    IMPORTANT NOTE - The throttle is located before the supercharger, unlike how it is drawn in the video. This doesn't really change much, you will have pre-filled 8 psi of boost past the supercharger, but the drawn location of the throttle is incorrect. You can clearly see the throttle comes first at 1:37 in the video. Apologies for any confusion, hope everyone's having a wonderful day!
    From The 2018 Dodge Demon Press Kit:
    "TransBrake is a production car first. Every Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is equipped with the standard TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission. Already a proven and robust gearbox used with the HEMI Hellcat V-8, the transmission gets some significant changes for duty in the Challenger SRT Demon.
    Internal changes include an upgraded torque converter that delivers an 18 percent increase in torque multiplication. Also, the stall speed is increased 11 percent and the lockup speed is increased.
    The Challenger SRT Demon is the first-ever, factory-production car with TransBrake, which locks the transmission output shaft to hold the car in place before a standing start. This lets the driver increase engine speed up to 2,350 rpm without overpowering the brakes, resulting in quicker power delivery and up to 15 percent more torque at launch.
    Driver-oriented step-by-step instructions are displayed on the instrument cluster to guide the driver through the staging process and help them keep their focus on the Christmas Tree.
    The TransBrake helps to improve driver reaction time and launch consistency by using the steering wheel paddle shifters as a launch trigger - a paddle launch improves reaction time by 30 percent compared with a foot-brake launch. In addition, the system enables delivery of initial torque to the flywheel as soon as 20 milliseconds after launch.
    TransBrake works in conjunction with another SRT Demon first-ever factory-production car feature, Torque Reserve, to deliver increased levels of power and torque at launch.
    Torque Reserve becomes active once engine speed passes 950 rpm. It does two things:
    1. Closes the bypass valve, “prefilling” the supercharger with boost
    2. Manages fuel flow to cylinders and manages spark advance or retard to balance engine rpm and torque
    With TransBrake and Torque Reserve active, the SRT Demon has more than 8 psi of boost at launch and up to 120 percent more engine torque than without Torque Reserve. TransBrake also preloads the driveline with torque, leading to full engine torque delivery at the rear wheels 150 milliseconds after the shift paddle is released. That results in faster acceleration at launch, faster 60-foot times and an improvement of more than a tenth of a second in quarter-mile times, which can be an entire car length."

      Transbrake explained from 2:46. It's not really any different than any other automatic transmission, just engages two gears at the same time.

      About the transbrake... Is the statement "pre-loads the drive line" (at 05:27) not entirely correct as engaging 2 gears simultaneously locks up everything from the transmission forward - leaving the drive shaft, differential, and half-shafts (basically 50% of the drive line) unaffected?

    So does it make sense to add force induction on an engine with ITBs? Does it work, is it more efficient for power increase or no?

    • @gavinfletcher7951
      @gavinfletcher7951 7 лет назад

      Leslie H. I do not know as much as EE but I think it's very very hard/ impossible to do forced induction with independent throttle bodys. I may be wrong but I don't think you can have open throttle bodies on each cylinder and put boost into them. Just trying to help awnser your question!:)

    • @leslie7872
      @leslie7872 7 лет назад +1

      Then what about a 4A-GE 20V? In some variations some people boost them with ITB.

    • @kinslayergaming3159
      @kinslayergaming3159 7 лет назад

      theog gus you can with ITBs' e.g GTR R34 has a RB26DETT with 6 itbs for forced induction on ITBs' you need to link them with a common manifold

    • @kinslayergaming3159
      @kinslayergaming3159 7 лет назад

      Leslie H. Well prime examples of forced induction cars with ITBs' are the Nissan Skyline GTR (R34) which has a 6 cylinder twin turbo setup from factory and those cars make upwards of 1000hp when built correctly

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  7 лет назад +31

      Because it can get all of the weight onto the rear wheels, AWD would actually slow it down, as it would mean more power loss and less torque reaching the ground. If it could not lift the front axle, AWD would benefit it, or if it had significantly more power AWD could help further down the drag strip to gain speed.

    Torque Reserve seems like an incredibly misleading name to wow people who don't understand physics. This made me think of a giant torsion spring connected to the driveshaft, not fast-idle and constant intake boost. A reserve of torque is nonsensical. You can store energy (potential), but not torque. Only a tiny amount of energy (negligible) will be stored in the 8psi compressed air between the supercharger and the intake.

    • @DeSousausmc
      @DeSousausmc 7 лет назад +2

      Considering the boost will be virtually instantaneously converted to a significant amount of torque at launch I would say it's far from misleading and instead just simplified for the sake of those who don't want to read a physics textbook when they're car shopping. "Object X stores Y and when the light turns green you get more torque" Torque Reserve

    • @AllianaCordova
      @AllianaCordova 7 лет назад +10

      Yathu prem Two different gear ratios. This causes the output gearing to be for two different shaft speeds and thus locks them up because it can't go two different rates of rotation at once.

    • @gjhwrestler75
      @gjhwrestler75 7 лет назад +3

      He states the they lock "2nd" gear, but that's not exactly the case. These transmissions have 5 clutch pack(A, B, C, D, and E), and they are engaged and disengaged in certain combinations that make all 8 output gear ratios. The way they lock the transmission is by engaging all the necessary clutch packs for 1st gear, and engage one more that prevents output. I'm not sure off the top of my head which clutches are involved in all this on a Demon, but they combine in a way that locks the sun, planets, and ring gear of a planetary gear set, which prevents output from that gear set, and ultimately there is no output from the transmission.

    Always been a MOPAR fan . . . no matter what some people say. Though I love Porsche, I am hugely impressed at how Dodge finally, finally, FINALLY, built a musclecar (my favorite bodied musclecar) that smashes on a super quick 911 turbo S - especially while weighing 2 tons!!! So then, I have to ask, what the hell is Corvette's problem? Why is it that Corvette always gets smashed on by Porsche in the 1/4 mile? The Demon isn't a mid-engined car or anything and it's way heavier than a corvette, yet it can still beat a Porsche - can anyone explain?

    So you have to control the throttle input with the transbrake on? I thought it was full throttle and the computers controlling the RPM.
    And also, can you use the transbrake in second gear? I remmember that Motor Trend said that the automatic Hellcat is faster from 0-60 launching it from second gear, and I have the doubt, can the Demon do a faster 0-60 launching it from second gear?

    1st question - Does the torque reserve only available for the dodge challengers with superchargers and not the dodge challenger scat pack 1320 even though that has a trans brake?
    2nd question - What is difference between boot brake and trans brake on the dodge challenger? I understand the controls as in trans brake uses paddles vs foot brake but as in what is the benefit. Does foot brake do the same thing as trans brake as put torque to the wheels right before launch?

    I don't think the stall of the torque converter is high enough to have a really good launch and for the trans brake to be effective. Should be upwards of 3500-4000 rpm although it would be harder on every component and would probably need a wheelie bar to control the launch.

    Like a stall kit. Makes an automatic behave more like a manual for launching. Still prefer manual. Do pretty much the same thing. Clutch in rev to about 2k rpm give or take, depends on your tires traction and how powerful the engine is. Experiment a lil. You want to push the envelope of your tires breaking traction. Tires just chirping a lol is perfect. So get the sweet spot rpm then pop clutch and push gas.

    Chevy could have easily come out with the same configuration. It's a nice trick. But doesn't GM a camaro that has a trans am conversion that put off 840 HP on pump gas.

      Correct - but it has 1000 horsepower this year, on the Super Duty 455 version. The COPO camero will out-run a demon, but the demon remains street legal while that camaro is not. The T/A could give the demon a good run but probably needs the same or similar tires, and has a 500+ lb weight advantage.

    EE, thank you very much for all your videos and tutorials. My question, Which one is better for fast launch, using electric motor to move the wheels or using trnas-brake with torque reserve?.... cause I drive a V6 hybrid and I noticed it launches faster than any other Gas vehicle when the traffic light turns green.

    I can’t thank you enough for this video. This is the greatest time to be alive. Watching a drag race wondering how the hell it launched that fast, reading comments, see trans brake, see your video. Who could have that information that fast and that quality?

    Wait so the "11.0 second 1/4 mile" was fake news? So it didnt actually run a 11 second quarter mile?

    Hey EE the throttle body on this engine is before the supercharger. Your diagram would be correct if this was a centrifugal supercharger.

      s2syed Most of this technology has been standard in the drag racing world for quite some time now. However, this is the very first mass-produced street legal car to use this technology.

    Ok so i understand what a transbrake does. But how does one install one? Is it just an electric circuit or mechanical? Can it be used on any transmission, i know it can only be used on automatic transmissions but how does it work on other transmission lets say a dog box or a Lenco transmission? Thanks in advance

    can u do a "why drag cars use skinny front tires"...actually i know why they do but want to know the science behind it

    • @abes3925
      @abes3925 7 лет назад +1

      Less drag, weight, and the only purpose of the front tires is to keep the car straight on a drag strip.

    • @oregongaper

      Linelock is simply a valve to eliminate the rear brakes, thus allowing the driver to brake with only the front wheels.

    Why no turbocharger? it is more efficient. More people would buy this car if it had better gas mileage.

      Alex no one is buying a challenger for efficiency. Let alone a hellcat, let alone a demon. Also turbo lag, drag cars are blown because by the time a turbo has spooled up the supercharged car is halfway down the track
