A tranquil walk from Portreath to Illogan, Cornwall

  • Join us as we explore Portreath and Illogan. Starting from the village of Portreath, a former mining port where coal was brought from Wales and tin and copper ore was exported for smelting. The village is the beginning of the Coast to Coast cycle Trail to Devoran, a former railway line through some of the most historic areas of Cornish Mining Heritage.
    The walk winds through Illogan woods, tranquil and unspoilt before reaching Illogan. The church is most interesting and after a little explore we cross open farmland to Bridge, picking up the tramroad back to Portreath.

    Poker, Poker, Black Jack, Black Jack, or a real bridge is what your talking about. LOL. Andrew was on a roll that day with all the witty comebacks. Another really nice walk and information.

    Was born in Portreath, but grew up in St Agnes. There is a cave on Portreath beach with contains a pool scoupped out of a shelf, which is known as Lady Bassett's bath. My grandparents are buried in Illogan churchyard

      Ooooo! Is the cave on left as you look out to sea? Near to Smugglers Cottage, by any chance? Sarah :)

      It's certainly on the left as you look out to sea bit haven't been to Portreath in over 50 years so can't remember buildings

    Had our first Cornish holiday, 45 years ago, in Portreath. Stayed in a bungalow half way up Lighthouse hill. Always like to visit Portreath when we are in Cornwall but sadly not this year as our holiday has been cancelled. Stay safe.

    • @CornishWalkingTrails
      @CornishWalkingTrails  4 года назад

      Lighthouse Hill is quite different these days, not sure if you have returned. Some of the old bungalows have gone, even the old victorian mansion, to be replaced with the modern glass boxes. I think I have mixed feelings about it really. Whilst they are lovely, there is something of a uniformity about it, loss of character maybe! Tourists love renting them though! Sarah :)

      It felt like they were louder than usual, I particularly noticed them when I was editing. Mind you, it's a very quiet woodland, not many people so perhaps they are very happy birds! Sarah :)

    Lovely walk, thanks very much. I love the Portreath, Illogan, Tehidy area, and it's away from the usual tourist spots. At one point they were talking about opening up the incline as part of the tramway trails around there which would be fantastic, but I don't know if that will ever go ahead.

      That interesting! They probably ran out of funding as there is no hint of that now. There are probably properties in the way of that now! Sarah :)

    Such a lovely walk 😊 It was really nice to meet you two on our way from St. Agnes to Portreath in 2018 (and we loved our stay at Cliff House). Videos like this give me a broader knowledge of the places I've been. Walking the South West Coast Path in a few days at the time dosn't give much extra opportunity to explore the places we stay. So this is really splendid. Thank you 👍😁❤

    Aww, Demelza's territory! Nice to see where she hailed from! And to hear all the Poldark names for real...Tehidy, the Bassetts etc. Catching up again with Poldark at mo...watching the series over again with the family & reading the books. Such lovely stories, brought to life in a lot of your vids! I see Andrew was on form that day with the jokes!! Also caught up with the sound of your last vid on your artwork of St. Michael's Mount Sarah....had to watch it in silent mode last time! You have a very artistic streak...the painting & stitching were wonderful. Fingers crossed for October when we can see it for ourselves again.......x J x
