. what me and my girl do hear. 😀

      Keep dialing in what's needed for whatever comes our way. Always hoping it's not needed, but the air these day's is crackling with possibilities. I sleep better knowing I've tried to be ready for some disruption. I don't like going out much to begin with, let alone when it's a little crazy. Best case scenario, I throw a big bbq party when the freezer contents need to be rotated after a bit of time. Aloha buddy...may fair winds keep you juiced up🤙

    I have the vissani 7.0 chest freezer that I converted into a refrigerator using an external thermostat. It's pulling a surge of 689 watts at startup for a few milliseconds and
    around 75watts running. At around 1.4 amps of AC current. I have a 200ah 12 volt battery running a 1000watt cotek inverter. When the fridge is running the inverter is pulling 9.5 amps of dc current from the battery in order to produce 1.5 amps of AC current . This was surprising to me 9.5 amps of DC to produce 1.5 amps of AC..not very efficient

    I could not envision using any device on solar without a transfer switch. Amazon has a 63amp 2 pole 125 volt switch that automatically senses ac status on “normal side” and switches to the reserve “shore” power if you loose the solar side. It’s a motorized breaker that will not island or “mix” BOOM ac powers… check it out….

    Currently running 2 d\chest deep freezers and my refrigerator off solar. Just have six 100-watt panels in parallel. Also have two 100-amp hour lipo4 batteries being charged by a 2000-watt inverter. I do not run 24 hours a day but only from about 9 am to 6 pm each day. Sem Don't think I would have enough battery power or solar power to run all the time.

Currently have a system just charging batteries to move around and show various applications. A new 48v system that is running the refrigerator and freezer at the same time, and still my large 12v system running everything else in the house. Some solar panels, a charge controller, inverter, and battery will do it. How much solar would depend on your conditions. For example , right now I have 700 watts solar tied up to that freezer. I need extra because I get lots of dark days this time of year. I am keeping up just fine with the extra panels now. Started with 300, then kept adding until I was perfectly sized.
