@@LucasSouza023 It's because flat 4s and v4s have 2 cylinder banks, not unlike a v8. This also means they have 2 exhaust manifolds and exits. Earlier imprezas before 2007 and all WRXs(even current) also have unequal length headers which merge to the central exhaust pipe and that creates distinctly separate exhaust pulses. This is why most inline 4s sound more like a single vibratory sound, because each cylinders exhaust stroke is coming out of one manifold and it's hard to make the distinction between each exhaust pulse since the intervals are so close together.
I’m a custom car designer and I’ve been watching this channel for a while. You know your stuff. I hope one day you have so many subs that you can buy all of your dream cars. Best of luck with your channel.
Forgot about one of the greatest 4 cylinders, the BMW N14 Prince Engine. 173HP turbocharged inline 4 found in 2007-2010 Mini Cooper S and 2008-present Peugeot 308. Overall, good choices for engines but I would include this one as well since it has a cast block, making it great for tuning up to 400WHP
Yeah many have no clue about mini coopers and are just shit talking of what they heard from others who are complaining about it with wrong maintenance. N14 is my favorite 4 cylinder and it is one of the best sounding 4 cylinders besides the subaru wrx sti 💪🏼
I'll be honest. The earliest versions of those engines, specifically the ones in the Mini Coopers weren't great. They may sound good and put out good power but working on them is a pain and the problems they have are many. Later and earlier Minis had better engines that were more stout and reliable
The 1970s Toyota 12R engine must definitely deserve a spot in this video !!! One of the, if not the most silent engine I heard in my experience with old cars.
I have a suggestion that I think should be included on this list or a future list of great sounding 4 cylinder engines, especially N/A engines- is the early Quad 4 engines from Cheverolet/ Oldsmobile. The HO or the W41 versions- they sound great! I had a HO Quad 4 in my 1990 Beretta GTZ- it sounded GREAT! Great rumble & really put down great power & performance. -Just a suggestion-
I like the little bit of info in the beginning and then the fact you showed exterior and interior video of the cars to give a good, all around idea. Great job.
The KA24DE sounds better to me, but it's more heavy thanks to an iron block. The best thing is it's Torque, acceleration and include a tuning kit (Turbo, Intake, Headers, etc)
Usually I don't like 4 cylinder engines, especially diesels. No power, annoying sound etc. But this video changed my mind. There are some really good sounding 4 cylinder cars (except for Subaru)!
I miss my 88 MR2 with the 4A-GE that car was awesome loved revving it up to 7800rpm. Also miss my 2000 Celica GTS with the 2ZZGE and revving to 8300 RPM. I also had a B16 Honda Del Sol that was also a fun car to drive. Now I have a 2003 RSX Type S I rev to 8600 RPM since it's chipped with Kpro that car is fun to drive even more fun than my 2017 STI.
Pretty sweet man. I daily drive an '02 RSX-S, lightly modded with i/h/e (I hope to get a reflash soon). I just love hitting VTEC in it everyday! My dad also used to have a Milano Red B16 Del Sol VTEC too, its still in the family but not in as good of condition as when my dad had it :( . Sounds like you've had a pretty sick collection of cars too, I'd love to have a clean Celica GTS and a first gen 4A-GE MR2.
@@J3Fox00 Yeah I'm pretty old at 47 so was able to get a cool collection of cars in my lifetime so far. I also owned a 84 300zx turbo and a 87 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R which were also fun as well just not high rev cars like ones I mentioned earlier. As for your Type S you will be absolutely surprised the performance difference from no flash to flash on ECU. I tested stock 0-60 times with Torque pro app on my android tablet and bested at 6.8 seconds after the KPro chip and just a intake tune from them because I don't have exhaust or headers wanted to keep car low profile so wouldn't get stolen for parts and my times went down to 5.6 seconds. Car had 154k miles on it too after the flash has 180k on it now and still as quick as when I first flashed it. I'm thinking you will get even better times since you have headers and exhaust.
Funny thing, my RSX hit 184k miles not too long ago, it was my dad's weekend warrior and daily before he passed it onto me, he now has a silver 39k mile '05 S2000. I also plan to start working on and polishing the exterior too. I want to get all the small dings, dents, and road rash out of it first, then I'll get a Greddy Front Lip Kit, lower about half an inch then add some '06 Type S wheels, JDM Integra headlights, and maybe the Type R wing, all of which to go with the Hondata tune. It'll surely be a mean machine once its done!
@@J3Fox00 Yeah only thing I added to mine was the 06 Type S wheels but I think they are from a Honda Accord cause they have Honda Center Caps on them although they look just like the rims that came on the 06 Type S. I got them with Firestone tires on them off Craigslist for $325 even had the TPMS sensors although I can't use them. I would've liked to get the Type R wing but hard to find them for sale.
@@HoratioFitzbastard Funny story behind it. The concept was based on the 2.0 but the guys at PVO (what they were called before SRT) felt it would not hold the boost reliably enough so they went with the 2.4 that Dodge was using in a transit van overseas. A 4cyl built for punishment with construction and delivery services. Slap on turbo and an exhaust with no mufflers and you have a 230hp to the wheels.
Some more recent N/A Ford engines are just as good as the old ones. Like the nowadays 2 liter engine, direct injection, on the latest US sold Focus, 165 hp, not bad.

I would maybe modify the 3sgte description. That motor is anything but ordinary. The head was designed by Yamaha, and when later Toyota added VVTi to the later generations of the non-US 3sge (NA version), the engine was rated at over 200hp as placed in the Toyota Altezza
real Tylun Porter the problem with that is that boxers are not as inherently efficient as inline engines. Subaru has done very well with them, as has Porsche, but Subaru also can hide the inefficiencies behind an AWD system and Porsche can do so behind the fact that it's a sports car (so gas mileage is less important). So while there are benefits to the flat design, there are many reasons why the boxer engine is not used by the mass market. The companies that do use it have always used it, and at least one company I can think of off-hand that did use it no longer does (VW, unless you want to get technical with Porsche). It's a specialty card. It's like BMW and inline 6 engines. Mazda and Rotaries. Porsche and RR layout. There are reasons that most of the industry has moved away from those things, and reasons why those items are specialties of those specific companies. Also, I hate to hurt your feelings if this does, but weight distribution aside, small displacement boxers are usually far from powerful. Porsche has done a great job but also uses 6 cylinders to make the power they do. Subaru has to use turbos, or add cylinders as well. As a means of comparison, the NA 2.5L in my dads 2015 Legacy only makes 170-some hp. The 1.8L in a gen7 Celica gts (NLA as of 2005 in the US) makes 180 HP (2zz). Boxers tend to be more torquey than ultimately powerful, while inlines actually make more power at the cost of lacking the same torque. But this is where small 6 cylinders come in, as they make more power and torque more easily, are smoother, and usually retain acceptable fuel economy. But then look at the Dodge Dart. The GT model has an NA 2.4L 4 cylinder making over 180hp and 171 torque. That's only 3 less torque than the FB25 in the Legacy, with less displacement.
Why'd you show a Lancia Delta Integrale yet give the details for the Delta S4? The Delta HF/Intergrale had either 1.6L turbo or 2.0L turbo engines and were only ever run in Group A Rally. The Group B car was the Lancia Delta S4 and it was a completely different car from the HF/Integrale, mid engined rather than front engined and it had the 1.8L 4 cyl twin-charged engine. Edit: Also slightly sad that the Alfa Romeo Boxer engine didn't show up here in either Alfasud, Sprint or 33 form (I'm a bit biased though since I have a 1.5L Sprint :D )
My 99 C230 Kompressor sounds amazing and loves to be revved up. Plus, I've got an aftermarket pulley on the supercharger that makes it sound like a power drill is attached to the engine.
@@kyranoboyle3378 deffo not, the original video is in RUclips, and it Says that it has straight 6. And you can just hear it, bimmers 4 and 6 cylinders sounds so different, and this one is clearly not a 4cylinder

I think MINI has some very solid 4 cyl's. With the right exhaust it'll really speak out. My dad's stock roadster S is a talkative little thing. And my base R56 stock sounds decent in sport too. Don't get me started on the JCW GP3 or the 1st gen Mini S.
I dislike the Peugeot 206, because my brother's girlfriend had one, and the transmission oil leaked, the rear axle snapped and continuous problems. It had been used by many people before, so problems could occur then. But, I like the car because, it looks cool, raspy, quick and it's fun.

Maybe the wheels came from the JDM Integra Type S, or which generation of accord would say they came from?
Forgot SRT4
Toyota Tacoma's 2.7L 3RZ-FE i4 has amazing sound. Didn't sound zippy at all, sounded huge.
Next is Best sounding 3-cylinder Engines!
Whould be Bikes like Triumph and MV Agusta.
+FPS_SAVANT fiesta
+FPS_SAVANT BMW i7

Volkswagen up :D
Nothing can beat the sound of the 2.0L Twin Spark Alfa Romeo engine :D
Dodge Neon SRT4. Look it up. One of the main reasons I bought one in the day for how it sounded.
Seriously underrated engine.
That Lancia at the end is a beast. What a great sounding engine. Also that Cosworth wow.
I'm a fan of Ford's 2.0 Zetec-E engine note. 2000-2004 Focus models came equipped with it in higher trims. 130 HP at 5300, 135 Lb-Ft torque at 4500.
Some more recent N/A Ford engines are just as good as the old ones. Like the nowadays 2 liter engine, direct injection, on the latest US sold Focus, 165 hp, not bad.
The last alfa has to be one of my favorite cars ever made.

I would maybe modify the 3sgte description. That motor is anything but ordinary. The head was designed by Yamaha, and when later Toyota added VVTi to the later generations of the non-US 3sge (NA version), the engine was rated at over 200hp as placed in the Toyota Altezza
VisioRacer Where is Renault 5 Turbo? i think it should be on this list.
+Visioracer Have you ever heard a Toyota Camry, running from 80 kmph to circa 140 kmph? Four Cylinder Music ...
VisioRacer ur videos r epic check out my channel pls
real Tylun Porter the problem with that is that boxers are not as inherently efficient as inline engines.
4G63 the best 4cyl engins
Tiger shark in the darts sounds really good and distinct
I haven't watched the video yet and I will surprise myself but if the 1.8T isn't on here lets just say there better be a part 2

I think the 2zz sounds amazing
0:26 when takumi forgot to change his tachometer
😂😂
Then he turns over at 13,000rpm and breaks the engine.
I have a 5a and it sounds great
Volvo redblock and porsche 944 3.0 inline 4 sound so much better than thats..
sr20 and 3s are my favorite
Alexander Klein Yes the Twin charged group B Lancia is waaaaaay above these. Sounds so awesome
Dat Lancia had a really nice tone to it.
You didn't include the Mercedes 190 Evo 2. The best or at least one of them
I like the XU10 J4RS used in the Peugeot 306 Maxi, because it revs up to 11000 rpm. I just love high revving engines.
Where's the Peugeot XU9J4? Best sounding 4 cylinder ever made in my opinion (along with the BDA)
My 99 C230 Kompressor sounds amazing and loves to be revved up. Plus, I've got an aftermarket pulley on the supercharger that makes it sound like a power drill is attached to the engine.
The first grey bmw was a six cylinder, sounds nothing like a 4
godzillaisnuclea123 yeah it was like a 2.7 6 cyl
2.3L I4 lolll
@@kyranoboyle3378 deffo not, the original video is in RUclips, and it Says that it has straight 6. And you can just hear it, bimmers 4 and 6 cylinders sounds so different, and this one is clearly not a 4cylinder
@@longhairjon2919 It may be a 325i
Aprilia rsv4 should be on the list, all the motorcycle guys will relate
I'm surprised this list isn't 100% Hondas. Because, let's face it, they all sound amazing.
With fart cans?

Great sounds! Unfortunately you missed the Escort BDA, but still thumbs up and thanks for sharing
You forgot the 1.5 litre TS engine thats powering the Toyota Yaris TS.
My grandma has this car and it sounds gorgeous for a 1.5l engine.
I am a jdm boy for life but damn ford made some gems
fiat x1/9 best
Our 2000 Pontiac Grand am 2.4l inline 4 sounds pretty cool!
Best sounding 4-cyl and there is not even one Alfa Bialbero!!! Alfa invented DOHC like most of these cars are, Alfa must be mentioned
If you check the cylinder head on the 3SGE head, you'll notice the "Yamaha" logo. They also designed the 4AGE head. Now you know why they sound awesome!
Volvos B234FT Engine is Missing ;)
That engine doesn't exist. Either B230FT or B234F - and neither sound that good without a proper exhaust
Lancia Delta Integrale was a 2.0 Turbo. The Lancia Delta S4 was a supercharged and turbocharged 1.8L capable of over 750+BHP
I thought this video was about the best SOUNDING 4 cylinder engines. Clearly someone has a taste for japanese and some Ford engines. COME ON where are the ALFA ROMEO 4 cylinders including the sweet sounding BOXER?
i have a 20v black top 4age in my 96 bz touring wagon its a real solid engine
Ford germany V4 engine. Best sounding 4 cylinder engine ever built.
Ford M Garage V4 engines don't exist XD only V6, V8, V12, etc it's V engine cuz it has 2 banks of cylinder in a V shape
Wil Ramos bro you even get a v2 so why won't there be a v4
Clorox Bleach cuz V refers to the V shape in an engine. 4 cylinders engines all cylinders are in a straight line not V shape
Wil Ramos Are you serious lmao?? The ford v4 has two cylinder banks with 2 cylinders each!
@@JC-zg4xe ooops... I didn't know 😂😂 my bad
all 14 engines screams besides the 4g63 with just pops and bangs

I think he has paddles shifting a sequential gearbox
I think MINI has some very solid 4 cyl's. With the right exhaust it'll really speak out. My dad's stock roadster S is a talkative little thing. And my base R56 stock sounds decent in sport too.
Don't get me started on the JCW GP3 or the 1st gen Mini S.
My roommates F56 JCW sounds great 👍
No C20XE or C20LET ??? :')) Opel motor for the best !
No
so many sound great. but the Lancia Delta at the end was kinda special.
best sounding 4 cylinder engines? so every modern WRC
When you say F20C, I know that it is the S2000 when VTEC kicks in!
I take it back on French cars. Pure soul, they are. The worst ones is the: Peugeot 206 and Renault 4.
Every brand has its worst engines
I dislike the Peugeot 206, because my brother's girlfriend had one, and the transmission oil leaked, the rear axle snapped and continuous problems. It had been used by many people before, so problems could occur then. But, I like the car because, it looks cool, raspy,
quick and it's fun.
VisioRacer My dad had a Peugeot 206, and he said it was a death trap, Visio.
I don't know if the 206 is really that bad car, but also some pieces are just from factory bad and keep breaking down.
I live in the UK, and the cars here are wow. People always forget of the Peugeot, because British cars are where it is at.
V4 sounds so good
Wow I can't believe you put a fucking Civic in this video and not one Audi / VW 4 banger turbo. A 1.8t Audi or Golf sounds amazing and it is miles ahead of any civic lol that's a shame
Matter of opinion
+VisioRacer okay , a Civic Type R , but it still doesn't sound as good as let's say a Golf GTI 2.0 / 1.8t, a Focus ST , or an SRT4. Those cars sound way better than any civic . You should make another video like a part 2!
+David Hidalgo to me those cars sound boring, Honda is louder and sound better, those cars sound very generic
+dennis trident william you are either deaf simply not have a decent taste in exhaust sounds Bc if you have never heard an SRT4 with a nice exhaust system then... idk what to tell you
+David Hidalgo I've only seen SRT 4s with normal exhausts
