I was a KFC manager back in 80’s, when stores were just switching to pre made jars of the dressing. So let me drop the two secrets the Colonel put into the slaw… Miracle Whip & Tarragon vinegar. Others have noted the lack of fresh chopped onions, not powder, in your recipe. We would mix it in the morning and package it the following day. Hope this adds to everyone’s coleslaw.

Your version is very similar to mine. I also use the store-bought pack of cabbage/carrot mixture. Instead of Apple Cider Vinegar, I use a splash of Zesty Italian Dressing. I also add sugar, salt, and pepper. Plus I add my secret (until now) ingredient: garlic powder. Everyone who has eaten my slaw has raved about it, saying it was the best coleslaw they've ever eaten. I never measure the garlic powder. I just sprinkle some across the top then stir it in. Then repeat 3 times. I'm definitely going to try your version, so that in case I like it and don't have all the ingredients to make my version, I can make yours. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

O.K. I made this yesterday, and I would say it is darned close! I do taste a bit of celery seed in KFC coleslaw, and I dissected some KFC coleslaw (not that I'm a fanatic or anything) and found that there is Diced Onion in it. So, I added 1/2 diced onion and 1/4 tsp. of celery seed, and WOW! So close, that you could not jam a playin' card between the recipes! Keep up the good work and I'll keep eating it.

Made this a couple of times and it's the closest I've ever had to KFC slaw. The only thing I changed was I halfed the apple cider vinegar (1.5 tablespoons). I bought the store-bought cabbage and hand-chopped it to a finer texture (like KFC). I thought it was perfect. Had company over for dinner and their eyes popped when they got their first taste. :) They insisted on the recipe.

My friend, I worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken for 5 years in the sixties. We had to make all the slaw ourselves. We made it in white plastic garbage cans. Here's the very simple recipe: shredded cabbage and a few shredded carrots for color. (we used a large metal electric shredder) Then, pour MARZETTI'S slaw dressing over the shredded cabbage and carrots.
Now you must let it set overnight in a cooler before you serve it, so all the dressing is absorbed by the cabbage and carrots. That's it! Cabbage, carrots, Marzetti's slaw dressing. That's it! (and to me, it's the very best tasting slaw I've eaten in my life.) REAL SIMPLE! 🙂

I use to help manage one of KFC's restaurants, ours was a smaller one but always very busy with customers lining up out the doors and around the building. One of the reasons was because for just a few cents more our customers could get shrimp in their coleslaw. We use to use the tiny little ready to use salad type shrimp but due to the particular flavors used in their coleslaw dressing it was an amazing combination.

I had a neighbor who had three KFC's and, of course, she would never give the recipe to the cole slaw but she did say it had something you would never think of. I think that ingredient was horseradish sauce. Something which southeners did use but something us northerners did not. Most other ingredients the same as most cole slaw: chopped cabbage, onions, carrots. terragon vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, oil. When sauce is mixed add in some horseradish sauce tsp to tbsp to taste. I think the little bite of that horseradish does the KFC trick. Even if not, this is a good additive anyway.

Having a fish fry Saturday. Perfect side. Simple. Wish I would have thought about buying his fry mix.

Try Serve if you're diabetic. It's a substitute sweetener that tastes just like sugar with no bitter aftertaste. I tried Stevia and Truvia but no matter what people say, I found they had that unpleasant aftertaste. Swerve is the first sub. sweetener I've ever tried that I actually like.

I made it with chopped onions and the taste is very good. Another time I used chinese cabbage, which I personal prefer.

It all depends on if you want it to taste flat or tangy. I use my mother's recipe. She never measured the amount of miracle whip or white vinegar, but it always tasted the same. How much of the "goop" she made depended on the size of the cabbage she started with.

Sorta like any conventional pickling process. That is, soak some vegetable (softened by parboiling) in a vinegary sauce for a couple days. You almost can't go wrong.
