@8:39 I am so sorry you heard that stuff. People can be awful to each other. My dad was from Appalachia and he often heard the phrase “don’t get above your raisin’s” meaning don’t get prideful (or really, don’t make people who never made it out feel shame bc you did something w yourself and they are envious).
@ specifically when they say something like “you sound white”. I think that’s especially tough bc it just obliterates an entire group identity and puts the other on an undeserved pedestal. It’s awful programming and keeps people dependent on each other for group identity, no matter the cost. (The cost is your individual identity and uniqueness, which is every human being’s right to discover and shape for themselves.)
That’s the kind of stuff that keeps people primal and in the dark ages. It’s meant to stop any attempts at self actualization dead in its tracks. And if there is anything evil in this world, I think that’s it: sabotaging people from “Bettering themselves” (aka making the most of their one precious life to live) if they have a desire and will to do so.
I dropped out of college twice, got a worthless 2yr Applied Science degree, and finally got a Journeyman Inside Wireman's license. The JIW license bought me low 6-figure wages, ironically. Don't feel bad about your diction, people I work with in the electrical trade look at me as strange based upon my Renaissance Man-levels of general knowledge I've gathered in my short, mostly pointless pursuit of cash and purpose.
My dad taught me that any practical knowledge of a subject catches the attention of your "superiors". I've made friendships with several foremen at the shop I'm working for just because of my basic knowledge of military history, weaponry, fishing, hunting, marksmanship, novice gunsmithing, ammo reloading, cooking, and my scale modeling hobby.
Same for us Black guys who have similar backgrounds......Youre not alone....We deal with the same crab in the bucket mentalitiy from our "brothers"....We educated poor need to create a new space for ourselves not based soley on race.
It's very upsetting. I always question, what's the point in graduation ceremonies. The degree literally means nothing unless you are a doctor or going into law.
Workers have never liked work but the difference was they used to have community. A grueling job in a factory was done surrounded by your fellow neighbors and FRIENDS. There was comradery, stability, and relationships extended outside of work too. Today it's a cliche, but it did used to be that your coworkers were like family. The saddest thing now is that everyone is a stranger. The ties that used to bind us together have all been severed. The only thing giving me hope is watching people slowly wake up to and push back against this sick society. The inevitable revolution will bring us together again.
@ yeah. I think it seems like few understand and even fewer have a plan of action for it. So many systemic issues that education isn’t enough to solve. Education only allows for a series of side stepping a few waves of the “raid” that never ends. These systemic issues have been know, but have not been addressed for decades. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable” -RFK

I think people get uncomfortable when they don't know how to pigeonhole a person. But this was very relatable. I'm half white and half hispanic. I read a lot so I sound educated, but I'm not.
