Just bought my first camera, Sony A7 III, watched all your videos on and around it! Love it all man
Appreciate it!
Shout Out to you Chris.Thank you for the full and half-cage comparisons.I I am trying to decide which cage I want to use, establish a budget and overall see which build I would like best on my newly arrived FX3. You rock man for giving the part numbers, that pretty cool cini-cap advertisement.
Ty for showing the different rigging options. Much appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. My biggest complaint about the recent smallrig cages (starting with the A7SIII cage) is that they stopped reinforcing the top of the cage with a bridge across the front of the camera body (see the a7SIV cage for instance) and without that, the top of the cage is VERY weak (and it flexes if your rig gets even decently heavy). My a7RIV cage is ROCK solid because of this front reinforcement bar, but my a7SIII and FX3 cages flex an "unnerving" amount, especially the FX3 which is pretty thin along the top above the record button side. I appreciate the different setups you ran through - my studio desk looks 3 times as messy right now as I try to assemble a decent rig for the FX3 I just got. Ugh.
Another great video Chris! Enjoyed it very much. I build my A7Siii rig just like you did in your other video. Got the SmallHD 702 Touch on the handle as well. Need to get the monitor more balanced though as it is quite front heavy now. 😕
Definitely a lot of options when it comes tonthe cage. I'm debating on whether I should stick with the remote trigger wooden handle or try the top handle trigger.
I like how you used the monitor without the top handle as that is a lighter rig to run with. I may try that 🤔💯
This looks so good
thanks man!
I definitely think the half cage makes more sense overall, unless you really want the side handle. Right now I've just got a nato rail on the top and have a Nato top handle and Nato side handle on it when I'm not using the XLR top handle. But down the line I'll likely get the half cage for more mounting points.
Great info! Well told! Thanks!
Top presented... Amazing
thanks for the detailed video .. subscribed
Kondor Blue makes an extension handle for the xlr handle btw. that way you can have good sound as well. Just realized Smallrig has one as well
Excellent video.
Glad you liked it!
good explaining all tools
I never can use the right side handles. I’m always having to make adjustments when shooting. Looks good though.
Dude I just love your videos !!!
thanks fella!
@@chrisbrockhurst would you ever consider making a video talking about your "dream" lenses or what you would wish for Sony to release in terms of cameras and or lenses? (I hope this makes sense)
Lots of options here, I personally like the Half cage better!
What options do you recommend if using the half cage and the top handle the FX3 came with? I guess the side handle is all there is, assuming we don’t need follow focus?
Great video! I can't wait to switch to the FX3. Also just a heads up, the smallrig side handle is height adjustable.
thanks for this awesome video, but no one actually shows if these cages can help in vertical mounting
Think I'm gonna stick with the Titla cage, the versatility of that is great. I do like that side handle though, just wish they'd make one like the FX6 where you can change the angle with just holding it so it's seamless when you want to change position. Great video though, very informative
yeh, the title one is solid too
Thanks again bro
What is the part number for the Nato rail of the half cage? Glad the HDMI door doesn’t have to be removed. Like the focus wheel. Another great video. Take care.
all links and part numbers are in the description.
The hdmi clamp is not the 3279. It’s a different clamp. Anyone know which is the right part number ?
Thx for the info. I still dnt know which to buy from s3 and fx3:)
If you shoot any form of photo, get the A7SIII
What is already the brand of the sensor cap on your camera? I have a similar rig as yours but using A1. My monitor is attached on top of my handle (the one with shoe mount) instead of on top of the cage so I can also use a top handle at the same time. I don’t like having the monitor on top of a top handle as it gets too high.
thanks for the reminder to add it, link in the description now. Kondoor Blue
I just purchased the FX3 and the full cage. I thought the full cage was designed to be able to still use the hot shoe with the Sony Handle. Is that not correct?
Only the half cage allows you to do this
Great rig setups! I do a lot switching between handheld to gimbal stuff and have kind of steered away from using field monitors because I don't know if it'd be worth the extra setup time, but of course would like to use a bigger monitor lol. Would you have any rigging suggestions to quickly go back and forth?
NATO rail is your friend. I have my monitor mounted to the top handle and my top handle mounts to a nato rail along with my side handle. It's as simple as unplugging my hdmi + 2 simple hand screws and both slide off and I'm ready for the gimbal.
@@cosmic_drew Thanks for the insight! I'll look into that.
Can I use in fx 30 ?
I really like the half cage but its such a shame they didn't make the rod holder removable. Sony takes the EVF off making the top of the camera much smaller but then Smallrig put that massive rod holder on there with an even bigger thumb screw on top of it. It should have been an option that can be bolted to the left side of the cage IMO.
what monitor is that!! it looks so slim & lightweight. Can you provide a purchase link??
It’s pretty slim. Portkeys P6
Sorry, but on the small rig site it shows the Full cage for the FX3 with the Sony Handle connected to the camera like it is an option, but watching your video I cannot see how that would be possible. Looks possible but you are NOT able to use the screws on the Sony handle to keep it in place...? Is that correct.? Or is it impossible to use the full cage and the Sony handle for the microphone. ?
With the full cage it’s possible yes
@@chrisbrockhurst Really , thanks... but with out screwing it down right? Thank you
What I really hate about the half cage is the Rod Mount that sticks so far out the top and is in the way all the time. I would have preferred just a flat Cold Shoe instead.
And on the Full Cage, you can't use the top Handle both sucks. So I use my FX3 without any cage. Just mounted a Nato Rail to the Top Handle.
Each to their own, the tilta one is pretty solid too
@@UCSVfBIzA4U0rWIwaIkqpA7w can you specify how you mount Nato rail on the FX3 top handle?
Wish I have all of those arsenals also 😞🙍♂️😭
Useful video, as there are no other comparisons out there. Given you have both cages and lots of extra bits, I assume SmallRig gifted all of these items to you. As a result, this is not a review, but just a "view" of these items. Still useful but it would be good to have a totally impartial review. Do you use either of these cages in real-world scenarios? Or perhaps you cannot say?
Hey Phillip. I actually use both of these cages on a regular basis for all my shoots, I have two FX3's and always like to have them in something. I just like to showcase all the options that Smallrig has as they are much more budget friendly than some other options out there. That being said I do also have the Tilta cage for the FX3 and quite like that too, alot more expensive.
This tools used fx3 camera clips plz
Nice but Tilta's version being able to still use the top handle from Sony is pretty clever
I have tiltas too, it’s a great option
the only thing you didn't talk about is how and if the flip-out screen interacts with them (or if it gets blocked by them)
both cages work great with the flip out screens
Tq
More of fx3
on it
I hate the way RUclipsrs all have moved from the a7iii to the top of the line cameras and here I am with my a7iii😀
If you didn’t have the a7siii would you have got the fx3 on its own first
probably not, i still need a stills cam now and then and reel yon the evf.
Off topic but what kinda watch is that 👀
GA2100SKE-7A
This cage is the same for the A7s3?
different sizes
@@chrisbrockhurst thank you!
✌
If it wasn't for small rig and used market, I would be in debt right now.
2:32 OHhhh God no!!! Just got InvaderVie flashbacks!!!
LoL Literally the first time I found your video... never again! Sorry!
love tilta products but they're running on skeleton crew. critical missing component for cage kit. after several calls i finally got replacement. three week: wrong color. two weeks: gave up.
again, good product but those dudes will slow walk the hell out of ya if you encounter an issue. my experience, stay on top of them.
awesome product, unreliable brand.
