There's no increase, lots of higher functioning children especially girls were going undiagnosed before that. It was always there just not diagnosed. Girls especially there are lots of adult women getting diagnosed in their 30's and 40's because back then they thought it was just boys that had it so they were never tested for it as children.

I have a 12 year old daughter and a 10 year old son. Both diagnosed with Autism. It wasn't until my daughter was diagnosed, and I was learning about Autism in girls (and how it's much different than in boys), that I realized I might be Autistic too. Everything I was learning sounded exactly like me, and all the struggles I had growing up. I went through the process, and got my own diagnosis too. I really wish I was diagnosed as a kid, instead of at 36 (now 39). It's such a relief to know why I am the way I am.

All three of my adult children have autism. I was 28 with first, 31 with second and 34 with third. My oldest son, now 33, also has congenital heart disease. My daughter, 31 has severe autism. Non verbal. My youngest son, high functioning. Now works for Microsoft. Back in the day, the diagnosis was beyond crushing ... what did I do/not do as a mom? I always took great care of myself. I spent all of my 30's in and out of heart emergencies and trying to juggle my daughter who could not communicate. The best decision made was to own it and get the official diagnosis for all of them. Schools were JUST starting to respond ... this was all emerging in the 90's. Everything was a battle. Just be kind ... so many kids, so many needs ... my new husband and I started a 501c3 and created a life home for our daughter and two others with autism because kids with autism grow up to be adults with autism and what do you do??? What happens to your child if you die?? She has a wonderful life and care. Because we planned ahead. We see her almost every day. She will never work. She will never be able to care for herself. I don't like how the today show hosts responded when the doctor/researcher announced that 1 in 38 children are auitsitc now. They said it with such disgust, like it was a travesity. Its not. Autism has been around since the beginning of time. How about teach your own children who are not autistic (neurotypical) to be kinder and more tolerant of those children who are autistic. My daughter is autistic and i'm so tired of the mean kids she has to deal with on a daily basis and their ignorant parents who are judgemental towards my child even after trying to explain to them. Most of them respond like "i'm glad its not my child". I had to pull my daughter out of school because the kids were so mean and wouldn't play with her and the teachers refused to communicate with me as a parent on how my daughter is doing in class or what is going on in school. you don't understand how hard it is raising a child who is autistic sometimes. Constantly advocating for your child to get services such as speech therapy, occupatinal therapy, social skills groups and praying that you will stay healthy long enough to care and look after your autistic child once they become adults. How about gaining more knowledge on how to be more accepting and non judgemental towards autisitc children and autistic adults. my hope and prayer is that our society will hopefully become more tolerant to those with autism. When you see someone having a tantrum or a hard time not to judge but to have grace for those people as you don't know what the situation is and they may be overwhelemed by sensory things (sound, lights, crowds, disruption in routine).

Let's also not forget that there's been an overhwhelming number of adults diagnosed in the last few years. That's not because they got autism recently, that's not how it works. But rather because they were missed the first time around.
We're starting to see now that autism isn't a curse, or damage or the result of bad parenting. Unlike what the conformists insist. And it's certainly not caused by one factor that some simpletons want to believe to justify their dumb smartness.

Why you would have more kids after having one additional needs kid…I mean I don’t get it personally. Knowing how much I’ve suffered due to ADHD and bipolar, I couldn’t live with the guilt if I ever passed that on. I’ve seen friends with baaad issues go and have kids, then moan that the kids have issues like them. Well what did you think was gonna happen? We all knew the second they announced the pregnancy that the kid was destined to be messed up some how. And we were right. Major cleft palate and lip and the kid isn’t even born yet. I guarantee this kid will also have an intellectual disability, because both parents are neurodivergent. They can’t even care for themselves, the house is a massive mess…no idea how they’ll care for this additional needs kid. Doesn’t make sense to me why they’d even want a kid.

No. There have always been females on the autism spectrum. They’ve just been harder to diagnose because they do not exhibit hyperactivity, which makes on the spectrum do. My 22 year old daughter was diagnosed at 18. She was always different, but she never stood out in the classroom for being disruptive or aggressive, which makes makes on the spectrum typically stand out at a young age. On the contrary, she was quiet and docile. She was intellectually quite brilliant, but socially very awkward and also uninterested in the topics her peers were. But she flew “under the radar” in the classroom because she got good grades and was obedient. The reason girls are finally being diagnosed earlier is because they have finally begun to understand that girls on the spectrum don’t exhibit as many obvious signs.

Not a disease. It’s genetic so you don’t “end up” with it. And they already said,, it’s because of increased awareness and testing. My whole family is autistic but I’m the only one diagnosed because back in their day it wasn’t known about

These kids don't have autism, it's the way that doctors determine you may have autism but that's only because parents these days don't know how to raise children. I witness it everyday parents letting their children do whatever with no discipline.

Oh sure, not tolerating loud environments or struggling with harsh fabrics in clothing is all due to "parents not knowing how to raise children".

@@Y2.903 You claim you're mature, but you don't act like it.
Autism has nothing to do with "lack of discipline". If anything autistic people are more likely to receive harsh discipline for stimming in class, or not understanding cryptic social cues. Which is the absolute worst way to approach autism.
