I love the sound of an I5, but can't understand why no one uses them. They offer so many advantages over underpowered and rough 4 cylinders while being simple, smoother, and economical to manufacture while avoiding the serious problems of packaging, high production costs and complexity of a V6. They make so much sense that I don't understand why more manufacturers haven't gone to them.
And if we're broke, it even sounds like a V10 so we can still flex!
They aren't smoother. Also it's always cheaper to make 4 cyl, even with better pistons etc.
@@GMLioko I mean you are right but they are smoother at a very specific rpm range so it’s really just a trade off between being sort of smooth all of the time or being super smooth some of the time while not being smooth at all the others.
Because at the end of the day it’s a niche middle ground without the efficiency of a 4 cylinder and less power than a 6 cylinder
Because its more complicated a.k.a. expensive to make it work compared to 4 or 6 cylinders.
I’m so happy to own a 5 cylinder Volvo, beats most cars in a race and still gets excellent gas mileage

Inline 5 are amazing because they produce the best sound for a simple inline. it's a simple engine that sounds astonishing and it usually has a small displacement so the taxes and consumption are normal. It's a jewel of an engine and it's sad that many of the makers choose to go the simple 4 cylinder route instead of 5 (wich sounds 90% as good as a v10).

I know it was just a concept but the Polestar C30 was also an insanely fast and uber badass 5 cylinder. It really blows that something like that wasn't built but Volvo wants their brand image to be about safety with a huge emphasis on luxury now.

Yeah I know Volvo makes some killer inline 5's. The c30 had the same inline 5 as the focus RS and Volvo s60/v70R's I believe
+ReticentIndignation All Volvo 5 cylinders are built on the same principle, so you can relatively easily achieve the power of the Polestar C30 in an 850, V70, S60, S80 or any other 5 cylinder model with a remap, 18t turbo and some other tidbits.
The general term for the 5-cylinder Volvo engines is "Volvo Modular Engine", which comes from the fact that you can combine parts from pretty much any version and it'll go together.
Plus, Cyan/Polestar racing offers Polestar tuning packages, so you can buy a C30, upgrade the hardware then leave it with Polestar and they'll tune it up for you, Polestar badge included and everything, so if you want you can recreate that Polestar C30 ;) There's also a factory Volvo color called "Rebel blue" which is awfully close to the Polestar blue seen on the C30.
Baron Riasaka I know what you're saying but it's not true as far as Polestar stuff to upgrade one's C30. Using Polestar stuff you will not come close to recreating the Polestar C30, aside from the AWD they had. Although I do know quite a few guys on C30Crew who have come close with badass C30s upgraded with K16 turbos pushing over 300 whp in the US at 27 psi with Shark Tune, CEIKA BBKs, Bilstein coilovers, and lots of other upgrades through aftermarket. Dude's in other countries that are able to tune easier are/were pushing 400-500 whp.
Besides, as far as the C30 is concerned it's not just about the horsepower, imho. The car feels like a little go kart, love that about it.
My car right now is 2014 S60 T5. I've owned four different 5 cylinder Volvos. I just really wished that Polestar would've built a C30 but it wasn't to be as nobody would buy it.

Baron Riasaka Ah true, I thought you mean by using Polestar you can get close to having a Polestar C30. That wouldn't even be close, but yes some guys I know on the forum have pretty wicked C30s. Other can drive really well.
The RS3 sportback is so unbelievably badass. It should be obligatory for every car maker that offers a hatchback to offer a model with that engine in it.

The Colorado/Canyon 3.5L L52 with a manual trans and a Flowmaster Super 40 is an amazing sound. It has a primal growl and some really, really awesome crackling on a downshift. Going on 10 years of loving that sound.

The Volvo 5-cylinder engine is basically a Porsche engine. In the late 80's Volvo gave Porsche Developement Weissach an order to develop a new 24v inline-six, which had to be modular, so it could also be turned into a 5-cylinder. Porsche did the entire design and testing. They were going through difficult times finacially, so they did lots of work for other manufacturers, like with the Audi RS2 and the Mercedes E500

Porsche even engineered the Mercedes I5 Diesel OM617 and this one was released early 70's, years before he draw the I5 for Audi (VAG). Audi's I5 was then Back in the 80's used in the VAG Volkswagen Passat 32B Model only as N/A engines with 115-136HP, depends on year and layout, frontwheeldriven and as syncro 4WD only in the Variant (Stationwagon) availiable.

I had several inline five curs but Fiat Coupe with gt3071 and custom exhaust was a real beast. So many years have passed but I still miss it
What happened to it ?
I had a Bravo with the NA engine. It was such a blast to drive it and everyone was looking at this car making this awesome sound lol. Blew a head gasket unfortunately. The coolant pipes were probs still stock on a 24 yo car and one of them just leaked all the coolant and the head gasket gave out by the time we noticed. Well, maybe I'll buy another one down the road, or a Coupe, the sound is just too good I already miss it!
here in Brazil we have the Fiat Marea, very famous for its sound, 1998-2007

Thanks for giving the 3500/3700 atlas some love. I fell in love with the motor, even have a centrifugal blower running 7psi for mine, puts out a little over 300whp and torque. It's a weird but interesting sound, very unique especially since mine has a long tube and full 3" exhaust.

2.4 jtd is really the great one, i had a 159 2.4 tuned to 240Hp and it pulls
4 later but i have 156 2.4jtd its amazing

I got to drive a T5 yesterday(same engine as the 850r and the sound is very unique and really goes around 3-3.5k. Love the sound :)
I got a Jetta mk5 2010, 2.5 5 cyl, and i love drive 80 Miles/day, the sound, and the perfomance are unique

Because now you have to read it, then memorize it (while you're still watching the video), then continue reading the sentence after the new box comes. I end up not reading them at all.
I have a manual 2007 VW Jetta with the 2.5 inline 5, and it sounds amazing. Not only that, it gets pretty good gas mileage, and it has plenty of power for a small car. And yes I know it’s a Volkswagen, but it’s an older base Jetta, so it doesn’t have much technology to it.
the older cars will survive longer then the new ones, because they are way more mechanically engineered, my 1995 Volvo 850 only has little rust after 300k km's, and still pulls hard, the stock muffler can last up to 800k km's. And it sounds awesome.
I like the growl of the GM 5-cylinder, and when you really hit the gas it almost *almost* sounds kinda like an LFA but smaller

Great vid. In top trim, the Quattro's were capable of punching out around 800hp. Looks like the one in the vid is getting pretty close to that. I had a 5 cylinder Volvo twin turbo diesel 5. Totally stock in a XC60 but made good power and torque and was the best sounding diesel around. Had no idea Honda did a 5, it never came to Australia. Bet that was a sweet engine, Honda don't make bad engines.

The FIAT Inline 5 2.0L Engine, also known as "Fivetech" - Btw, here theese engines equips a model called Marea, what even it is a "Highly Explosive" car (The owners doesn't take a good care of these models, so that it wont give some serious problems such as engine overheating, too much smoke, etc.)

My VR5 is 17 years old now ... the engine is really all about the sound (for me). The early ones just use up their timing chains sooo quickly - changed mine after 50k miles :(

+joshua bunch I think this channel is pretty new. He's gotten quite a few subscribers over a short period of time if I recall correctly. But yes, there weren't enough channels on RUclips like this, so it's great to finally have one

Volvo had their diesel engines from audi
@@gyorgytimar3471 only the early ones. The vw supplied were known with vag engine code AEL and had a displacement of 2.5liters. Volvo however manufactured their own D5 engine from mid 2002 model year. All Volvo D5's were 2.4 liters of displacement.

+sparky83 .....In the late 80s Volvo used a VAG 2.4L I-6. I believe VW used it in commercial vehicles in Europe. I worked on a few back in the day. Good motor.
+bhaggen Only block and other parts were manufactured by Audi, it's is not the same motor. It is very similar, but not the same.

That's a strange sound to hear coming out of a pickup truck, for sure. Also note the wildly overambitious tachometer, which is something GM did frequently.
Im so glad to own a 5 cylinder volvo honestly. Its got quick acceleration and can beat alot of cars along with being a comfy daily driver and gets decent mileage!

peter drake by the water vapor coming from the exhaustion when a car engine is warm the vapour wil be reduced or even barely visible....unless it's extremely cold

You can tell that it's got some v10 sound. Heck, I even thought that the Audi Quattro used a V10 at first.
