You’re so right about challenge runs. I think everyone has that one game that they really love, but they’ve played it so much that they can’t really have fun with it unless they don’t play it for a long time. Challenge runs can really breathe new life into a game you’ve played to death.

I'd rather get a game with a difficulty setting that enables you to have a challenge even if you know the game perfectly. I'm not much into replaying games when there's no challenge, but yeah, I get challenge Runs.
Especially now after playing Re4 remake, because that game was so awesome that I had to get the platinum and to do that, I had to do a "challenge run", only pistols and knife, no merchant and no heals, to knock out 3 trophies at once.
      That was rather fun.
BUT, a game has to be really fkn good for a challenge run because they are restrictive by definition and... Games are fun when they have options.
Like I don't wanna do a devil may cry challenge run with just a single weapon for example. Dante with all his weapons and guns IS the reason the game is so fun. I don't even like Nero cuz he is super limited and he is a walking gimmick...well, 2 gimmick now in dmc5. He has the stupid arms and revving the sword.
Yeah...I'm not for challenge Runs unless it's something like ninja gaiden on ultimate ninja.
RE4 remake is just a unicorn of fun. Maybe because it's only 4-5 hours long? Probably.
Speaking of the video...OMG, why would you torture yourself like that? Telekinesis is the best and most fun part of the game, which allows you to combo at all.
I liked the game but I only played it once cuz it's way too long and the combat doesn't carry the game for long. I'd say the game would be actually better if it was around...15 to 20 hours long with most side quests, around 10-12 hours long doing only story.

Your videos are always amazing. A reason why challenge runs are amazing is because you really dig into the core mechanics of the game. There's so much filler, useless content, or incomplete ideas in games. It typically shows quality over quantity. Most games spam you with 1/10 difficulty mobs just to slow you down and waste your time and it's all about boss battles. I'd rather see more difficult normal mobs that take skill and tactics. I think that's why the Souls series are such a hit. Even normal mobs can be a huge threat.

I remember RUclips recommended one of your Persona videos after watching a Ratchet & Clank 3 challenge run and immediately subscribed after checking out your already uploaded content 3 months ago (FF13 pacifist was the newest one at that time). Not regretting it ever since then. You've become one of my two favourite challenge runners (as well as inspirations) very quickly. ^^
I can't get enough "MASSIVE DAMAGE" and "WE NEED TO GRIND SOME MORE" lines and I love the way how you handle negative people. Your content is top-tier and you deserve all the recognition and love you get for it. Keep it up 😉
Never played Scarlet Nexus before but it looks amazing and I'll definitely try it out in the future, thanks to your amazing run. 😁
As for the concept of challenge runs, I completely agree with you. It's a great way to get more knowledge of a game, learn and research new stuff and try out something new (which is rather fun to me than unfun). It's quite a trending topic in the recent years and I'm sure it'll get as huge as speedruns. You don't need to explain why you do challenge runs. People who love your content already understand it very well. 😉

    Hi great video,
i dont really have any questions but my suggestion for a game would be calligula effect 2, something like solo run or no equiment (this could be impossible not quite sure) could be fun, the game is not really story heavy and it has a really cool fighting mechanic. It took me around 50 hours while exploring everything and almost 100% the game so a 20-30 hour run should be reasonable.

For other, shorter, games you could dip your toes into elder scrolls/fallout, challenge runs can be just a couple of hours (although, some can be grindsville and be really long as well). If you'd like to stick with JARPG you could try Nier Automata or Code Vein, both of which are quite short after the first playthrough. There's also CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin which has just the whackiest mechanics and lots of weird shit you can do. There's also some immersive sims that you could do like Dishonoured, Prey(2017), System Shock 2, or Deus Ex.

Oh! If you’re after a short RPG and a simple but brutal-ish challenge to go with it, I’d say Dinosaur King for the Nintendo DS with a mandatory battles-default dinosaur only handicap.
The name of the game is simple, you’re a spunky heroic tween who collects reanimated dinosaurs with elemental magic powers on a globe-trotting journey to stop some Saturday morning cartoon villains from doing their thing with their own genetically modified dinos. Also the whole gameplay loop is literal rock-paper-scissors, the RPG elements start and end with you leveling up to determine how much of a tank your particular dinos are when you lose or tie a round. I did this challenge myself back in high school and reached the post-game, but I was so impatient and small-brained that I dropped the game only to never pick it back up.

I’ve beaten FFIV more times than I can count, and thinking about it from a challenge run perspective I think I’ll try playing the game with no shops, maybe that won’t be enough of a challenge but it’ll cut you off of regular damage output upgrades so I’m interested to see how it goes.
For future challenge ideas, FF III has a lot of extremely niche jobs, that you’re only supposed to have for one boss fight then drop. it would be interesting to see if you could beat the game with some of those “useless” classes, beating the game with a party of only scholars, for example.

If u wait till the unlock for the second license board for everyone u can make a master save to play the game again and change up the jobs. I'd argue that every attack either character uses, even melee, is actually psychokinesis. Yuito is flinging his sword around with his mind and Kasane does the same with her bat-a-rangs. She's using her hands to direct them but you can see the psychokinesis energy on both weapons when they're being used. Maybe it'd be possible to play through it without playing solo? Not sure if partners are able to kill bosses, I don't think they can.
I enjoyed this game but I felt the health pool on all the enemies was way to high. I ground enemies for hours only to gain 1 or 2 levels and I still did next to no damage to anything. Maybe it's just the weapons are way underpowered. They do so little damage, they expect you to use the special powers to do 90% of your damage. Melee is only there to recharge your energy. I set the difficulty to easy to play through the last 2/3rds of the game because I just felt like I was grinding and grinding constantly and never making any process. Even when I started new-game + at level 88 with the best weapon in the game I wasn't able to 1 shot the enemies at the start of the game.
There are DLC items that could have helped with this challenge. 1 item gives double XP and another that makes it so you can't die. The 1st just makes the grind a bit easier. The 2nd one is kind of cheat mode, but the game gives it to you so it's fair game. But you said no DLC items.
35:21 -- I just noticed you equipping DLC items. If it has a * on it's name it's a DLC item.
Enjoyed your run. You're a lot more committed to the grind than I am. Look forward to future videos.

Great job! I am kind of surprised it took until the final boss for the game forced you to use psychokinesis. I would have figured there would be at least one or two enemy types that forced you to use it before you could damage them.

      My thoughts exactly!
There IS technically a workaround - if you allow Brain Field, you can just spam it during that phase by using Brain Field Gear items to replenish the cooldown. Karen could then be easily defeated with BF melee attacks instead of needing to use the statue heads as shown.

You know I don't think I've ever mentioned it but while I, personally, love getting spoilers(I tend to react the same way emotionally either way due to getting into the character and for some story beats it can be helpful in softening the emotional blow) it's nice that you tell us what's going on without spoilers no matter the game. Just not something often done.(Although sometimes challenge runs I watch do the "not an accurate retelling of the story" thing where it's...spoilers but not spoilers? you know.) Definitely adding this game to my "to pick up when I have the cash" list which is...admittedly a long list but it looks fun! I'm trying to think of smaller RPGs I'm aware of and uh...~brain blanks~ The perils of being a completionist and grinder lol. Even the smallest of rpgs tend to well exceed their stated story play time when I'm around...even when I'm not using things like the Three Houses Infinite Calender Glitch(a godsend for my "timed stuff" anxiety lol) to make it even longer than intended.

Thinking minimum battles, no Legions (or if you have to use them, only the default Sword and no using the Astral Chain to bind enemies), and no Legion Fusion (aside from mandatory uses, the game forces your hand). Oh, and play the girl protag. Her version of Dark Hero is a banger.

  • @MarkofWisdom
    @MarkofWisdom Год назад

doesn't kasane use her psychokinesis in her regular attacks, since she's controlling her knives with it? So you'd technically have to use Yuito to avoid using any psychokinesis at all since his attacks are all melee rather than medium-long range like Kasane's, and possibly avoid using any sword combos that have the sword leave his hand and fly around with him controlling it with his mind.
More seriously-neat to see challenges runs of games like these, and it's always fun to see what stuff can be used to help overcome these challenges

@@RPGchallengeruns I don't think they have hover/anti grav tech, and even if they did it would be stuff that hooked into the psychic power stuff, so it'd still effectively be psychokinesis. I know there was at least one quest with an NPC that didn't have any psychic abilities at all, and they weren't able to use the augmented reality stuff that you see everywhere in game, though they did say they were at least fortunate enough to not have thousands of ads shoved directly into their brain like most other people were. I also think that the knives kasane uses have that purple psychokinesis glow around them when they float/attack.
Anyways, it's mostly a semantics point since the main intention of the challenge was no using the psi powers to throw stuff around or use the super modes since those involve the same psi powers of psychokinesis.
I really need to get around to finishing the game, I think I'm on like chapter 9 or 10 of Yuito's story
