85 kW, the "T3's", which is the Renault 1.9 F9Q dCi engine has fuel related problems. The usual suspects are rail pressure sensor, pressure regulator on the CR pump (can be dismantled and cleaned if the electric part of the solenoid is working) or rail pressure relief valve (can be dismantled and cleaned).
Also the vacuum lines and valves are prone to cracking if mishandled.
A friend got a '02. V40 P2 1.9d recently cheap but in poor condition. Blown head gasket, fuel pressure drop related problems, a lot of interior neglected, with 350K Km. As it was one of the few Volvos I've fixed I've had to learn a lot about it, since I'm supposed to keep it running for a while now.
Also, it's an engine I'm familiar with and it's as good as it can get at that mileage.
The oil catch on the dipstick can get clogged and send oil to the intake, and if not taken care of, can destroy the EGR valve. Which i prefer to "180" anyway.
Stuck thermostat will cause a head gasket failure. As will not properly bled cooling system. In this case, it was around 250€ for the parts (oil, filters, head gasket, two heater plugs, head bolts, cam cover seal, thermostat, used MAF and plastic engine cover). Can be done by anyone with a good tool set in a driveway in a day, two at the most for someone less skilled.
In my opinion, a solid car that has a few years left in it. Still prefer my '02. E39 Touring 539dA over it. :D

I bought a used V40 2003 1.9TDI, well the car itself is nice. It`s economic, and comfortable, considering I drove a Opel Astra 1.6 before, but once you start driving it daily, problems occur obvs...Sadly for me I got lucky with the guy who sold it to me, He didn`t maintain it at all. In the first week, I had to install a new Turbo, New A/C compressor, and now it has a problem with the clutch, prob gonna need to replace that also.. and some minor stuff, like oil changes etc...although any 20yr old used car, won`t be golden...Duh..Even though I was surprised that it didn`t have any oil leakage problems or rust problems..some minor issue also with the Roof panels water got through it so the roof cloth, started to come undone. But overall nice car. 8/10...Maybe if i`d check it more thoroughly I wouldn`t have those problems, but who knows.

I had the 1.6 petrol and the 115bhp td. The 1.6 had lambda issues which gave terrible fuel economy and the lambda being more expensive than what the car was worth it went down the road. The 1.9 td had had a hard life before I got to it and couldn't be rescued with the turbo passing oil and the engine was good to. A real shame as I thought it has quite nice in it's power delivery before it calved.

By lambda you mean the oxygen sensor right? That's like 30 bucks

@@Altjoni yes that's the ones. The Ebay ones at 30 scoops are rubbish and the proper ones are over about £150. The other thing put me off was that a lot of the parts couldn't be got through motor factors and when I went to try and get them through Volvo themselves they were listing the parts I needed as obsolete or on back order and most likely obsolete. So I junked them. I love the estates so if it had have been the v40 that I had instead of the s40 I probably would have tried a bit harder but obsolete at the dealer, that's not good.

I have 5-6 volvs v40 and s40 the handling thise cars have is amazing and it cant be any better than that, everything is in a very good quality order I know the only thing are the doors they feel a little weak when grabing the plasitck but they are gold if you compare them with any VW and better that his competition BMW e36 and I dont know why but you cant compare a ford or any Franche car with this cars big mistake. One V40 that I had was 400 000miles without any maintance or friquent oil changes last 10 000miles where driven without the turbo bcs it broke but I put in a new turbo and sold it like so no problems and now I daily a 165hp s40 2001 year with half a milionn kilometers top speed 240kmh (only catback exhaust and K&N dilters) and I drive it to the limits every day but change the oil on 4000miles to keep it fresh the car is a missle. So friend purchase a S/V40 and remake this video you will see it for yourself I see that this video is made by watching the stereotipes about this cars on the net.
