YouTube's Restricted Mode is Anti-LGBTQ

- This week news dropped that RUclips's age "restricted mode" filtered out any content labeled as LGBTQ. This is concerning because this restricts questioning kids and teens from accessing educational LGBT resources that exist to make them feel less confused and alone. Restricted mode replaces RUclips's previous system used to filter out inappropriate content in public schools. Unfortunately, young people living in conservative areas or homophobic environments might only feel safe and comfortable seeking out LGBT resources at school if their internet use is closely monitored at home. The fact that LGBTQ people's lives and existences are considered "inappropriate" is deeply troubling and stigmatizing.

I grew up in a fundamentals Christian household and was very anti LGBTQ+ rights up until I met some people who are LGBTQ+ and some people who I already knew came out. After realising that they are people like everyone else my views changed *very quickly*.
Hopefully they fix this soon. At least the 'RUclips community' was very outspoken about this.

RUclips seems ridiculously out of touch with... everything. I heard about this yesterday, when one of my favourite RUclips game channels publicised the fact that due to her loud and proud lesbian nature and the fact that her girlfriend regularly joined her for videos, her entire channel had been taken down, even though they strove to be as family friendly as they possibly could be. Disappointed in the bloody medium
They also removed my coming out as trans video and I am worried. I also heard the restricted mode blocked videos on mental health.

This is ridiculous. I've only been out of highschool for a couple years but my teachers used RUclips A LOT to supplement teaching lgbtq discussions.
Yeah you can still access pornographic content on Restricted Mode, so this clearly is not about "protecting kids". It's about catering to those who want culture to be curated to their own biases. Fuck that noise.

I'm interested in you proving your point; you know, rather than just saying whatever fits your agenda.
Here's the theory: There is a lot of content on RUclips that is not being blocked even though it clearly should not be available for everyone. Porn, violence, etc. Instead of going after that content, RUclips has instead made LGBT content a priority. It's doing so even when there is no "inappropriate" content in the video. This suggests that removing LGBT content is more important than removing explicit content.
If you have an alternate interpretation I would be happy to hear it. It's important to have discussions with people who have opposing views. However, if you want to get into an argument I am not interested.
RUclips's "apology" made me so angry. A large majority of youtube's popular creators are LGBTQ+ or at the very least, they consider themselves an LGBT ally. It's so crazy that RUclips would stigmatize something it has in the past openly supported.
I said a majority of youtube's POPULAR creators, like Tyler Oakley, Ingrid Nilsen, Troye Sivan, Connor Franta, Shane Dawson, Joey Graceffa, Hannah Hart, ASAP Science, and many more.
This is just such an embarrassing move on RUclips's part. It doesn't matter if a "small subset" of viewers use the restricted mode, because the symbolic message of blocking ANYTHING related to LGBT+ topics is a direct implication that children shouldn't know about them. Yet we know that hundreds of millions of kids and teens already identify as something other than heterosexual. Seriously just so upsetting.
youtube's """apology""" didn't specify that they were referring to LGBT+ videos. They said "some videos" were incorrectly labeled so honestly i wouldn't be surprised if nothing changed
RUclips has removed nearly all of the gay romance audiobooks; and when you do a search for gay audiobooks, without the word romance, you get tons of heterosexual romance audiobooks.
This was not the case less than a month ago.
I don't think it's nearly as malicious as you pretend it to be. And tbf LGBT groups aren't the only ones acting like it's only targeting them. Some conservative/anti-SJW channels talked about it as if it was targeting them a couple days before everyone on the LGBT side freaked out. I think youtube just didn't think things through and didn't actually think about how to effectively implement a restricted/safe mode. In classic youtube move, they decided to go forward with a project they didn't test well enough. I think it was created to filter out any explicit content, sexual or otherwise (I mean literally all of PhillyD's videos are unviewable under restricted mode). It's affected more than just LGBT content, but a lot of LGBT content shouldn't have been affected
Sorry to hear this is happening. It's true it's difficult to believe this was some kind of accident and not something deliberate. Hopefully now that it's been highlighted youtube will do the right thing.
This mode is not friendly to most of youtubers and you can get around it by changing tags or not putting tags at all.
This kind of seemed to come out of nowhere, seeing the very liberal policy typically on this sight.
Give them the benefit of the doubt, if they actually intended to make a move like that they'd be committing suicide.

Two foreign films that have bisexual characters and even say the characters are bi are Margarita with a straw and Kiss me. Both of these films are also on Netflix.
Homosexuality is one of the little important topics you learn about as you are growing up and I don't blame parents for wanting to be the first to introduce their children to the concept. (Whether it be in favor of homosexuality or against it.) I believe the restricted mode is a mode that is supposed to simply avoid this big topic so that parents can teach the topic themselves and teach it in whatever manner they like. (these parents might teach against homosexuality in values, however there are homosexuals who don't favor the current culture around their identity. or the fact that the identity is so polarized and politicized and simply wish to be left alone.) The main issue at hand is the default state of restricted mode in regards to homosexual content. Who should have to login with an account or use a computer in order to get their search preferences correct? Should it be the people who want the homosexual content shown or people who don't? The answer is that it doesn't matter either way. If you really want your children exposed to homosexuality then you won't mind creating an account for your children. And if the situation was reversed. If homosexuality was okay in restricted mode then it you wouldn't mind simply creating an account for your children and setting it where the homosexual content didn't show. As it currently stands though homosexuality is defaultly restricted. So I'll say to you (Those who support homosexual content being unrestricted by default) the same thing I'd tell those against homosexual content if they were in your shoes: just suck it up and make accounts/use computers.

All of my LGBT content is gone on Restricted Mode, but the funny thing is, even my video where I say that people should be more truthful is gone! I have one on political Islam, and that's in there, but apparently endorsing the truth or denouncing Nazi-punching is inappropriate. In all, around half my videos are gone.
They also removed Chase Ross' entire channel, lol. Like, remove the sex toy reviews, sure. But half his stuff is for trans kids who don't know what their future holds. Sorry to hear it's affecting you too, and hope RUclips gets it together.

To play devil's advocate here, isn't it true that all sex education related videos were hidden with restricted mode turned on? You can argue whether or not that should be the case but you shouldn't say that LGBTQ videos were targeted specifically if all sex education videos were hidden.
You're conflating LGBTQ videos with sexual content though. There is plenty of LGBT content on RUclips that is "age appropriate" for kids and doesn't discuss sex. I also don't think medically accurate sex education is inappropriate. Sex ed in schools is already really lacking so an alternative place for information geared toward kids/teens could only be a good thing in my opinion.
Additionally, the videos of mine about bisexual identity that were hidden didn't discuss anything of a sexual nature. It seems that the filter restricts anything with key words like "gay" or "coming out" in them.
I wouldn't say I was conflating it with "sexual" content, but rather sex education. My point was that videos about reproduction, anatomy, sexuality, consent, safe sex, birth control, and sexual orientation would all be removed with restricted mode (correct me if I'm wrong). That would also include conservative anti-LGBT sex ed videos as well, such as videos saying that bisexuality isn't real or that it's sinful (again, I could be wrong). I just thought it was unfair for you to say "RUclips's Restricted Mode is Homophobic" if anti-LGBTQ videos were removed and any and all sex ed videos were removed, whether or not they related to LGBTQ issues.
By the way, I actually agree with you that restricted mode shouldn't apply to LGBTQ and sex education videos. I can just foresee that RUclips would un-filter your LGBTQ videos but some of your other non-LGBTQ videos (e.g. "What Are Period Panties?! | Destigmatizing Menstruation") would remain hidden. A lot of people seem to be focusing on the LGBTQ content when other content which is just as necessary is also being hidden with comparatively less outrage.

Homophobia, as with all forms of bigotry, requires an inherent element of malevolence. To say this policy is homophobic, is to claim to know the minds of those who made this policy. No.
Intention isn't necessary to do harm. I can accidentally step on your foot and it's still gonna hurt. Impact and the effects of one's actions regardless of whether or not you meant to do something harmful is a more accurate way of measuring harm. Saying that this can't have homophobic effects because YouYube didn't mean to be homophobic, is prioritizing RUclips (a corporation) over the LGBTQ community (people).
Dan Hughes I disagree. You can claim not to hate a minority and still discriminate against them. The only thing that counts is that you don't feel like these people matter enough to not have their rights trampled on. You don't value them the same way you do the people who you perceive as being the same as you.

Discriminating against a person is basically saying that they aren't worth as much as the people whose rights and wellbeing you do respect. Is being devalued because of the color of your skin or your sexual orientation not bad in your opinion? There are degrees to everything. Just because you're not lynching someone doesn't mean that what you are doing isn't harmful. And even if you don't do it maliciously, your actions stem from a bigoted mindset.
