Steve is a real ace, watch a pro do a conscientious repair and adjustment that probably saved the lives of a whole apartment building full of unsuspecting people ! Really Nice. I am sharing with some folks I know have old heaters like this !
This furnace was new when I worked on them. I'm glad to see it still running. I used to service furnaces that were just as filthy as the blower on this one. People just forget about service. This blower is coated with cigarette tar.
I like how she was talking about her stage 4 cancer and all Stevie could say was "wow .. I've never seen a fan this bad before". Give her the gundee Steve
Great job and video Steven !! Someone needs to gag that lady, good grief she blabs a lot. Great video to show the crap we deal with in the field. That was one nasty piece of work. Sure glad they called you out there. Another thumbs up for the Testo 320 !! Take care, Brett
No shit, Talks about how much she smoked, and how she's got stage 4 lung cancer. Well Steve is not a Doctor and she is the one who laid the cigarettes on her self. Man I am glad I quit will never smoke again.
Hey Steven, nice job on extracting her dog from the blower wheel. At least it looked like a dog in that pile. That was one dirty SOB. Boy that lady can talk, but I'm sure she is happy now that the CO2 level is a real number. Keep up the good work. Ray
I watched and commented on the video the first time through Google+ which meant I couldn't read the comments till I came on RUclips to like it. The lady's blabbing made me forget how bad the blower wheel was!!!! What a mess it was
I rarely comment on videos, but I have to say I wish you were in my area. I'm impressed with your knowledge, customer service skills and equipment. You did what you could to keep the customer happy and the lady safe all the while listening to her yak. Thank you for your video. I've called half a dozen contractors in my area and haven't gotten the feeling they would be able to tell if my furnace has an issue and what to do to fix it if so. Any tips on what I questions I can ask to find a good contractor like yourself?
+Pearl of the sea ask around for refurels ,from your friends ,they will tell you in the guy is good . i would want to see a combustion analises preformed on the heated for sure . if not the guy is just guessing .
Hi Steve I have the same issue (not the dirty fan part). I have a similar furnace in crawl space. The fan motor crapped out on me, I wasnt sure at first it was a the motor just that i wasnt getting heat, Called someone in and he had a used motor in truck so swapped out to check. Once fan motor changed out Furnace ran great. Prob is he checked CO2 after this, as was in your video, left chamber was high C02 though nothing close to the levels in this video (right was ok).He went on to sell me a new furnace which i thought was my only option until i viewed this vid. Questions I have: Was the drop in CO2 in the furnace in the video a result of the cleaning of the burner or new valve or both? 2, Are replacement burners for these old furnaces difficult to get,.Thanks
smazz104 the old furnace had a non adjustable gas valve ,so i replaced the gas valve and reset gas pressure to lower c.o. levels .c.0. levels are set by air to gas mixture sometimes a simple air adjustment is all you need to lower the c.o levels all depends on situation ,
Great job. You could have just saved that ladies life and she doesn't even know it. Good thing her flue didn't get blocked. I need 2 aspirin , she gave me a headach.
I also noted that you had a lot of yellow tipping before you replaced that valve but the pilot still had quite a bit of yellow. Shouldn't it be that typical bunser burner blue?
What about the evaporator coil, that thing had to be a mess also. Good catch on that co level. The flames looked much better after replacing the gas valve If your not testing your guessing ;) Good video!!.
I almost threw up in my mouth a little just seeing that on video... How long do you give that blower motor, now that it has to do some real work for the first time in years?
right on top of the furnace before B-Vent starts, there is about 4" high C to B transition, you drill into the C-Vent. you can even have up to 12" C-Vent on top of the furnace flue collar before transiting to B
why do you replace a gas valve for high CO? Is it because the pressure is won't adjust properly, because it doesn't mix air with it or anything, its just a gate for the gas at a certain pressure. I haven't seen you actually check pressure on a valve yet.
Yes - You're right he doesn't - show - any adjusting; it'd be helpful to see and hear more about that part, for sure... ...at 12:31 he quickly mentions that the valve is non-adjustable so he needs to replace it - presumably to be able to adjust pressures to improve the CO level. Just before this point in the video (and after the cleaning) in the new readings it seems he got it down to 175 or so - not low enough to be safe, and after the new valve - and-unsaid adjusting-it?? - he got it much lower - and safe)... ...fwiw - at first and second (and third!) viewing I was puzzling as you were...
That women is 40? she sounds like she is 80 LOL. Keep smoking! Man that was nasty. Good job with testing. If you didn't test it you would have never known about the issue.
Hi Steven, I learned a lot from you videos , thanks a lot, I have question, I do not have combustion analyzer, I just have CO analyzer (UEI CO 95) is this enough to do these kind of tests, thx
actually I heard the same thing , but do I need to go with combustion analyzer or Co analyzer, I think the one you use is combustion analyzer , sorry most of my work in AC and heat pump still new in gas stuff, please advise me in this and if you have more videos about furnace or boiler inspection let me know, thanks steven , you help many people in this filed by your advices and video.
don't mean to brag or anything, but i have cleaned blower wheels that were plugged solid)) this one is typical for a smoker's house with 30 cents filter
One should use clean pilot, burners, mixing tube, orface, check outlet pressure of gas valve and if it's not 3.5 wc then adjust accordingly. Check inlet pressure confirm that it's 7wc assuming its natural gas fuel. Clock gas meter to insure it corresponds with btu input, thus I'm sure gas valve was fine, it's cause it was so f--king dirty
great vedio Steve if my analayzer is reading about 20 PPM CO on 3 of 4 heat exchanger outlets on a furnace similar to that one but the 3rd reads 65PPM is that still safe to run
Enjoy your videos Mark. I have a neighbor that has a 14 year old, Sears, 60k gas furnace. My neighbor started smelling something that made her feel sick; wasn't a gas smell, smelled like something maybe burning. That furnace had been running for a few hours. She shut off the furnace and left the house. CO detectors did not alarm. A few days later, a furnace guy came over, looked around, and took a CO reading inside the house at one of the registers. It read 2 ppm. He declared the furnace dangerous, took out the BUSS fuse. He gave my neighbor a replacement cost of $13,331 bucks for a 80% , 60k Carrier. He said she had to have the duct work pressure tested by a 3rd party, Calif. title 24. We're having Sears come by for a 2nd opinion. What should we expect on a $70 residential furnace check, what's the minimum that they should be doing? Thanks, Bob
She needs a muzzle to shut her up!!!! She talked a mile a minute from the git go, looks like nothing was done to that heater in 30 year's- good video as usual 😂😂

It was a pretty lame wok and random repair job. I do not even recommend this video to anyone. you do not clean burners like that. open the burners, take them out then clean. When the CO goes up after the fan runs it is the heat exchanger crack disturbing the air fuel ratio in the flue line creating incomplete combustion, or something is in the path of the air or fuel. Did you clock the meter? Where is this Steven's city? His job looks like you get a dental work sitting on bucket with mechanical pliers in the doctor's hand.
I can’t believe you actually tried cleaning this furnace....shoulda of told slum Lord to fo. By the looks of how old this video is...I’m assuming most people in it are daisies up.
NO way I would put my name on that old furnace. You know I know and the landlord knows the furnace is shot. Put a gas valve on furnace to cut down the gas to lowest level. The pilot light was blowing out because when the fan comes on it blows out the pilot light. Put a camera for heat exchanger down in the furnace bet you will find holes all in the heat exchanger. Better have a co2 dictator in the apt. The furnace has a draft hood on it. You know its a 1986 furnace or older. Its over 30 years old. Bet the landlord's car is not older then 3 years old. Hell cell phones were not made yet. Soot pouring out the vent hood. Looks like a law suit to me. Nope, either replace it or walk. Its not worth the $1000.00 repair. Better yet run from this landlord. He will blame it on you. Remember, the lady says she wants a NAP. What does carbon Monoxide make you want to do? take a nap! The landlord will say "he is the expert" through you right under the bus. Run don't walk
behvac well i can only do what he will pay me for .. your moto is sell, sell, sell .thats not always possable all the time .i do what i can .i told him he needs a new furnace .its safe to run for now with the new gas valve.
I would not spend the time on it either. But if the heat exchanger was cracked you would get high co level and high O2 levels with the blower running. I wouldn't be worried in his position about putting his name on it.
The landlord is definitely a cheapskate. I doubt he has a newer car. Probably keeps all his money in the bank and doesn't spend a dime on anything (or himself) unless absolutely necessary.
WOW that was dirty. Dam how many gas valves do you stock? bla bla bla holy shit!can she talk. That's when I get the soot master out weather I need it or not. lol
