This is really helpful. I always ask for layers at the salon, since my fine hair always has more body, more even curl, and more volume when it has layers. The stylist will argue with me every single time, insisting I need to stick to all one length with fine hair. After arguing awkwardly about who knows my hair better, I fold before I become angry, she cuts it all one length, then it just hangs limp and the natural wave is off-kilter. Then I give her money. So frustrating, and it's the same routine at every salon! I now hate going to the salon. This video is encouraging, and I might just try this myself!!
I agree. There are too many incompetent stylists out there who don't listen, and, unfortunately, they tend to be males. I had a problem with my daughter's hair where her thick, wavy hair was extremely dry on the top layer and constantly matted. Her godmother had been taking her to her salon and I had suggested layering it. My advice was ignored by all and the problems persisted. Too many salons seem to focus on high maintenance hair styles and selling products. I ended up personally cutting her hair in layers and that solution worked great. Her hair looks much healthier and is much easier to maintain - tangles are almost non-existent.
K Day I do sympathize , but remember at the end of the day it is YOUR hair , you have to live with it every day not your stylist ❗️. If your currant stylist refuses to listen to you find one who WILL 👍🏼. 💕

@@suesmith3744 I am 54 and have had only ONE stylist in my adult life do it as asked, its not as simple s to find another stylist. i live in the Dallas area and have access to 'master" stylist and have paid as much as $125 for a cut, and NO, it was no different than the $35 cut. I even went to a redken school in July, was given a typical hair cut and after asking for a technique to help my crown area ( the reason for going there in the first place because of a sam villa video/technique ) was told there was really nothing that would help other than teasing it and using a few redken products. shrug shoulders.
I FB Sam Villa and was instructed to use redken salon locator, it directed me to a Walmart salon ?????
If only hairdressesr like this lived outside of youtube.... There would be so many happy people in the world that would not be looking at this great videos
That is so true! I can't seem to ever get a decent cut and if I could find a real professional I would drive a hundred miles to get a good haircut!
Charles Hall always when you walk to a new salon ask the reception to put you with a master stylist or the most expert stylist that salon has. Be prepared to pay what that professional stylists weight in term of experience and education. I guarantee you you will be so happy you got what you asked for.
Real educated stylists it’s hard to find .. you will only find them at very high end salons not the corners cheap ones ! Im s H stylist and I’ve attended high education classes with this company and those classes are very expensive - but only driven and real professionals know how to. And that’s why you will pay a lot of money for that haircut u really want . My hair cuts starts @ $150 + why?bc I’m well educated in my field and I know I’m worth it!

Here's what I don't understand..often the great haircuts I remember getting as a teenager, when $16.50 - $22.00 was the going rate for a
' master stylist ' can't reliable be had, without getting lucky and being told you need to spend $150.00 before a 20% tip and to maintain at home..that much again in ' quality products '..
What's more I see stylist here confirm that when they were in school 40 years ago, this was the way they were taught to provide a haircut!
I go into a salon looking for someone who received the basic education in learning these techniques to begin with--
The additional ' expertise ' should be the result of learning to apply these principles to a variety of different hair types and individual features, not learning to cut hair successfully.
While it is a fact that everything costs more..my bill..your education.. we both have the responsibility to determine that we are making wise purchasing decisions..
A happy customer is a repeat customer..one who will provide you with a plethora of referrals from other customers who share that commitment to patronizing an establishment they trust and the resulting Faith to purchase both your up sell services for color or treatments and the product referrals that add to your bottom line..
Yes hair services are more than than were in the 80's and 90's but you guys have to recognize that most of us don't make 8-10 times what people did back then.
Business success still comes from offering a quality service at a great price point- your ability to deliver this will provide the competitive advantage that allows you to have the financial security and working conditions that suit your desires.

as a stylist who has a lot of clients with incredibly fine hair- and trouble with letting go of fundamental lessons- this was so helpful. I’ve always grown really frustrated with not quite having the same results in the sides that I do in the back, and have this fear that my clients aren’t getting what they want. this was really eye opening and definitely something to add to my repertoire of techniques for fine hair

@@chaoswitch1974 I’m sure I’ve had my fair share of mistakes with ultra fine hair, but in learning things like this and being new to the industry, it’s definitely brought about a notable change in the results I’ve been seeing with client satisfaction. I hope that you have/find a stylist who listens to your needs and goals for your hair.
Being able to cut fine hair and curly and wavy hair dry will definitely set you apart. As well as using square layers on fine and wavy and curly hair. Almost no one can do these.
Its making people turn away from the industry and towards videos like this to do it themselves.
My neighbor did this on my chest-length hair. I am so happy with the outcome. It is perfect. Cut the overall shape wit a slight u-shape first. It looks full, but soft and has movement.

I have super fine hair. I have lived with it many many many years. I stopped going to hairdressers 30+ years ago and now cut my own hair. NO ONE knew how to cut fine hair back then. And I only do a "passable" job now, as I cut my hair when it's dry, and I don't follow any rules except to angle the scissors to try to achieve the layer I want. I hope present-day stylists watch your video because you absolutely nailed it. If you lived near me I would start going to YOU to cut my hair. Hopefully your technique becomes a STANDARD in your industry. Thank-you for sharing your expertise.
No one knows how to cut super fine hair still. I refuse to pay money for the job I can do myself! I've been given an axe job on my baby fine hair way too many times.

Great tutorial, this video has inspired me to enroll at my nearest cosmetology school. My wife has thin medium length and for the last 4 years she complains that she cannot find a stylist to cut her hair the way she would like it due to their lack of experience for addressing "thin" hair so she just flips her hair over and cuts it with some cheap scissors but her hair still needs some finishing touches. Because of this video I am going to help my wife, she will feel more beautiful and confident. Thanks again for this awesome video post. Just imagine all of that $$$ you'll save by doing this for her. For the hell of it get a "money jar" for each hair cut pay what you would usually pay for one.& as your doing that for 6 months or even a year & see how much $$$ you saved in that period of time! Time for that vacation.🕊🇨🇦🌷

I've trimmed my mom and sisters' hair before, but now that we're in quarantine, my mom wanted me to do more than just a trim. This video was SUPER helpful, and she loves the finished product. I'm no hair expert. I'm in the medical field. But this really did help me give my mother a really nice haircut :)

I took just enough cosmetology classes when I was in high school to be confident enough to cut my own hair and my family’s hair. I’ve always struggled with doing layers in my fine hair especially because I like to wear it longer than shoulderlength. This was so helpful and I appreciate it very very much.
I almost broke down and went to a beautician to get the weight lifted out of the top part of my hair. I’m just so glad that I was able to do it myself with your guidance. It’s much easier for me to except small errors that I might make then to deal with a huge one mistake that that I’ve paid for and takes a year to grow out.

I have been to many hairdressers and most do not know how to cut. I love this video. You are very good.
As a person with long fine hair I really appreciate this! People literally give me mullets with zero hair left on the sides and they texturize my hair into these airy pointy layers that do nothing for me. I end up with what I call “air hair” because it’s like sections of it will be so thinner that they end in points of 1-2 hairs. Why do hairdressers do this? How can I as a client get what I’m asking for? I’ve said “don’t connect, don’t face frame, cut it blunt, no more texture needed” and I get ignored most of the time. I’ve had one person disconnect my layers and the next person comes in and reconnects them so all the growing out I just did for a year is GONE in one haircut. 😐 if you can give me help with language I would LOVE that. I want long fat layers no back layering a bit of layering on the sides and a side-swept bang. I’ve referred to this as a child’s haircut because the simplest cut is the best on MY hair. People take chunks out of it and my clip in extension collection shows it! They take the hair I NEED. And I have to “borrow” all of my back hair just to have any on the side!!
You want movement in the sides and no layers in the back right? They need to build graduation at your face frame, so when they cut for a face frame, the elevation is lower and the hair is combed forward and down, as opposed to high and angled. I section out the side perimeter and don't include it in any layering to avoid that cut away feeling. I visually blend very fine hair and cut it dry. A side swept fringe should not be an issue. I don't understand that problem.
@@rain3743 apparently you don't understand because you already know what needs to be done for a great result. What I see so often are stylists that are "stuck" in the way they were originally taught, their safety zone. Continuing education is a must. I contented to show my stylist two of these great tapes before she touches it again!

The back isn’t too bad but he layered the sides and I miss having long hair . I’m so pissed off . No more haircuts for me….. I’m guessing your hair all grew long again
I've been here so often. I'll either end up with a mullet or with the weirdest drop between the bag and the front because they realize they ran out of hair. I'm just looking for a hairstylist that I won't need to trim myself after I get home 😆
Thank you for the tips especially the one where you eliminate a ¼" of hair from behind the ear. Including this section with the side instead of the back, then pulled vertical is new to me. Beautiful, simplistic cut.

Now I’ve grown it for 2 years & I want the length but need the volume..... so delighted to watch this video. I’ve had a little training but my career took a different direction:) so I just give hair cuts to friends and family. 7.39 The reason why more and more people don't visit a hairdresser anymore. The client wants this haircut, but the hairdresser MUST blend for his/her own safety feeling. So the costumer goes home with the wrong - but blended - haircut, looks disappointed in the mirror 15 times a day for 2 months, while the hairdresser can't remember her anymore, and she tries to find another hairdresser who does the hair she wants. She considers cutting her own hair.

That's why I cut my own hair, I haven't visited a hairdresser for almost 3 years once again (yeah before that i did the same for more than 2 years but i was still a teenager who got a mess on her head lol)

I feel better about my self discovered technique since it's so similar. That negative space ALWAYS proves challenging but I'm glad others are on the same page.
Is there some language I can use to ask my stylist for this? She always tells me my hair is too fine for layers.
Mine says the same thing. I don't get it.
Make sure you ask for a long enough consultation so your stylist has enough time or contact them before and just say hey I came across this Sam Villa video for layers on fine hair and I was wondering if this would be a technique we could try on my hair! If she truly cares about making you happy, she’ll watch the video and either try it out or explain to you why it may not be right for your hair. If she doesn’t want to watch the video then find a new stylist because we are here for YOU,we should always be learning, and personally, I love learning new techniques and Sam Villa has great educational videos.

Change your Hairstylist !!! There are always better one you can search for.
I always used to end up having to show them a couple pictures for us to be on the same page-but DEFINITELY have them explain back to you what you want done once they say they understand, in as much detail as they can. That's helped me immensely---worse case scenario, at least you'll be able to tell how far off they may be.
Ask for concave layers. If they ask you what’s that then fine a different stylist.
Now if only I can find a professional that can give a cut like this. I end up with layers over a bob, a bowl cut with the top separate from the bottom or a modified mullet. SO frustrating. I would love to see a video teaching us how to talk to our hair professionals in terms that we both understand the meaning.

Yes ! Several times already. But I have a tendency to cut my own hair anyway. I am never happy with hairdressers where I live. I am from France and I am use to really great quality cuts. no one seems to know how to cut hair around here. It’s all long hair or all chopped up or it just doesn’t fit the hair type. I have mostly given up on hairdressers. If someone followed this school I would definitely go to them.
Yeah, but if you don't know about haircutting I don't understand a $&%% word he says- it's all technical- the sections, the geometrrical terms, the arrogance.
YEP!! - But Not my hair- which is really thick, but family members whose hair is really fin and totally unfamiliar to me!

I am a hairstylist and I cut very fine hair and curly hair. I use the same technique. I had to adapt to this out of necessity. Always great results. I use techniques no one else uses.

He is easy to understand, I learned something about how not to have my hair to thick and bushy in the back, by angling the layers and following this, my hair is very thick though, thank you Andrew, love your style.

Awesome video thank you! I cut my daughters fine hair and I have the issues you discuss at the start. Last cut I did had similar angles to this but then I had to take a diamond section at the crown to kindof blend the layering because of her crown being much more dense and the layers starting as a bit of a shelf. This seems like a better and quicker method. Thank you!

Do you cut your girls's hair, yourself, too? I've been cutting my girls's for years (I also have done my own cuts & colors for years, and gotten compliments from professionals, so I know I can at least do a decent job, though not of course as good as someone like this). I've been doing mine for twenty+ years, but videos like this are amazingly helpful--wish they'd been around when I started cutting mine!

I've been losing my hair this last year. I saved it for the dermatologist and it's a gallon sized bag. I can't stop crying about it and the Drs didn't know why it's falling out. It was long sms full but now short and thin. It's starting to look like a frickin mullet and I need it cut! I have no idea what to do,who to go to or what style... I'm sooo lost.....girls be thankful for the hair you have😢this video gave me a little hope of doing layers and maybe it'll look decent😔
It could be a hormonal issue. I had a lot of hair loss and acne and it ended up being a hormonal problem. The first time I went to a dermatologist he dismissed me but don’t give up my second dermatologist was able to see the problem.

Ive been trying to find a hair stylist to do this type of layering. This is old school layers. I tried to explain this method before I saw this video to my current hair stylist and she looked at me like I was crazy. You know, the "you don't know what your talking about" look. I am going to get a wig like this and bring it with me so I can demonstrate. 😂😉
Andrew you are by far the best haircutting teacher! You explain concepts well and take your time to allow us to absorb it all, LOL. But I must ask for more of a reason about the back layering technique to understand -- What's the difference between turning your cutting angle to horizontal on a 90 degree horizontal layer from simply combing and cutting the layers at 45 degrees instead? Does it create a curved cut or something?

This is great.. Unfortunately I don't know any hairdressers near me who know how to deal with my fine hair. I always dread when they wash my hair too. Ends up in never-ending knots. I wish there were more hairdressers as educated about fine hair. No matter how much dead ends I get cut off I always end up with knotty hair
Make sure your stylist removes the plug from the sink. That little thing will tangle the hell into your fine hair (if it’s long).

Another annoying thing is they put a ton of shampoo in which we don't Need, so our hair is completely stripped of moisture.
Hello, I have been a stylist for over 30 years I am also an instructor. Fine hair will always knot it is just because it is easier to damage. Always use conditioner after you shampoo. Shampoo is alkaline to remove gels, hairspray and environmental dirt from the hair. Conditioner is acid based to bring the hair back to the correct pH. Be sure you use one for fine hair but always condition. A lot of my fine haired clients don't like conditioner until I explain why they need it. Also rinse longer so you remove the weight of the conditioner from the hair. A very light argan oil is also great for fine hair and will not weigh it down. Place your mousse or root lifter at the root only as using on the ends will only weigh your hair down. I hope I have helped.

As long as remember myself, I always cried after haircuts so at some point I grew it long and was getting just regular blunt trims. Now that I'm 43, the hair quality is changing (it's thinning, and straight hair became partially ;-) wavy) and overall look is not sophisticated. Is blunt bob with side swept bang or no bang at all is too "vintage" looking? Also, length to shoulder blades - where exactly it is? What is the ideal length for 40+ fine haired lady who is also Petite 5'3" Inverted Triangle (shoulders wider than hips, wide chest, small breasts - mini tennis players/swimmer )body type? What cut would make me look my best? Thank you.

Me too! No one ever knows how to cut my fine, thin hair. I end up looking scraggly. Even if I ask for no layers, they always layer.
kathie ellis true...most can't cut fine hair correctly...better off to do it yourself...that's how the Farrah design was made...by cutting it yourself...;-)
blueshoes915. One thing I just learned was to ponytail the lower half of my hair, and tell the stylist you just want thin layers with the top, then your hair isn't getting thinned out like they usually do.

I noticed that he took his TIME cutting her hair. He was precise. Many hairdressers grab scissors and do a fast cut and the results show it. Love how this looks and was surprised that the hair did look fuller. When you pay top dollar you deserve a nice haircut.
