I was a similarly shy nerdy guy in high school who was atrocious at talking to girls (and people in general.) Thankfully my parents raised me well enough that racism was never an option for me...but I definitely had a naive libertarian phase, and if I would've been slightly younger I could easily have seen myself falling down the Gamergate hole into incel misogyny. So glad my life turned out differently and I was able to significantly grow as a person.

This makes me sick to my stomach because all the signs you’re talking about, specifically to the point of these men pursuing biracial and Asian type women even, I’ve experienced many times. And you know that their actions stem from deep hatred, misogyny and racism but to the rest of the world, they think it’s just weird and a little creepy. They don’t understand the link between it all. Then they are shocked when these guys commit terrorist attacks. The signs are there and they are clear as day to women like us.
This seems to be prevalent in allot of whit nationalists.
This makes me so sad to see. I'm currently in college and i can recall a number of boys who would harass my friends and i, often starting after we rejected them romantically... I'm fearful that this kind of thing is way more common than we think. We went to a large and diverse high school and i can name two dudes off the top of my head who have since gone on to spout neo nazi rhetoric... very worrisome

Unfortunately, we see the "same" phenomenon here in Europe. Some PoCs and Europeans pervert social justice and begin to claim that White immigrants from East Europe are "PoCs", especially if their religion is Islam, as is the case with people from fromer Jugoslavia or Albania. Seems like dark hair and religion turns White Europeans to People of Color. I, as a PoC whose people have been imperialized and dehumanized globally, and killed and bombed for the last two centuries, think it's really heinous to bundle White Europeans together with the same people that these White Europeans have been killing over the last two decades. It makes me hate this world!
Glühfunke It has a lot to do with cultural identity and a theory of meztizaje (mixed race). A lot of LatAm countries tried to erase the Spanish caste system but never dismantled the racial hierarchy.

Glühfunke If you’re saying race is a social construct, then yes that’s true. But we cannot deny the fact that these hierarchies still exist and affect BIPOC today. But culture and ethnicity are more tied to shared lived experience than to actual skin color. Like, not all Jewish people are brown but you can recognize that people are Jewish ethnically. They can be also culturally or religious but not necessarily.
Ngl I almost did the same thing in middle school with sending messages to crushes in old curious cat equivalent websites. However, it wasn’t that frequent (at most one message every few days), and I asked only basic questions like “what’s your favorite food”. But it’s scary to see what that type of behavior can mean and lead to, especially in combination with other risk factors. I guess I’m glad I got over that type of behavior. Anyway, I’m so sorry you had to deal with this guy. It must be tough learning what this guy has become (or revealed himself to be) given how he harassed you and others. I hope you’re doing alright

Identity is so complex. Brown Latinx can be self hating. White Latinx will be racists but still date/marry brown and black people. I’ve seen a lot of racism online recently among the Latinx community in my city that I’ve had to unsubscribe to several local FB groups.

i don't think i know you personally, but i went to the same school, though i was one year behind. (fortunately i don't think i had contact with andrew but to be honest i'm not entirely sure). i just wanted to express my support for what you went through with his behavior towards you, and in processing this revelation, as i am also still processing it. it's a scary notion to see realized, that someone you knew personally (even if you weren't really friendly with them) could evolve into an influential bigot, and i hate that we keep seeing it over and over with seemingly little done to stop it. stay safe and keep doing what you do.

wow hi and thank you for posting this! unfortunately enough I have been grappling with a similar issue for a while... a guy i dated in HS (who abused me for 2 years) has in recent years basically adopted neo nazi beliefs, and I’ve always wanted to “expose” him somehow whatever that means and stop him before he hurts someone. Like the red flags are THERE but until he does something illegal I’m so stuck on what to do.

The irony is that he so clearly wanted to spend his time talking with you. And yet we know from experience guys like that don’t see us as having valid viewpoints and thus nothing you said to help him out would’ve likely gotten through.
