i’m sure someone mentioned it somewhere but the word shrek means like fear or scare basically in german and it’s important to me that everyone knows his name basically just means “ah! scary!”
Hi Hermes! fun fact: Lord Farquad’s appearance was (allegedly) based on Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney at the time and Jeffrey Katzenberg’s former boss. They had a lot of beef and this was supposedly Katzenberg’s way of getting back at Eisner.
Funny that I should see this video when the phrase “Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!”, which personally gets my vote for best line ever written, has been stuck in my head for the past two days.
hello hermes! shrek (2001) is such an important movie in so many ways. it revolutionized animation. it was put in the library of congress in 2020 for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". and it made smash mouth a household name. what more could you want?
Your spirited interpretation of the book's title reminds me of the way Freddie Mercury sings "FLASH!!" in Queen's Flash Gordon film theme song: "duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh SHREK!! AH AAAHHH!! Gonna scare every one of us!!"
Another great video, I could literally listen to Haley talk about any subject for hours. Excited for the follow up on the Shrek movie franchise. Will definitely be there for it and all your future videos Haley!
When you asked about the witch and why they didn’t add her into the movie, I think they did, just maybe as the fairy god mother in the second movie, seeing that her job in the second movie was to fortune tell and give people their “happily ever after”, which she technically did for Shrek in the book
HI HERMES!!! Absolutely LOVE that Shrek breathed fire in the book, wish he could've in the movie. ALSO, fantastic video as always, I always look forward to when they come out
If I had a nickel for a Katzenberg project that started off as the B-team punishment project at the studio and ended up as a cultural phenomenon, I'd only have two nickels but it's weird that its happened this many times.
Hi Hermes! Shrek (2001) is one of my all-time favorite movies. Thank you for letting us know that is was originally a book. I bought Shrek! as soon as I finished watching your video.
It's a bit crazy how we've gone from studios recasting and rewriting characters out of respect (when their actor's work is 80-90% done) to studios shamelessly putting deepfakes of late actors into their films for "hype." Also, hello, Hermes.
Hi Hermes! This is such a great video, not only did this make want to rewatch all of the Shrek movies but now I'm going to buy this book and watch the musical (I was aware of it but never saw it), can't wait for the future Shrek movie reviews ❤😁
First off, Hi Hermes! Furthermore, a very good and informative video, learned many things I didn't know and was reminded of some things I did know. Learning that the author loved the movie despite it being so different from the book is... pleasantly heartwarming. Don't forget to watch the Music competition bonus feature from the first movie xD
i normally bite my tongue for this, but because you're so articulate i hope you don't mind my pointing out that "casted" is grammatically incorrect! the past tense of "cast" is also "cast." :) thanks for the lovely content!
Hi Hermes!! ❤ This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips now. Haley’s excitement when talking about William’s love for the movie is so infectious. 10/10
Hi Hermes!!!!!!! I can't wait for you to deep dive into Shrek: The Franchise, and I really hope you bring justice for Shrek 4 because that movie means so much to me. Also as much as I love a good chunk of the music from the musical, I'm begging you to tear it to pieces for how much it took away from the characters themselves.
I read SO MANY William Steig books as a kid. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Doctor De Soto were the two standouts. Somehow though, never read Shrek!
I completely forgot about this book tbh. Reliving it 15 years later is a joyous experience. Almost as joyous as reliving Calvin and Hobbes. Also, hi Hermes!
@@emilyprins9143 oh yes! i love who id be!! it’s a quintessential act 1 closer, it’s fantastic! (idk why my brain read that as trio OF songs but nonetheless, i completely agree!!) when words fail is also just a genuinely good love song, like i have CRIED to that song before.
i feel like the first movie is kinda more like a sequel to this book. it's shrek after childhood, he's been disillusioned, he's found his swamp. he's getting his swamp back. idk if this makes any sense.
if you are purchasing a copy of this 30 year old children's book might i reccomend The Big Boy? i grew up with a big ol book of 'THE ONE AND ONLY SHREK! plus 5 other stories by WILLIAM STEIG' and honestly they are all delightful i love mr steig he wrote quite a bit of my childhood.
1) Hi Hermes! 2) Am I watching this AFTER 5 1/2 hour summary of the entire shrek franchise because the YT algorithm gods decided that I did NOT in fact consume enough Shrek content? Yes.
I can’t convey how much I appreciate that you always say the release year after the name of the movie every time you say the name of the movie

Uhh... no.
You can't say "allegedly" when "Welcome to Duloc" exists.
Funny that I should see this video when the phrase “Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!”, which personally gets my vote for best line ever written, has been stuck in my head for the past two days.
I tried to say that and summoned a demon
Why did that ending make me cry I'm so glad he got to see the movie and enjoyed it 😭

we need to resurrect william steig and show him shrek 2. we don’t need to tell him about the other ones. just shrek 2.
the "you can find me on twitter if that still exists" really aged well
Best infomercial ever. Your 1st Grade Teacher def comes out here in the best ways.

as a cis woman who got cast as big bad wolf in shrek the musical as a child, oooo i have THOUGHTS!!!
haley i love your energy and your videos. your thumping transition noise scares the shit out of me every time also
Truly absolutely the best origin explanation story of Shrek. Brb gotta buy the book.
a) hello hermes you beautiful beast
b) by god whipjack you've done it again. i really am tempted to buy the book for my niece and nephew now
I read SO MANY William Steig books as a kid. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Doctor De Soto were the two standouts. Somehow though, never read Shrek!
It's been a year since this video came out, so hi from the future, Hermes
Hi Hermes!
I just love the vibes of all your videos. They make me so happy and I'm constantly laughing💕
So cool that Haley got to do a cameo in Hermes' video!
I love your videos! the deep dive into the shrek lore made my day. a shame the crown didnt last longer lol
soso hyped for the shrek longvid
Hi Hermes!!!! Honestly love the video so much, love deep dives into random stuff so much
I completely forgot about this book tbh. Reliving it 15 years later is a joyous experience. Almost as joyous as reliving Calvin and Hobbes.
Also, hi Hermes!
That list of all the Shrek media tingled my brain. I'll wait dilligently, even if it takes some year to come out, as I'm doing with Arcane.
Shrek the Musical (2008) has one of the best trio songs ever written and I will die on this hill, so cool to see it’s origin! (Also HI HERMES)
I MUST know what the trio is immediately. how dare you leave me hanging like this

Didn’t know there was a book til this video came out so ty Haley for this very education video!! It did indeed deserve best opening line 😂

i can't believe i didn't say hi hermes the first time i watched this. disappointed in myself. hi hermes.
that would also imply that either shreks wife died (very sad) or that shrek is divorced (VERY funny).
Another great one, Haley. It has made me want to buy a children's book that is older than I am.
Hi Hermes! Love your videos and the podcast!
5 minutes in and I just ordered this to read to my nephew, campaign successful I guess
YES
Hi Hermes!
Yk i was waiting for another vid perfect timing

Hi Hermes!! And this was wonderful
Hello, Hermes! I am ordering this for my nieces immediately!

About to start the 5 hour video so of course I had to come here first 🤓
HI HEREMES I WAS GUSHING ABOUT HOW FUCKING ADORABLE THEY ARE BEFORE YOU SAID IT AHHH THEYRE SO SWEET OMG WHAT A GOOD KITTYYYYYY
Hi Hermes! I came here from your massive shrek a ganza to see what you thought of the book.
