    2:41:38 This is very minor, but I’d just like to point out that, if Shrek hadn’t rescued Fiona, Dragon would still be in the castle and thus could’ve easily burned Prince Charming to a crisp. Once again, she is doing the heavy lifting in this whole franchise.

      i feel like this... maybe could've been fixed by them establishing that rumpelstiltskin did hold up his end of the bargain and break her curse, but breaking the curse means she turns permanently into an ogre, not a human. so she'd turn into an ogre, not turn back, figure ok, no one's going to want to rescue an ogre, better rescue myself

      I would've agreed with you any day before today. But today, I found out that Fairy Godmother was being rounded up with the other fairytale creatures. So I say that with Charming's dependent relationship with his mother, he too would've been rounded up and then been in the crowds of background characters throughout the rest of the film.

    * complaining that people dont ask enough questions about Rumplestilskin's contracts
    * fairy godmothers dying
    * a villain whose plan is to destroy the happy endings to various fairy tale creatures
    * haley saying things like "im moving in a week" or "im getting married in 2 days"
    * haley falling in love with a very niche minor character

    One detail I really love in Shrek 1 is that for as much of a blabbermouth as Donkey is, he does actually keep quiet when Fiona has a serious secret she wants him to keep. They could have easily had him comedically tell Shrek by accident, but my man Donkey is a great pal.

  • @stuntfumbler
    @stuntfumbler Год назад +991

    Ok, so I agree that the miscommunication trope in childrens media sucks, but I think the conflict in shrek 1 is deeper and a little more nuanced. Fiona's self deprecating comments about how ugly ogres are IS a genuinely hurtful thing to say in front of shrek, even if he knows she just hates herself and not him. its revealing the prejudices she normally hides in front of shrek. he has every reason to not want to be around her after she made those comments about his race tbh. in the end fiona has to accept herself so she can learn that she was giving into (and parroting) hate speech, which is the point of the "but you are beautiful" moment

      Yeah, I feel like even as if he knew the context for why she said that, that was still a really legitimately horrible thing to say, because it still absolutely applies to Shrek, even though the movie kind of pretends that it doesn't when Shrek immediately drops the issue when Donkey says she wasn't talking about him

      No, he just lost any profit off of saving Fiona.

    • @xxgirl101xx
      @xxgirl101xx 12 дней назад +1

      I always assumed Dragon was on the payroll of the Fairy Godmother or otherwise under her control. Fiona wasn’t locked up by some evil sorcerer intent on keeping her there forever, she was locked up because it was deal between her parents and the Fairy Godmother. Plus I can’t imagine the Fairy Godmother sending her precious baby boy into ACTUAL danger. So either Dragon would’ve stood down for Charming or the Fairy Godmother had reason to believe Charming would’ve been alright (perhaps the chains were enchanted and would’ve restrained Dragon? Maybe Charming was given some magic to help him? I could definitely see the Fairy Godmother trapping and having Charming kill Dragon just for the sake of a traditional story, not to mention all the other folks who died trying to rescue Fiona).
      My assumption was that by signing the deal with Rumplestiltskin, the deal with the Fairy Godmother was broken AND Charming would’ve lost interest anyway because Fiona was no longer a princess. So Charming, notable scumbag, would’ve just left Fiona to rot.

    I’d like to mention how in Shrek Forever After, Pinocchio calmly corrects Rumpelstiltskin that he’s not a real boy and then kicks his ass out when he offers him a deal because he doesn’t care anymore about being a “real boy”, saying nobody needs his deals anymore implying everyone is happy with their lives.
    Pinocchio and the rest of the fairy tale creatures learnt to love themselves just like Shrek did, and that’s why the scene where in the AU Pinocchio is grovelling to Rumpelfor a wish is so sad to me because Shrek was never there for the world to learn from. 😔

    • @Dalton_Boardman2000
      @Dalton_Boardman2000 7 месяцев назад +16

      It's so cool that Shrek and Fiona's self made happily ever after had a domino effect on everyone. Those two proved that not everything has be perfectly clear cut and that what really matters is what you make of it. Pinocchio being content with living as a wooden boy is just one thing. The Big Bad Wolf is friends with the pigs and most of the villains in the third film change from a speech reminding them of it. Even without Shrek's direct influence we get stuff like Goldilocks being adopted by the three bears. Since we don't know the exact timeline maybe that happened after Shrek 1 and the bears just heard that others were subverting their stories so they might as well too. Pretty crazy how two ogres getting married can change the entire world for the better.

    I think Lillian actually DID know Harold was a frog originally. If you listen closely to them talking before Harold is threatened by the Fairy Godmother in their room. She talks about them being young and in love down by the lilypads. Also their bedroom has a lot of Princess and the Frog (the book) theming. I think at the end of Shrek 2, she wasn't saying that she could still love him as a frog, but more that she loved him no matter what form he was. And she loved him as a frog when they were young before he was turned into a human.

      It also applies a bit more nuance to his dislike of Shrek being an ogre in the beginning. While he IS being unreasonable, he did transform into a human and indeed seems to think it was necessary to change himself to be with his wife. Which is untrue, the Queen loves him regardless, but it mirrors Shrek trying to magically become human for Fiona because he society has convinced him he has to in order to make her happy. At the start, the king probably noticed the parallels and for all he’s going after Shrek for not being human, he’s also talking about how he believes HE couldn’t be good enough for his wife or the kingdom unless he was human.
      But in the end when Shrek remains an ogre, the king also goes back to being a frog. Neither of them needed to be someone they weren’t, and in fact the women they loved loved them either way.
      And then we can get into how the Fairy Godmother seems to be actively selling these narratives of needing to change yourself to be accepted and loved and the way the king specifically seems to have history with her, and how that narrative which was sold to the king was then imposed on Fiona who was locked up as part of ‘breaking her curse’ when really none of it was necessary, but by accepting themselves the Fairy Godmother and her magical ‘cures’ for problems that were never really problems becomes obsolete.

    Regarding the inconsistent dronkey numbers:
    Maybe (especially since the gestation period seems so short) the OG dronkey kids from Shrek 2 have already pretty much grown up, and the 5 dronkeys you see in Shrek 3 are already their second set of kids? 3 years is long enough for most animals to reach relative maturity, and I also think it would be really objectively funny for Shrek to be worried about having kids for the first time while Donkey's already got, like, 11 of them and is still totally chill at all times.

    1:04:35 Fun fact: hybrid species portmanteau names conventionally start with the sire's species first. That's why there's actually a distinction between a liger and tigon (in actual physical form too not just in name) even though both are half tiger half lion. So technically speaking, Donkey and Dragon's kids shouldn't be called dronkies or dragkies, they should be called either dongons or dogons.

    2:24:07 okay hi this is such a minor thing to comment on BUT for the stained glass window that breaks in the Shrek Musical, it looks like to me (theatre person) that the backdrop is 3 layers. One layer is the the wall surrounding the window (or maybe this layer doesn't exist and I'm making that one up), the second layer is the complete window which is segmented into different parts, and the third layer is the broken window! The full window layer is on different pullies that pull the segments apart, leading into the broken window but still infinitely assembleable for each night. I know this particular explanation makes no sense but I'm 90% sure that's how it works. Thank you for the awesome video!!

Basically, the premise was that The Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, and Gingy were kidnapped and locked in the dungeon of Farquad's castle. We end up in the dungeon with them and the magic mirror, and get the background from Shrek (2001) as well as be introduced to the ghost of Farquad who is going to torture the fairy tale creatures to find out where Fiona is, and then decides that we'll also be tortured in the auditorium which is when we're let into the actual 4-D movie.

There is no difference. I remember my mom telling me as a kid that when we say we are ugly because of a characteristic (our nose,.our weight, our skin color...) We are calling every other person with that characteristic ugly. Whether we mean to or not. Fiona was talking about Shrek that way. Even if she didn't realize it or mean to.

    An FYI for Shrek the Musical, I've seen it 3 times live (I was young and obsessed) and there is a variation of the show that happened (at least in the UK tour for whatever year I was seeing it) where they didn't have any children in the cast. Instead of the opening song having Shrek and his parents as well as young Fiona, it had adult Shrek and Fiona sticking their heads in and out of a story book and singing the song. I Know It's Today also replaced the young and teenage Fiona with puppets, but not puppets of Fiona, just generic princess puppets. Fiona was just a puppeteer for the one song and then it was never brought up again. She puppeteered a whole chorus of puppets and it was just forgotten about after that one song. The Dragon's song was also not Donkey Pot Pie in this version, and was another song called Forever as you mentioned which I personally think is worse than Donkey Pot Pie, so there is another version of the show that is probably floating around out there on the internet somewhere.

    1:14:46 I personally think that after the fairy God mother died, the only thing that was properly left for him to inherit was the potion factory, since while she was wealthy, the majority of her power and control came from her reputation, and interpersonal connections with important figures, those connections being presumably in the same vein as her connection to Prince Harold being that she was able to keep them under pressure, and served as their providers, as she was the one keeping them in high status. Since those connections were related to her, and were specifically between her and the people she had connections to, after she died, those secrets died with her. Prince charming is also pretty incompetent, and has no importance on his own since he was more of a bargaining chip than anything, and was being used for the sake of getting closer to the throne. He doesn't know Jack shit about how to use magic or operate it, and while he does learn a bit more throughout shrek three, he mainly gets others to use it for him. With this and the fact that he didn't manage jack shit, and was just sucking up to his mother his whole life, I think that when he got the potion factory, he sucked at managing the place, and with the damages caused to both the stock, and machinery of the place, not to mention the reimbued sense of worker rights put in the receptionist, I fully feel that three years was way more than enough for the potion industry he inherited to crumble away in his hands.

    If he still decided to try to save her, we also see in shrek 2 that Fiona simply doesn't like Charming, and i'm willing to bet she still wouldnt if he was the one to save her.

  • @annabarnes5221
    @annabarnes5221 Год назад +60

    1) I guess you could chalk Prince Charming not coming to rescue Fiona in Shrek 4 down to him finding out that not only that Harold and Lillian got Thanosed but that they signed the kingdom away so if he went through with rescuing Fiona, he wouldn't even get a kingdom out of it. He and the Fairy Godmother probably got killed trying to scam Rumpelstiltskin.
    2) If we never see the 6th Dronkey again, did Donkey and Dragon loose a child in the 3 years between Shreks 2 and 3? Donkey using his trademark humor to mask the tragedy and distract people and keep them happy? What if it happed in one of the convoluted chaos sequences
    3) What is important to note is that the Zombies we see in the Thriller Video is that we see Zombies of characters did not die along with characters who did. Therefore Mungo is fine, it was all Shrek's dream.
    4) I'm choosing to believe The Adventures of Puss In Boots is a fictional story which Puss is telling to Shrek and Donkey's kids. Probably because a lot of the actual stories about him are about him stealing or are to violent or just otherwise, not very PG. Hey remember when Puss was introduced as an assassin and an Ogre killer? Imagine telling that to Felicia, Fergus and Farkel.

    I like how there are bandaids on different fingers during this. What were you doing, Haley? Also, "I'm a Believer" was written by Mike Nesmith and performed by The Monkees! Smashmouth just covered it later. Also, THANK YOU tor reviewing all of this... stuff

    I think charming didn't rescue fiona cause
    1. She wasnt a princess anymore so why would he bother
    2. Dragon was there this time in shrek 2 dragon was gone
    But i will say i dont understand why fiona is still cursed cause wasnt the deal with fionas parents to lift her curse it seemed like they just signed a contract to lose everything and literally gain nothing

    I actually think the idea that Fionna was at her Absolute Limit™ like 3 days before she was finally going to be rescued after 23 YEARS is really funny. Although I guess it's possible that word got back to her about her PARENTS DISSOLVING and her kingdom being given to Rumplestiltskin...so maybe that's why she left the tower?

    I HAVE ANSWERS ABT DONKEY AND DRAGON'S KIDS! Their names are established in the Nintendo DS game Shrek: Ogres and Dronkeys (2007) which was basically a Nintendogs clone but with babysitting and Shrek. I had it as a kid and it was pretty unmemorable but when you mentioned Parfait I had a that's so raven vision remembering this stupid game so yeah

    Listening to the aopib recap felt like the way I feel explaining an overly complicated DND session to my partner. Genuinely amazing video, I cannot believe I watched 5 and a half hours in one sitting without using 2x times speed. It was just genuinely that engaging

    Shrek 2 (2004)'s "Holding Out For A Hero" scene is inarguably a top 10 scene in film. Foot to the floor, straight fucking gas beginning to end. Unmatched

    RUclips has been recommending me this video for over a month and I kept not watching it even though it's exactly the type of thing I'd watch.
    I looked up "once upon a time retrospective" on RUclips 2 days ago and your video on it was the first to pop up. Imagine my surprise when you mentioned the 44 hours of Shrek video.
    I regret not trusting youtubes recommendation from the start. This was great.
    Loved every second of it except that part at the beginning when you said Donkey was commenting and complementing Shreks swamp, then showed Donkey saying "i like that boulder, that's a nice boulder" because that is not at all the order that happened in. I thought about that the entire 2 days it took me to watch this.
    Other than that, 10/10.

    I feel personally attacked by the opening line on Far, Far, Away Idol. I definitely spent way too much time watching it. 😭

    The portion with Christmas makes sense when one considers that the fairy godmother talked about the king having been in the crusades like Haley said…

      Yup. And considering we see Robin Hood in the first film we can actually use the chronology of those stories to state that the film take place some time between 1190-1194 A.D
      Though Christmas wasn't like the modern American amalgamation of traditions at that time. So it is still a bit off
