@@clewis5220 yes that's correct but the 4 cylinder D4 has had issues with EGR valve and EGR valve water cooled heat exchanger , and needed a lot of rectification work done by Volvo in there dealerships , some owners had to pay some were done by Volvo, 5 cylinder engine is not so unreliable
I have a 2013, D2. Its never had any faults since new. It has only had fluid changes (sometimes, not even on time) never changed trans fluid either. Its gone 150 000 ish km. Its just one of 6 cars I own. Used to be the only one I had hence the last 2 years its only used to go to shopping centers, some stores, anywhere where getting hit by kids, and careless morons is likely. Its dented, dinged and scratched pretty bad. Still means its used like 4-5 km daily. I have had to change both front springs I might not drive that slowly over curbs and shit xD and had some rusted brake disks, but that's everything. Its basically been slightly abused, but never faulted on me once. One of my other cars a 2024, model, bought new has already had an issue, needing a workshop visit, and it has been driven normally. (Mercedes GLE) Its all down to how the factory line was working the day your car was built... My V40, must have been right after lunch when machines and people alike were at their freshest or something. And my poor GLE, must have been the last car that day, when people were going on vacation that day or something. Least I'm getting a new car by Mercedes so its not a problem...

Hi there, in Brazil V40 T4 have 6 gears and T5 with 8 gears, both with torque converter, not powershift. Same engine 2.0 turbo 4 cylinders but different power configuration. Even the S60 T8 with +400 hp uses the same 2.0 turbo engine. Yes, is a good engine. Make sure if maintenance maid with specifications on right time.
Do not buy used V40 from 2012-2019 unless you want to learn how to repair engines. This car is a reliability catastrophe and I'm amazed how people consider it to be at all reliable. No, it is not. Get in touch with reality. If a car has a catastrophic engine failure, that means that you will eventually have to spend thousands on an engine which other car owner should never have to worry about. Edit: I was wrong about time period. It is 2012-2015 with last year being transitionary.

Their injectors leak oil into combustion chamber, clogging them up with carbon build up. Then engine headgasket are made from insufficiently strong material and it can shatter. Also, those year Volvos are known to catch fire from oil leakage in general. Just absolutely horrible cars from that period. You can buy them with 1.6l engines as it is Ford engines. They are also sub-par engines, but doesn't have those catastrophic issues. Later year cars are save to buy. 2015 period you have to check engine code if it is a new batch. I'm going to look at one 2016 V40 Volvo tomorrow. They had solved all of those issues. I also was looking at Ocean Racing edition V40 previously. After mechanic check up it revealed that engine was leaking oil. A fatal car. Honestly, I do not know why it existed. It might be that this period cars still had this issue not resolved. I might be at risk of getting myself into what I was advising others against. Or it might be that car was brutally beaten down. Last person drove about 130.000 km in an year and interior was in bad shape after him. He might had really messed car up and then resold it.

I have a 2014 T2. Tbh if I could go back in time I would not buy it again. I have to repair it now and the costs are extremely high. I have gasket leaks (which are very common on eco-boost engines these models have). Water-pump leak, tho it is due for replacement. Problems with idling (carbon buildup most likely, also typical). The dealer wanted to charge me 6k euros for repairs (including carbon cleaning).....
@albertocoutinho5703 There is a certain amount of these cars that have egr problems, burning oil and other issues, which are just the symptoms of an unknown problem. Mine all started when I got the recall done but I can't confirm that was the cause because at the same time it had alot of work done to fix a coolant leak which meant a lot had to be dismantleld to reach it. But the burning oil smell in my cabin vents and smoke coming from under the bonnet started after the work was done. Every now and again i would get a warning from the car telling me to put in .5L of oil, which i would and i kept it going for 2 years without much issues and then the egr went. During that time i had no burning oil smell or warnings of having to put in .5L so i thought i was the egr all along and everything was fixed but i kept doing the burning smell etc after the egr was supposed to be fixed. Then i noticed its not telling me to put oil in because its obviously not eorking anymore and without a physical dipstick i cant check the oil. Right now I have no idea of my oil level because the electric dipstick is not giving me accurate information. It always saying it's 1 bar away from being full and I know it is not accurate but the mechanic doesnt believe me. I feel like the engine block is destined to crack as ive pretty much read that is seems to happen these d2's, i thought only the 1.6 was bad but my 2L diesel is just as unreliable maybe the D3 or D4 is better but i have definitely been givena bad one. Ive read through hours of forums and reading other people's experiences and my own leads me to believe these cars are just awful and volvo is not the same company as it was 20 years ago and I will steer clear of them next time.

The D4 5 cylinder engine is best all round , pleanty of power and economically very good and low road tax in Uk £30 , lots comfort and safety too
The D4 190bhp twin turbo with the 8 speed auto pips that in my opinion and it’s only £20 uk tax ;-)

Recall by Volvo. Never had a problem. Perfect seats for a long drive.
