  • Gallery Espace’s relationship with materiality has been a defining one, especially with artists making history by exploring and shaping their beloved materials. ‘A river of unrest… a delta of dreams’ is also a similar show and a declaration of Paula Sengupta’s love for paper and textile. Of course, Wajid-Ali-Shah - the 11th and the last Awadh ruler, who made generous contributions to the Indian Arts - and the Sundarbans are all woven together in the narrative of the show which we will be exposed to further today.
Paula Sengupta, who hardly needs an introduction, is a distinguished academic, curator, visual artist, and writer. She is currently the Head of the Department of Graphics-Printmaking and Dean of Visual Arts at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata. A passionate traveler, Paula brings her travel experiences into her art. Today, she brings her travel companion to share their sojourns together, where Sujoy Das - who is also her life companion - will be showing his photographs which have been inspirational to Paula’s works. Sujoy is renowned for his expertise in photography, trekking, and his extensive research on the Himalayas. A published author, he has co-written a book with Arundhati Roy, among other prominent writers. His photographs have been featured globally, and he is also the co-founder of the adventure and travel outfit 'Southcol' where he also holds his photography workshops.
‘The Sundarbans - a journey in the tide country’ will be initially led by Sujoy who will be showing photographs of the original landscape of these jungles and then there will be a presentation followed by a walk-through led by Paula where Paula will introduce us to her work in great detail.
