Your high CO video, extremely helpful, people have no idea how dangerous CO levels can hurt family members, your testo 320 class, the simple way you teach saves lives. I can see a marketing venture here, students will sign up for your course, I'll sign up. Thanks Gilbert
Verify inlet gas pressure then manifold pressure and check chimney draft . Note- If the pressure is turned to far DOWN you might have issues with the burners lighting correctly at some point and flash out when it lights the main burners or not lighting main burners across evenly. Lots of times people change the vent pipe with the incorrect Diverter pipe height is critical at skirt to boiler
Hey Steve, love your videos! So the manifold pressure for these is usually 3.5 in. wc. and when you back off the outlet pressure you are probably bringing it down below that number. Are there any other adjustments you can make to improve efficiency? I just adjusted my gas valve down to 2.4 in. wc. because my CO was around 3500 ppm at the factory pressure which is 3.5 in. wc. That is a whole in. wc. lower than factory spec, kinda freaked me out.
Steve, what's the difference between checking co2, and pressure on gas valve, same adjusting screw? Testo 320 $1000, manometer $150. Which one? You didn't use manometer on this job?
I just did a PM on that same boiler on Saturday. I was getting a slightly high CO reading too ( around 150) couldn't adjust that shitty gas valve they put on that Burnham. All of a sudden it dropped to around 50 so I let it be. I'm not sure if maybe my meter wasnt reading correctly cause I left it in the cold truck overnight.
I guess Im randomly asking but does someone know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Roberto Damian thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
seems like this just has a set screw thats it right? can you adjust based off the output gas pressure to manufactures spec (say 3.5 WC) with manometer or do you need combustion analysis device? is the readings off because the output pressure was out of spec, or because you did some very fine tuning? i did a good deal of calling and i havent been able to find some one who does combustion anaylsis in my area. I would like to just buy a manometer and check the gas pressure and call it a day .
Bardia Ghajari I walked into a boiler yesterday that the manifold pressure was dead on at 3.5” and the co reading was over 10,000ppm. Setting gas pressure isn’t enough
just subscribed man, love the vids...I'm a 4th year plumbing and heating apprentice up here in Canada. I love all these trades, and after I'm done plumbing I'd like to get my hvac as well!! I'm an old guy just starting as I wanted to learn something new hahaha. A quick question, that little digital machine, how does that thing work, is there a probe that measures the gas mixtures and stuff? what make and model is it? I'm always looking for new tech tools to buy!!
Have you looked into the testo 308? It gives you a digital reading and also paper sample. You can sync it up with the 320 too for printouts. Nice video.
you got lucky meter didn't lock up, i have 310 and it looked up for 24 hours after like 1800 ppm, so i had to wait a day to finish what i was doing. Generally they don't recommend to keep probe in if it's that high, just check it quick and if reading going up, decrease pressure and recheck
steven lavimoniere It's given me a message a few times to replace the sensor after that shut down its time to order one up gotta take care of the old girl
Most people will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure to CO levels of approximately 1 to 70 ppm but some heart patients might experience an increase in chest pain. As CO levels increase and remain above 70 ppm, symptoms become more noticeable and can include headache, fatigue and nausea. At sustained CO concentrations above 150 to 200 ppm, disorientation, unconsciousness, and death are possible. I guess the short answer is 70 ppm but 0-8 ppm the normal background is best or get curious why. I just read CO detectors start alarm at 50 ppm. Quoted from US Product Safety Commission. Your videos are dead serious important.
Nice video Steven, No offence but you dont need to do a sooth test on gas fired equipment, sooth tests are only done on oil burners. As you mentioned before complete combustion is the key, i would have this customer nominated for a new boiler in the near future O2/CO2 level can be much higer O2 3.0/4.0% CO2 9.5/10 a lot off extra savings. Testo 308: The digital smoke tester is a hand-held instrument for determining the smoke number of oil firing installations. These systems can be monitored using the testo 308 and checked for compliance with the applicable limit values.
Did that furnace have a fixed regulator and fixed orifice? I have a 23 year old Trianco Heatmaker-M2 boiler, which started kettling 3-4 years ago. I added a temperature controller, which monitors the water temperature at the input to the boiler and interrupt the heating cycle, before kettling can begin (beats waking to a cold house). Yesterday the exhaust CO was measured at 100ppm, according to the tech from the gas company. Then I throttled the gas supply, by partially closing the ball-valve - just enough to hear a change in the flame, the tech told me the CO dropped to "0". The tech was concerned about operating the boiler with the ball valve partially closed, but we are in a cold snap (who isn't right now). Since the boiler CO is acceptable ("0ppm"), I'm not shut-down, but need to service/resolve the issue. Trianco is defunct; sold off to Waterpik, then ???? There is a 3rd party parts supplier, or two), but Trianco-trained service techs aren't going to be available, nor will support. My boiler has a NON-ADJUSTABLE valve/regulator [description: "gas valve, negative pressure, White Rodgers"], which looks very much like the one you replaced. It also has a fixed orifice, for which replacements can still be purchased, in a set of three (different sizes, I assume(?)). The kettling issue came on suddenly and the water in the system is almost 100% the same water I filled it with 23 years ago, so mineral accumulation in the boiler coils shouldn't be the cause. After watching your video, I'm thinking that maybe the regulator wore out and is no longer regulating properly, is at all, so the gas flow is too high. (Orifice replacement won't fix that.) Seems that maybe an adjustable valve/regulator would be better than the non-adjustable original! THANKS!
Great job Steve. Like everyone else I liked the customer. good Chatt. You're really good with that Testo I'm still learning how to use it properly. It sucks that I never received the cheat sheets it must of got lost in the mail.
Hey steve i have exact burner and valve you did not show how to remove VR800 valve.and i thout that new valve 4506 was good right outta box wish you could come here to whitman Great vid thanks i could use yeah
Hey steve I got a problem with my boiler, The pilot is on but when I turn the thermostat on the boiler won't ignite, I was braking some concrete on the basement I don't know if that has anything to do with it or is the gas valve, how can I find out?
word to the wise. when using flush pipe adapters always use steel like you see that Steve is using never brass or bronze. i've seen them crack before...t
The Chosen Honeywell valves such but the one he used isn’t that bad. I have just as many issues with Robertshaw. The small Honeywell valves used on most new modern furnaces (like all the air ease/Armstrong valves) are complete junk though

gilbert de la torre the testo 320 is a great tool .there are some students watching my videos ... thanks for the comment gilbert
There's nothing like the work of a professional. Job well done Steve!
kdog323 thanks for the comment
Nice job, the customer was very friendly. So important to have your furnace or boiler checked every year.
DC Rickerson i agree very important to have yearly service
Steve your really good at your profession and very easy to watch
Steve, Nice Job. The adjustable gas valve made a huge difference. Cool Customer
S Sam yes the adjustable gas valve is a must
Verify inlet gas pressure then manifold pressure and check chimney draft .

The customer is hilarious. Great job Steve.
leanorlando he was a good guy father of the homeowner
Good job Steve. Another safe boiler thanks to you and the 320.

You are definitely good at what you do Steve. Just by watching you I got my boiler running great :))))
Joe k jr. thanks for watching
steven on a hydronic boiler the flames are very low do you think its the C O on the gas valve or is it the unit is dirty
Old man just wanted someone to talk to , that's cool , great job Steve .
justin henning he was a good sport .
this was interesting to watch how all the testing and everything was done, very good video, i like this, keep up the good work steven and be safe,
letseeitplease i will be doing more videos like this
I grew up in Texas and I get such a kick out of listening to you yankees kvetch at each other and bust each other's chops. :)
I like the customers voice. He sounds like a character from Sesame Street. Or a muppet
I did not see you doing the soap suds test to see if the gas connections were leaking.Sorry if I missed it, did you use a meter?
Steve, what's the difference between checking co2, and pressure on gas valve, same adjusting screw? Testo 320 $1000, manometer $150. Which one? You didn't use manometer on this job?

Robert Doherty we are going to have to bring our meters in now it getting cold out ..
It looks like I have a video I can use in my combustion class next week. Good Job as usual
Larry Cole thanks larry for the support brother

@Roberto Damian It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
great video right here! on a boiler like that does it matter if new replacement gas valve is a slow acting or fast acting? is there a big difference?
Hybrid nj it was a 2 stage valve
seems like this just has a set screw thats it right?

Any help around Baltimore and dundalk area for gas (steam) boiler heater?
I’m curious what you would have found if you clocked the meter after your adjustments
Just curious why you were not checking gas pressure at the same time as CO test? Just curious for my own practice no hate lol
I like customers like him
T&N Services LLC. he was cool
That old valve IS adjustable, the small slotted screw next to the phillips screw on the top right corner of the valve is the regulator adjustment.
amazing how you deal with customers. i cant be bothered while im working. im working on it though.
emutiny dealing with the customer is important so your on the same page as them
Sickness has no age. Good statement
Do you just adjust the manifold pressure on the gas valve to fix this problem ?
just subscribed man, love the vids...I'm a 4th year plumbing and heating apprentice up here in Canada. I love all these trades, and after I'm done plumbing I'd like to get my hvac as well!! ***** i will have to look into it
steven lavimoniere Having a number value is invaluable.
Hey Steve, I have the Testo 310, I wish I would have bought the 320. I like the colour screen.
+Gerry Pomanti yea the 320 is way better i believe
Just wondering what the manifold pressure was with the old gas valve if it was over-firing that was causing the high CO?
i could not adjust the old valve thats why i changed it
Nice job Steve love the customer relations LOL
Harry Dickson he wouldn't shut up lol
Lmao
Them old guys love to talk your ear off. LOL. Great job on that Steve.
Charles
hannarye thanks charles for the support brother
excellent job steve I wish I had your knowledge or at least the baby mama's!!!!
Is that homer Simpson in the background?

The ppm reading is done in the smoke stack or just in the vicinity of the boiler?
I had an RTU a few days ago with CO so high my meter shut off to protect itself the manifold pressure was 6.5"
airkraft1 i have had my meter shut of many times ...one today manifold pressure was 8.6 on natural gas..it should be 3.5
steven lavimoniere
It's given me a message a few times to replace the sensor after that shut down its time to order one up gotta take care of the old girl
With levels that high, and having to back the gas way off, I wonder if his gas company meter regulator was off?
***** it might be .
Very informative. You really know your stuff.
eric4467 thanks for watching

Pipe dope -- brand/type?
Good video.
And how much was the bill?
Nice work Steve. I've been working with steel pipe at vocational school lately.
PlausableApple4 steel pipe is all part of the trade. i am sure you will do well ..
I'm doing pretty well right now. I need to work on my measurements, that's about it.
take every thing from center to center then deduct your fittings
@11:14: My eyes nearly popped out of my head. 2300 ppm CO AF?!
EDIT: And you dropped that to 11? Wow. Well done.
As usual, nice job Steven!!! A little snow on the truck this morning?
Brad1237202 yes snow this morning

if no valve ?
good job Steven

Yeah i have heartburn..its called customers and neighbors LOL
dklucas1 its all in a days work
Cool video Steve
acechoice45 thanks ace
Great job and video like always
I have a problem with a heater like that
only ignites the flame but others do not light flames
valve will be your cambiastes
notice how the design geniuses put a big machine screw head in the way of a wrench on the pilot gas nut at the valve?
word to the wise. when using flush pipe adapters always use steel like you see that Steve is using never brass or bronze. i've seen them crack before...t
Those honeywell valves are the worst! I had two brand new ones out the box that were no good...Use the robertshaw 24v gal valves instead
The Chosen Honeywell valves such but the one he used isn’t that bad. I have just as many issues with Robertshaw.
The small Honeywell valves used on most new modern furnaces (like all the air ease/Armstrong valves) are complete junk though
Want to hear something sad.. I’m here watching how to adjust pipes because idk how.. my job just told me to learn and take care of the customer
Damn bro were you getting sleepy. that was so high CO counts at first. Anything under 80 ppm is much better.
+Robert Weeks i usally like to run the unit for a bit before putting in the probe .because of the high c.o. at first on start up
Every gas appliance has high co on light off. Best not to put the combustion analyzer into the flue till after it has ran for at least 10-15 sec
Steve: you rock in your videos!
Must have been a big squirrel
brooklyntheboyful i am sure it was
nice has leak test
LOL - "Was she Russian."
Way cool video...
Must be a joisey thing
haha "she slap him around"
Jason the Plumber ya she might have been a large woman ... wanting to drive the bus ..wearing the big boy panties
