  • Salon guests are requesting layers that are not visible on the surface, you may hear referred to as invisible or ghost layers. They want fullness, movement, and body to their hair without seeing actual layers. Discover with Education Director for Sam Villa Andrew Carruthers as he shares this texturizing technique that can be applied to thick, medium or fine hair types. This technique can build expansion in medium to fine hair types, and done in another way can lean thick hair. Also adding movement and texture to both types.

    I had a stylist do this 10+ years ago. I had no idea what he was doing but it was amazing!!! Sadly, I moved away and could never figure out what he was doing. I have a mix of fine to thick strands, but overall very dense hair. He cut from close in and worked out (from under the hair). He could get so much hair thinned out and the top would hold the shorter hair strands down. Amazing amazing amazing way to cut hair.

    About 10yrs ago I had a hairdresser who did this technique and was the only person I'd ever heard of who did this, then or now. It was the best technique for my thick hair and it grew out beautifully between cuts. I experienced it with hair down to my waist (which was my norm)and later with a bob after donating my length and it was beautiful for both lengths.

      Hi Princess... one suggestion would be to just tell your hairdresser that you saw a video the interested you and your curious if something like this would work for your hair. If they are open to it, send them the video. As long as you approach it from the angle of curiosity and allow them to guide the decision, they won't feel like you are telling them what to do :-) Hope that makes sense! • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  4 года назад +3

      You'd need to be a little careful with this on thick wavy hair if the client is not blowing it out straight. If the shorter pieces underneath are too dramatic, it could cause the hair to expand.

      Use a sharp razor, you don't need a shear..

      Hi Selma! You can do the exact same technique regardless of length.

      You could definitely use a razor for a similar approach! Nice thinking.

    ruclips.net/video/B4jO4jgVcWg/видео.html with the thicker hair that you're trying to...what, I didn't get? why with the thicker hair we work from the top of the section down rather from the underneath?.. Great video!

    I still don’t understand why the technique changes for thicker hair. Can you explain that a bit better?

    What happens to all the mannequin heads when they’re used up? I’ve always wondered.

    Can you do this technique and still do visible layers on top? Or is that going to create some horror lol

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  4 года назад +13

      silkesilke100 You can definitely combine the techniques. Especially on hair that tends to be very dense, taking out weight in this way helps to create the interior movement... then if you want more surface layers to adjust weight balance or to create more visible texture on the top, you would just layer as usual. Just be a little cautious because if you do a lot of the interior layering first, after you add the surface layers, it could get a little sparse on the ends

      @@hey956 it actually wasnt too bad!! I just followed this video exctly. I have thick but fine hair. I don't like obvious layers so this was exactly what I was looking for - thinning out the 'heaviness' at the bottom. Since I cut it 6 months ago I didn't get it cut professionally until just recently. very happy, great video!

      Did you do the reverse like he said to do for thick(dense) hair where you start your shortest pieces from topside and not the underside of each section? I too have fine strands but it’s very thick!

    2 years hago I asked my hairdresser to cut my hair like this, I showed her 3 photos of the shape i wanted, i ended up like Kiki Dee in the video "don't go breaking my heart", or a lost Ramone, she has no fucking idea of what she did to me.

    Isn't that a graduation?

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  4 года назад +1

      Nice! very good question :-) You are probably noticing that the hair is being cut from shorter at the bottom of the section to longer at the top of the section. Depending on what cutting system you are trained in, many will define that as "graduation" from a terminology standpoint. This technique would be a tough one to classify since your not building weight up the head shape which is the other usual definition of graduation. Great question and a fun rabbit hole to chase down :-)
