Thank you. Great video that makes it very easy to understand the way to look at batteries and why you should or shouldn’t upgrade.
Thank you again
Great Video, Todd! I'm just getting involved in the RV world and always wondered about choices and stats of batteries. I'm a visual and hands on learner...the chart was perfect!
I love this channel I have learned so much.
Thanks for the great information!!!
Thanks Todd
Geeze! I love this channel!!
WOW that was some awesome info.
Thanks for the advice! Great advice! I’m going lithium!!
I love love love our lithium batteries. Yes all true deep draw , faster recharge.
I have had Good luck with AGM’s!
What about the charger converter going from lead acid batteries to Lithium in the RV. This will need to be updated. And charging the lithium from the 7 pin plug from the tow vehicle will put a strain on the alternator. My point is going to lithium in an RV that has been using lead acid has additional expenses not just the cost of the battery. I have a new trailer with two 12v lead acid. My next set of batteries will either be 12 volt AGM or 2 6volt batteries. You also have to consider the type of camping you do. We boondock but not for long periods of time. If your full timing or boondocking for long periods the lithium may be your option. I'd rather spend the money of a small generator that will run the AC and microwave and charge the batteries when boondocking. My opinion. Your videos are very instructional and I think I watched most of them. Keep them coming. Thanks.
Thanks god bless
thank you
Love the videos.
Question: I have a Somerset E3. If I wanted to get a Lithium Battery at some point, would I have to change out the conveter?
Or would the one I have so the job?
You have way to much fun making the videos. Yes I think they are good /informative and glad I don't have to do them.😁😁
Glad you like them!
The great news is that Li batteries are coming down in price. SOK brand Li's are half the price of BB's. Will Prowse dissected one and was very impressed with it. 200 AH for right at $1K. A trouble light with a 60 watt bulb will keep your Li's in the correct temp range in the winter.
Thanks for all the videos. I had a question about the charge cycles and when you have your lithium battery hooked up to your RV that has solar panels that charge them up during the day. We don't use but maybe 20% of our battery at night. Then the solar charges it back up to 100%. Does that negatively affect our battery in any way or its life cycles?
Thanks again.
That's a very minor recharge cycle.....will not hurt in any way. If you have Battleborns even at 10,000 cycles your Li battery will still be capable of a 80% capacity. You made a great choice with Li batteries :)
Can you mix and match batteries? For example replace two lead acid with lithium one earthen replace the other two the following year?
My lead acid batteries are in front of my engine. I can see them in the grill of my class A. I live in Florida but try to chase 75° F in the summer by going north. Can I replace my two 225 AH lead acid batteries with A 250 AH lithium Ion battery then add a second battery later? Do I need to change anything else like the converter or inverter. I use shore power or a portable generator and my alternator to charge my batteries.
Lithium is an even better option 2 years later. Lead has gone up, lithium has gone down in prices.
My question is do y ou risk going Lithium batteries with all the reported battery fires in the last few months?? My neighbor's class C went to the frame after his house batteries ignited for some unknown reason, in front of his home. Ill stick with AGM
can i run 6 is series ?
Todd when installing a Lithium battery to replace the lead acid battery the charger change out in the rigs distribution center is easy but is anything needed to be done with your trucks 7 way pin? I'm not really looking to install a dc to dc charger at all nor do I really have the need for that as we 80% of the time have electric hookup. The extra amp hours of the lithium would just be nice for occasional overnight stays and boon-docking weekends. Thanks!
Let's ask Todd.
Is the original charging system compatible with Lithium Batteries?. Can you simply change lead acid to Lithium Batteries and call it good?
We purchased 170 amp hour from Big Battery which is almost as good as having to 100 amp hours. Love to have the battery has no exposed cables to short out and has its own on off switch built in the battery as well as a 300 amp protector built in
I do like big battery. It’s different working with Anderson connectors but if you have wall space for bus bars then they are the best setup!
Thanks for all the tips. I was hoping this video would prove or disprove if two 6 volt batteries wired in series is better than two 12 volt batteries wired in parallel?
You achieve the same voltage but capacity of amp hours may be different.
You can achieve about 3× the reserve capacity from 2 6volt Gc batteries as you have from 2 12volt batteries.
I know with Lithium batteries for Hobby grade RC models they require a specific charger. Do 12 volt for RVs need to have a new charger installed?
Nevermind. I watched your Q & A video and it answered my question. Thank you.
Do you need a different converter with lithium batteries? I have 1997 coachman royal leprechaun. Right now have agm battery but thinking going lithium to lighten the load
Yes. with the age of your RV you will need to upgrade your converter. It depends on what type of Converter/charger you have. it may be an easy swap.
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy 1st i got to locate the converter/charger.
If you add on to your Lithium batteries don't you have to keep the same AH or if you have 100 AH can you add a 250 AH??
do your batteries ah need to match.
So can you explain
Amp hours and how to figure out how much you need to run for a day on LI batteries?
We cover that at around the 2:30 mark on this video. If you’re looking to install this cover most of the topics. ruclips.net/video/l_LvYL14th0/видео.html
Here’s a deep discussion on the topics ruclips.net/video/LI0gtxQGjks/видео.html
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy Thanks! I'll have to watch the in depth one because apparently the short version went over my head like an F16.
I keep my two year old flooded batteries charged and they have never got below 70% and only a few times and never to 50%. Since a cycle is down to 50% , does this mean they don't have any or only a couple of cycles?
So it’s hard to give an exact as they will also put a time limit. We can say they are very lightly used and presume they will go a few years longer possibly when they are constantly connected to a charger
You have to have a different charger for each different kind of battery too, amiright?👍🏼☮️
Most new smart inverter/converter can be programmed for the different battery specifications. If you’re unable to program your converter, you’ll need to make sure you’re buying the right one for the batteries you’re using.
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy Will your 7 pin trailer plug charge Lithium batteries while traveling. If yes, is there any danger to your alternator while doing this?
Captain Mike Massey wonderful question.
Lithium batteries like a constant voltage charge and an alternator does not provide constant voltage.
Secondly alternators work until there is pushback voltage and a lithium battery can far exceed the charge rates of alternators.
In order to solve both concerns, there needs to be a dc to dc converter to offer proper charge profiles from the alternator and protection to the alternator.
Great tech clips… to bad your training site is so far away… thanks for your teaching skills and humor!
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy seems like good info to mention in the video.
Interesting. You’re referring to lithium ion batteries but now we have lithium iron phosphate which are even better but probably more expensive. I noticed that in the power station area most batteries are lithium ion but some lithium iron are showing up. It’s not clear what the holdup is in battery development.
To do? actually most modern lead-acid cells are sealed.
Actually the only maintenance free lead acid Wet Cell batteries on the market still today are cheap garbage that have been around since forever.
I managed and sold batteries for Interstate Batteries and Batteries Plus ➕ and never sold a sealed Dc battery.
I now am employed at O'Reilly Auto Parts and none of our DC batteries are maintenance free either.
Lithium does like below 40? Or freezing?
You need to look at the mfgr of the battery. Each brand sets the low temp cut off differently but right around freezing is too cold to charge.
I'll take some lithium!
You and me both!
You forgot about charging them, can’t use the same type of charger for lithium batterys
That's correct, most of them require a different charger. We did cover that in another tech tip. Thanks for your comment!
Love the info. HATE the music. PLEASE either omit it, or at least lower the volume. Hard to listen to with the music. Thanks.
