    I had one brand new in the early 90's and LOVED it. It never had a single hiccup. I still miss that pistol :-( I think you will love it.

    This is my "knock at the door" gun. And has been for many years. Recently, I bought an RIA 1911 and I love it. A tad heavy, but it's a .45. The first time I went to the door with the RIA, I chambered the round and it was good to go. But, a 1911 requires some effort, to make it safe.
    The S&W, cycle the slide, then move the thumb safety down. It's ready AND safe. Safety off, then blast your way to a police investigation. But no accidents.
    The 4516 is a heavy gun for concealed carry unless you are tall and full sized.

      A pretty ignorant comment. They both have a safety. The 4516 doesn't require the safety on. In fact, noboby that carries one uses it as anything other than a decocker, if they know what they are doing.
      In addition, it is an easy carry gun. Its weight is not a concern, if you carry for serious purposes.

    Good job getting that little jewel.
    It's always cool to see someone who bucks the trend of plastic guns with an honest solid steel gun.
    btw...I also think that the third generation Smith & Wesson guns are some of the best looking handguns ever made.

    I've owned my S&W 4516-2 since I bought it brand new in 1998. Probably the last few that were sold. since it's full stainless the recoil is very controllable because of the weight. It's a solid compact concealable 7+1 45 but it does have its heft to it. The 45ACP is essentially a defensive close range round. Nobody buys a compact 45 pistol for long range accuracy. it takes skill to shoot this particular pistol accurately. 185gr Jacketed hollow point ammo works best in this defensive format. The heavier bullets are less controllable.

    Nice presentation on a fine pistol!!! It's too bad S&W quit making the 3rd Gens. I purchased an early "no dash" 4516 just last week, can't wait to take it to the range.

    One more thing...
    I'm unsure about using the 9mm version hammer to get a spurred hammer for your 4516, but I suspect you would be better off using the hammer from the full sized version of the third generation .45 auto, the model 4506.
    If you do attempt to make that modification, a followup video about it would be really cool for the folks out there who might want to do it.

    PinkOld I did install a flash chrome spurred hammer on my 4516-1 and it totally changes the grin factor while firing the pistol or just admiring it:) it is etched on the hammer itself what models it will fit and I'm pretty sure one of the models that comes to mind is the 4506. Essentially the same pistol as full size 4506 and the true commander 4566 4-1/4" barrel. I will post a link to my photobucket so you can view a 4516 with a spurred hammer. It is well worth the change. I hated grabbing that bobbed hammer while pulling the trigger. Spurred hammers are priceless!

      Cool stuff!
      It's such a shame that they'll never make these again.

    Sweet gun, I'm with you on putting a spurred hammer on it, I'd like that much better. I bought a 5906 9mm new back in 1993 and I love it, especially the decocking lever, the magazine safety doesn't bother me the least bit. I wish I'd have bought one of these as well back then, along with a full size 4506. Like others have said, it's a shame Smith and Wesson dropped their 3rd generation of handguns, they were dynamite. Yeah they were a little on the heavy side, but rock solid.

    If you didn't have a problem with the 40 cal, you shouldn't have any problem with the 45. I found the 40, snappier than the 45.

    Just replaced the stock grips on mine with hogue. I'm wondering if I would like to take it to a high polish or not

      I bought a used 457s which is the 'cheap' version of the 4516 that smith released. thing is, i bought it with a high polish on the steel slide as well as the aluminum frame. it's so flashy that i now call it my pimp gun. people are either impressed by its pizazz or theyre seriously put off by the lack of tactical orientation. if your 4516 is blemish-free, i'd suggest not to polish it. if you have another 45 than go ahead..

    Do you happen to know if I can use 4516 mags for this or do they have to be the 4516-1 mags only?

    • @TheIntellectualSlacker
      @TheIntellectualSlacker  7 лет назад

      dreemwizard any 4516 mag should work regardless of "-"

    • @clplusp8762
      @clplusp8762 7 лет назад +1

      it will take mags made for the 457 as well. mags for the 4566 and 4506 will work but theyll stick out of the bottom being as theyre 8-rounders.

      I have a 4566 and a 457. Any Leather sig p220 or p226 holster will work for these guns.

    3 lb's ! HA ! HA! but you got uste to them because that's really all you had . I had 4506 back in the 80's . I picked ione up last year and couldn't believe how heavy it was and back then you didn't mind because that's everything good was all steel .

    Is this a good carry gun?

    • @TheIntellectualSlacker
      @TheIntellectualSlacker  4 года назад

      I never personally carried it, that being said, it was reliable (most important) and I was accurate with it. It's about g19 size but thinner. Any gun can be a good carry gun if it's reliable, your accurate with it (practice practice practice) and you have a viable carry system (good belt and holster). Some will say you need a weapon light mounting capabilities but that's a personal preference imo, which isn't an option here, so learn handheld light techniques (you'll definitely need to go to a class)
