  • Whats up gang? Got a new chest freezer from NewAir to keep in our garage to help lessen the load of our overflowing refrigerator with TWO kids....and I think it's going to do great.
    I really wanted to demonstrate how well this cooler worked, along with how long it would run solely off a battery in the event of power outages, so your food won't spoil. As you can see, I got around 48 hours off of a 200ah LIFEPO4 battery. Pretty impressive.
    If you're interested in this chest freezer, NewAir was kind enough to send me a 10% discount for you that you can find below:

    Wow. Very impressive numbers on that test. You will actually get more time than that once you fill it. The frozen foods will fill the volume and the compressor won’t have to cool as much space

      Exactly! This was a more difficult test for the battery than a real world situation I think.

      My thoughts EXACTLY! As soon as I started watching the test, I said to myself ‘well, you’d get twice the time out of it if you had it full of frozen food when the power goes out’

    That's consistent with what I have calculated for my same-size freezer and smaller upright refrigerator. Both together consume an average of about 90 watts per hour (based on monitoring with my kil-a-watt meter), so a 200 Ah battery would power the combo for slightly more than 24 hours, taking into account inverter efficiency losses. For longer outages, I would need to supplement it with a small ~2000 watt generator to charge the batteries while also running the fridge and freezer, given that a fast battery charger would take 5 hours to fully charge the batteries. So far I'm in the planning stages, and your videos have been very helpful. Again, I'm surprised by how noisy that inverter is. I'm investigating a Redodo 1000 watt inverter for my purpose, but I'm still working out the components.

      I’m curious to see if the solar panels can charge the battery with the freezer running or at least hold the battery percentage steady.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  Год назад +1

      It should. Max wattage I saw the freezer pull was 68 watts. I can average about 75 watts off my solar panel (and it’s a small one) so I should be feeding the battery even when the compressor is running. But solar is finicky.

  • @clarencewiles963
    @clarencewiles963 Год назад +1

    Thanks. Could you redo this with a 200 watt solar panel put in the middle of the driveway? What I would like to find out the minimum Solar to have a perpetual system. Thanks for your posting.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  Год назад

      Thanks Clarence. I did do a video using a 200 watt panel you can find on my channel. I got about 5 days I believe. Really need a 400 watt array to keep it perpetually running.

  • @Merlinsluck
    @Merlinsluck Год назад +1

    Another great video. If you had the solar panel hooked up, would it keep the battery sufficiently charged if you ran the same test? Or would the battery eventually run out?

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  Год назад

      Thanks! I’ll be posting another video with this scenario exactly. But, the freezer pulls about 65-70 watts and my solar panel can bring in over 100 watts. So in theory should be able to run a long time….if the weather is good.

  • @williamsuttle3645
    @williamsuttle3645 Год назад +1

    Since your draw is only 68watts at peak, and if you aren't going to run anything else on it, you could drop your inverter size- use less power. Also, I wonder how long you can run it with replenishing the battery? So if you had a scenario of post hurricane/tornado (nader) where your power could be off for days, sun can be plentiful but also can be hit and miss, how long can your fish stay frozen with replenishing the battery with solar? I'd recommend 600 watts of solar, but let's do 200 watts to make it interesting.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  Год назад +1

      Yup. I’m building another unit now and will post that soon. But, 2000 watt inverter (yes, overkill for this scenario), freezer actually have food in it that’s frozen, a 200ah battery and a 200 watt solar panel.

  • @Juancarlo4342

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  11 месяцев назад

      I didn’t try it with the 120 watt panel. That would honestly probably take 5-7 days of perfect weather and no load on the battery

    Inverter is way overkill for the freezer and wasting tremendous amount of energy. Much smaller invertor would have done the job, also do the test when it is loaded not empty.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors

      👍🏻 was the only inverter I had at the time, and I wanted the freezer to be empty just to give a type of “worse case scenario”. But, good points.
