Off the top of my head I'd say 1. RNDZL 2. Sofa Pt. 2 3. Son of Mr. Green Genes 4. Regyptian Strut 5. Peaches En Regalia 6. Holiday in Berlin (full blown) 7. Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue 8. Inca Roads 9. The Adventures of Gregory Peccary 10. Envelopes (LSO version) All of these songs are the best ever, to anyone reading this please go check out any you haven't listened to already!
I'm still 16 and only listened to his discography until "shut up and play yer guitar", but I'm gonna end all of it soon. Even so, I think its impossible to make a top 10 definitive list, imagine to you. You list probably had already changed in one year. My top 10 of today is: 1-The little house I used to live in 2-Holyday in berlim, full blown (it makes me cry) 3-Peaches in regalia 4-Invocation and ritual dance of the young pumpkin 5-Inca roads 6-Son of mr green genes 7-Muffin man 8-Dog breath variations 9-Black napkins 10-Take your clothes off when you dance (I could listen to it all day long) Greetings from brazil 🇧🇷👍
Excellent list...can’t say I wouldn’t add most of those to mine if I did it again in a year, or even a month. A definitive list is silly and impossible which makes it fun. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your Zappa journey. Unlike no other....
Andy IS in 4/4! Heavily syncopated, but in 4... Alright, now that I've flexed, FANTASTIC video. A really great list, some very interesting choices. Very proud that you included Greggery Peccary. That would probably be my number one. 10. RDNZL 9. Echidna's Arf (Of You)/ Don't You Ever Wash That Thing 8. Little House I Used to Live In 7. Let's Move to Cleveland 6. Peaches En Regalia 5. Oh No 4. Dog Breath Variations 3. Billy the Mountain 2. Inca Roads 1. The Adventures of Greggery Peccary Sheesh I could go on to do an easy 50. Frank is one of the hardest people to make a list like this for.
Sticking purely with songs (tracks with somewhat melodic vocals in), I'm with you on Gregary Peccary, Ship Arriving Too Late and Inca Roads (though rather boringly I'd have placed Inca at number 1), but I wouldn't have considered Holiday and Peaches songs (as beautiful as they are). I'd also have to add St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast, Cheepnis, Any Kind Of Pain, The Blue Light, Broken Hearts (sorry, it's awesome), Carolina Hardcore Ecstacy and Zombie Woof.
If I didn’t think of St. Alphonso’s as being so intrinsically a part of the whole DETYS suite, I would have included it. That :40 instrumental section at the end of the tune is one of my all time favorite FZ pieces of music.
...I would also HAVE to Include Black Napkins (as well as Pink Napkins) in this list... The Zoot Allures studio version, as well as the Many Live Versions - played by many different FZ lineups... Absolutely beautiful piece of music - every time it was played..... I would also include (in no particular order- just to put in my 2 cents)... Sofa (all #'s), Brown Shoes Don't Make It, Call Any Veg, Baby Snakes, City of Tiny Lights, Village of the Sun, Penguin in Bondage, Blessed Relief - which May be my #1 - or at least in my top 5... Thanks!
1. Holiday in Berlin (Burnt Weeny Sandwich), 2. Uncle Meat 3. Dog Breath Variations 4. Nine types of industrial pollution 5. Invocation and Ritual Dance of a young pumpkin 6. Little House I used to live in 7. Waka Jawaka 8. Sinister Footwear (3rd movement) 9. Inca Roads 10. Who are the brain police? Too damned hard to be limited to only 10!
10) Flakes 9) Holiday in Berlin full blown 8) Call Any Vegetables 7) City of Tiny Lights 6) Andy 5) Sofa #2 4) Inca Roads 3) Help II'm a Rock 2) Pigmy Twilight 1) More Trouble C'mon Everyday "Read " em and Weep!" 😅
OK, i bite, but within these constraints: no instrumentals, no "radio dramas" (like Greggery Peccary, which'd top my list probably), no particular order, no provided reasons: Cucamonga, One Shot Deal, It Can't Happen Here, Brown Moses, Village Of The Sun, Wild Love, Memories Of El Monte, Drowning Witch, (& occupying 2 places because it's something of a sequence) the choral passages of The Pleated Gazelle (though if you'd accept that as one, i'd add the vocal version of Strictly Genteel)
Great input and output here/hear. I have most all of these recordings in my regular rotation as well. Unfortunately I am unable to squeeze 10 tunes out for a list as this Zappa phenom has a life of its own and it squirms and oozes and erects itself into a solid form and stands before me. I will only commit to say that I am also a fan of Rat Tomago. Oh well alrighty then as of right now and in no order and practically off the cuff: One Shot Deal, Blessed Relief, Billy the Mountain (Playground Psychotics version because I can’t live without the clarinet intro) Inca roads, Holiday in Berlin (Full blown but of course) Brown Shoes don’t make it, Debra Kadabra (Witch goddess of Lancashire Blvd), Toad o Line, Lucille Has messed my Mind Up and Village of the Sun. Probably because these were listened to most recently. I usually listen to entire sides, but occasionally single tracks as the illness dictates. It now tells me I need a snack and a nap. Hello from Austin.
I comfortably know that I have listened to Absolutely Free WAY MORE than any.....all?....Flo ‘n’ Eddie album. However....that songs list has already been amended to add Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance so yeah, maybe it needs to be re-updated.
I’m not going to attempt a list. Your list is good, but I find it hard to believe that One Size Fits All didn’t make your top ten when three of its songs were in your top 5. Can’t Afford No Shoes isn’t that bad. Cmon.
I feel compelled to name 11-20 top songs. Ten is just too damn few! 11. King Kong (on make a jazz noise here) 12. Billie the Mountain 13. Florentine Pogen 14. Trouble coming every day (from Freak out) 15. Greggary Peccary 16. Music for guitar and low budget orchestra 17. Pound for a brown 18. Andy 19. San Bernardino 20. Oh No.
I feel your pain. I considered doing a top 20 list but felt masochistic at the time. If I were do the list again today, it would probably be different...maybe.
Sorry, just don't get Greggary Peccary, but isn't it the great thing about Frank that there's so much variety. My top 10 at the moment (could change tomorrow) is 1) Dog Breath Variations 2) Willie the pimp 3) Montana 4) Pygmy Twylyte 5) The Orange County Lumber Truck 6) Uncle Meat main theme 7) Echidnas Arf (of you) 8) Son of Mr Green Genes 9) Florentine Pogen 10) Zomby Woof (ycdtosa 1 version)

Studio Tan is his crowning 70s studio achievement IMO
I believe the "Petrushka Quote", is actually at about 1 : 50 of Status Back Baby.... Very good observation!!!

Sheesh I could go on to do an easy 50. Frank is one of the hardest people to make a list like this for.
Excellent list.....and yes, it is hard discerning between the different levels and types of greatness in FZ’s catalog.
Fun fact: the melody of Status Back Baby is partially nicked from I’ve Found a Million Dollar Baby.
The "Petrushka quote" is at about 1 : 50 of the tune "Status Back Baby"... Very good observation!!

@@theopinionatedhippie470 Yeah, to be fair, I should have picked the whole suite.

The speak-singing’s technical term is Sprechstimme (borrowed from Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire)
Or Sprechgesang
Speak to meee…. Woah nooo…
1. Holiday in Berlin (Burnt Weeny Sandwich), 2. Uncle Meat 3. Dog Breath Variations 4. Nine types of industrial pollution 5. Invocation and Ritual Dance of a young pumpkin 6. Nice list. And yes, it is way too hard to narrow the list down to 10. Agreed!
Hey Shaggy, I love your list. I'm like you I suspect, totally obsessed by FZ. Thanks for your youtube channel!
RDNZL from Läther is my favourite... well today, anyway.
One of my favorites is Sexual harasment in the workplace, despite the stupid title.
Status Back Baby is a big favorite. It is an adaptation of I Found a Million Dollar Baby (In a Five and Ten Cent Store).
10) Flakes 9) Holiday in Berlin full blown 8) Call Any Vegetables 7) City of Tiny Lights 6) Andy 5) Sofa #2 4) Inca Roads
3) Help II'm a Rock 2) Pigmy Twilight 1) More Trouble C'mon Everyday "Read " em and Weep!" 😅

I love Hotplate Heaven At The Green Hotel but my fav is San Berdino.

Thanks for the comment. Very much appreciated. And thanks for giving in and sharing your Top Ten…..and greetings from down I35!
For some kind of ooo ooo ooo ah ah - ah ooo ooo oooooo ahhh ooo wahhhh... - ritual sacrifice!
Shaggy there’s no way you’ve listened to Status Back Baby more than What Will This Evening… I demand a retraction 😂 IF THINGS GO ALRIGHT 🎶

Help I’m a Rock is not really much of a song per se. it’s more like a vamp with a rap on top.
