There have been so many wonderful comments on this video, thank you all so much. Unfortunately some cowards have decided to reply to people talking about their own abortion experiences in the comments to question their decisions. Apparently they didn't read the title of this vid! Very sorry to anyone who receives a reply like this. We will delete them as soon as we see them! You don't have to explain anything, to anyone x

My wife was put through hell when pregnancy troubles led to her having to get an abortion, the hospital in our city turned her down because "not feeling comfortable" due to their personal beliefs. We got told to go to the next city over (about an hour away), there she got examined again and they agreed that yes an abortion was called for however they had to get permission from the hospital's bishop, needless to say she was denied despite the risk to her life. Then we got told to go to our State capital where they induced labor (very painful for my wife who never was pregnant before) after hours and hours the abortion was done but then my wife had to be rushed off to surgery to remove the placenta that didn't come out and get a blood transfusion cause she lost so much (I had never seen so much blood everywhere). Worst experience of our lives, took years to process the whole ordeal. Btw we live in the US if it wasn't obvious. I always get angry when people act as though an abortion is a easy choice and event to go through.

What I find particularly stupid about that argument is that you could use it to be against anything that isn't unprotected sex. "How would you feel if your parents had used protection?" or even more abstract but equally as valid "How would you feel if your parents hadn't had sex that day and conceived you?" it's literally arguing in favor for every potential human being above the life of the parents.

My question still stands : how is it hypocritical to be pro-abortion and also anti-murder, since foetuses and children are not the same thing? Just because theres ALSO a difference between children and adults proves absolutely nothing - that argument is painfully ridiculous. You really don’t see how both adults and children’s can both be counted as living breathing sentient beings, but we might count foetuses and embryos and zygotes in a separate category ?? Are you _really_ struggling that much to see why those two things might be different ??
You seem to be contradicting yourself a million different ways, either repeating my exact point while somehow acting like you’re still right, and more importantly, just speaking extremely aggressively and blatantly rudely to total strangers who may have been willing to hear you out if you engaged in a good faith manner.

In BoJack Horseman, after all the abortion story with sxetina, Diane tells Princess Caroline, a character who really wished for a child but wasn't able to have one, that she wasn't sure if she did the right thing because she wasn't young and unable to care for her child and that she was aware of people trying to conceive and failing. Its movie about a girl who needs help from her grandmother for money for an abortion after becoming pregnant from her asshole boyfriend. They go on an adventure to get the money and the girl finds out her grandmother had an abortion as well and what led to the split of her and her ex husband. They finally get the money and the abortion with no regrets and just go home like normal. They just made a choice for themselves to keep the baby (I'm talking less than 5 years ago so not really a lifetime ago).
I agree with everything that's being said in the video and am pro choice myself (don't know what I'd do in that situation since I'm lucky enough that I never had an unwanted pregnancy, or a pregnancy at all luckily, and the thought makes me panic). But let's not demonize what other people capable of getting pregnant would do or have done by saying they were stupid to keep it or that it's the WRONG choice. God as a let's just say nonbinary trans woman this discussion is so bizarre for me, because it is virtually impossible I will ever get pregnant it is so difficult to do so for me, and I was raised with extremely forced-birth positions. So honestly between never having to deal with the problem of contraception and pregnancy, and being raised with that propaganda, I naturally took the "It's not my business, and even if I could have an abortion I wouldn't", but I see now that that position was still flawed, and I believe I'll be more outspokenly in support of abortion now.

Wow, I REALLY appreciate that scene from Dear White People. It really illustrates just how much people really have to sacrifice in order to have a child, especially young women just trying to get their education or careers started. I’ve known SO MANY women who were in college or advancing fast in their dream careers before they unexpectedly got pregnant, and then had to put their ENTIRE lives on hold in order to raise a child. Giving up EVERYTHING they ever dreamed and hoped for for themselves. It’s sad. Heck, even when a woman working in a job she thinks she’s “secure” in gets pregnant by choice many of them end up being so overwhelmed with motherhood that they end up giving up on the idea of going back to work, even if that was their original plan. Or their jobs just let their position go while they’re on maternity leave. It happened to more than one woman I know. People don’t think it happens because “discrimination against pregnant employees is illegal” but good luck trying to hire legal representation for yourself to go to court against your employer when they have far more money to throw at legal representation for themselves. Meanwhile (cis) men who become fathers are not expected to sacrifice nearly as much. Certainly they are not expected to sacrifice their careers. Nobody is out here asking “can working fathers REALLY have it all?” because ofc they can. It’s always the partner who gives birth to the child that ends up bearing the brunt of the child-rearing, and ends of sacrificing more of their own personal goals in order to do so.

It made me furious. At that point I had to walk away from the conversation, but I just can't believe he would tell me in front of his young, pregnant, obviously submissive wife that pregnancy and abortion effect and involve him the same way that it does women. Videos like this help me to get closer, along with basic human empathy and being raised by a grandmother and single mother, but no matter what I do I'll never truly understand. So much PRESSURE is put on every person born with a womb to have and raise children in spite of any and all evidence to the contrary that perfectly normal human anatomy/physiology/psychology is suddenly out of the question because feelings. Humans have an unsurpassed ability to be cruel. I have no clue how we'll possibly proceed, I can only hope that factual arguments win in the end.

Want to hear something awful (and still not half as horrifying as it gets?)?
I was raised in Catholic school and abortion was illegal in my country (barring rape and the like) until I was six years out of high school, in 2008. While I became an atheist pretty early on, I strongly believed that abortion was murder long after that. I also knew that I'd absolutely get (hike to Spain, if need be) one if need be and if I couldn't, I'd just kill myself.
So, in high school, my mind was changing somewhat on this. When the subject came up in religion class, I asked the teacher what he and/or the RCC thought I should do if I became pregnant but the pregnancy was non-viable and could only end in my and the fetus dying painfully. Should I let myself die?
He hesitated but had to say..."Yes".
You could have heard a pin drop.
A friend of mine, who was very keen on having children in the future and who was the daughter of doctors and thus very aware of the many ways pregnancy can go wrong, took to 'reconciling herself to death'. Basically, this 15 year old girl would lay on her bed, late at night, and convince herself that if push came to shove she had to just embrace death, willingly, because it was what God wanted and thus the right thing.
She told me this in tears.
And as horrifying as this is...it's still not even remotely the very worst it gets.

You made the comment that I came down here to write. As a fellow ftm, I seriously appreciated the gender-neutral language that was used, since when I usually try to find healthcare advice for me or whenever I try to take part in the abortion "debate" as someone still with a fully-functioning uterus but not a female-aligned gender, my dysphoria gets triggered a LOT . Seeing my problems as a nonbinary trans man being referred to as "women's problems" and reading the other campy language referencing the writer's obviously targeted audience of cis women and no reference to their actual audience, which includes all afab people and intersex people with some of the same problems that afabs face, just makes me uncomfortable and a bit sad. If only transgender issues and healthcare were taken more seriously by medical writers, governments around the world, and in our own educations at all levels so that this video wasn't a welcome oddity, but rather the standard.

This was really insightful. I always believed I was 100% pro-choice, but this made me realize that there's a major stigma around this topic that's been influencing my views. We really need to normalize the idea that yes, women get abortions simply because they don't want a kid and no, that doesn't make their choice any less valid. Thanks for sharing. This is a difficult and emotional topic, and you talking about it can (and already does) help so many people. Abortions should be safe, legal, and accessable because everyone deserves agency over their own body, regardless of others opinions. :)

@S No, it's not. Please do some research on what actual biology and sex is. I can't even begin to start on how inaccurate your statements are. The best starting place I can give you for a simple explanation is this (it is not an official source I would ever use in a paper, but it does provide a good explanation): official-transsexual.tumblr.com/post/612653150790402048/eroguru-official-transsexual-sidewaysspun. Another good source is here: www.nytimes.com/2018/10/25/opinion/sex-biology-binary.html. And also here: newsroom.ucla.edu/stories/male-or-female. Beyond that, you can do your own research; it's as simple as looking up "complexities of biological sex" on google. There's plenty of scientific articles out there that talk about the intricacies of biology, and not only that but also how it can be changed. The act of deciding a person's assigned sex at birth is nowhere near as accurate as you think it is. _Biology does NOT conform to western society's "perfect binary ideal" and never HAS._ If we want to be honest, there's no such thing as decidedly male or female. That doesn't mean considering one's physical makeup isn't important, or that it doesn't influence certain medical decisions or otherwise, but it DOES mean that a statement such as yours is not only insensitive, but also inaccurate. "Male" and "female" are social constructs we created to make sense of the world around us, and biology by no means conforms to these terms we created. _Male and female have no scientifically provable definition._ There will ALWAYS be an exception- you could say "female" refers to all people with wombs, but then that means every woman who might have had to get a hysterectomy for medical reasons is suddenly no longer a woman. Okay, well then what if female referred to every person with XX chromosome- except, there have been documented cases of people's developed and observed sex contradicting their chromosomes. But then, how do we decide on a scientifically provable definition, that is completely consistent? We can't. Meaning the statement, "You will always and forever be the sex you were born as..." has no inherit meaning to it.
So yes, phrases such as "those who are capable of pregnancy" are not only validating, but also helpful from an objective standpoint. "Fertile females" might make sense from a surface level, but when dissected tells us practically nothing. Because even if you choose to ignore _everything_ I just stated up above due to a closeted mindset, then I want to highlight that there are intersex people out there who may not be considered or denoted as female, but are capable of giving birth. Are they suddenly excluded from the conversation because they don't have a handy little "F" on their birth certificate?

The lactation thing - so glad you mentioned this! While I have not had an abortion, my best friend had to have one a couple of years back. She was also surprised by this (surprise) lactation. It was uncomfortable, a bit embarrassing, and also somewhat emotionally taxing for her as she wasn't aware she would be producing and lactating some milk for the fetus (or potential baby) she chose not to continue gestating. So thank for your mentioning this lesser known occurrence associated with abortions.

TW: Rape, Intolerant assholes, child abuse, a bitter sweet ending
In Brazil, I think the state of Rio de Janeiro, an awful case became big news. A ten-year-old girl who was being raped by her uncle was found pregnant (Investigations would later find out she was being also abused by her dad and her brother). Here, abortion is still illegal, with the exception of rape cases.
After an honestly too long process, the proceedure was green lighted. But get this: in front of the hospital where the girl was aborting, a few dozen of religious pro-life people protested for the procedure to be stopped. They shouted the girl was a murderer and the doctord were kidnapping feminists. I am not joking.
You know what's worse? THEY STORMED THE HOSPITAL. Police had to drag them out, and even though the protesters attacked doctors, the police disn't use violence. That's when the cavalry got there.
A feminist counter-protest kept the religious mass at bay while the abortion happened. A Twitter acount there posted: "The abortion is in the end. There is no going back. Victory!"
This happened only a few weeks ago. I let a few things aside, like when the known terrorist Sara Winter spread pictures and the name of the child while calling her a murderer. Bit that's just awful. Everything that happened these days was awful. And although they manages to get the child the care she needed, it hurts to see what it took.

One of the worst depictions of abortion and a woman's autonomy over her own body I've seen recently is the movie Dogma where an infertile woman who works in an abortion clinic and was left by her partner due to her infertility is made pregnant by an angel at the end. The whole point of the movie was about choice and at the end she has her choice basically taken away from her by being forcibly pregnant but it's treated like a miracle.

@@TheyMadeMePickAName there are methods to deliberately render oneself infertile (birth control, sterilization), but when describing someone as 'infertile' (or "barren" in older stories) it's implying a lack of choice, an inability on the body's part to conceive and/or maintain a pregnancy. And there are lots of things that can cause this, such as hormone levels affecting ovulation, problems in the Fallopian tubes, damage from disease, genetic factors, age, defects like a septate uterus, etc. AMAB people can be infertile, too, with low sperm counts or malformed sperm, etc.
This is why there are things like in vitro fertilization and other technologies designed to help people have kids. Reproduction is, unsurprisingly, complicated.

It seems strange that we would both have this specific idea of some type of person who has "too many" abortions, since we grew up in different countries, and in dissimilar cultures within those countries. Even though our mums have basically nothing else in common, they both have this idea of a person who just repeatedly has abortions, and this was so ingrained in their concept of abortion that they had to pass it on to their prepubescent daughters as a key part of the ethics of abortion. As far as my friend and I could remember, neither mum expressed how many abortions could be considered "too many". Weird shit.

When I was 19 I had a pregnancy scare with my fiance. We had already agreed that we were not interested in children for another decade, he had just deployed with the Navy and of course we had sex the night before he went, of course we did. And then my period was late, and I started getting really scared. He agreed immediately that anything I decided to do was the right thing, but if I decided to abort that that was the right thing because we were not ready, but if I decided to keep the possible child then he would be there the whole way. It turned out it was a false alarm, but at that time I was too distraught to make that decision. Just imagining having to make that choice put me in such a state because everyone around me had expectations for how I was going to answer that question. I was raised in an abusive household, where my sense of self and my sense of agency had already been damaged, and the fact that I was undiagnosed autistic certainly wasn't helping my processing either, and I did not tell my parents because I was terrified of what they might demand of me.
If I'd actually been pregnant I think I would have gotten an abortion? But it probably wouldn't have been until month 3 that I actually got my head together enough to pursue it, cuz there was no one in my world who was going to help me get there. and who knows if I actually would have been able to get the procedure by then? Who knows if I would have been able to understand the directions with no one else to guide me? Not me. That sure is shit
My parents want to know why I'm so angry at them for the subjects they just don't want to talk about, this is why. Because when we choose silence over discomfort, people die.

Thanks for bringing Amanda Palmer into this. I've been a fan for years now, and The Dresden Dolls song 'Mandy Goes to Med School' just attacks the subject with incredibly dark humor. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I've always enjoyed the energy of that song - I've gotten to see it live, and it was the 2000's - we were all so, so much younger then

There's a new film that is either coming out soon or just released called "Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always" that's about a girl travelling from Pennsylvania to New York to get an abortion and nearly everything that's been written about it says it's a beautiful supportive movie.

High amounts of stress can lead to developmental problems. So regardless of whether or not you like that they're considering an abortion, it's better for the baby (if they don't decide to get an abortion) not to pressure pregnant people into having the baby. So the acceptance of abortion literally helps everyone here.

I cried listening to your abortion story because it was exactly like mine, I had horrible morning sickness and I was very early on in the pregnancy. I had a nightmare I was pregnant so I took a test and it was positive. My family and Fiance supported me and I knew I needed to get the abortion, I was 19. Went in and got it done, on the way home I ate fast food and cried. It was an overwhelming experience.
I got pregnant while on the pill, and I've only ever had one partner, my Fiance

As someone living in the north of Ireland how we ended up getting our rights is disgusting
Like our parliament collapses and that’s the only way we can achieve our rights
Don’t get me wrong I’m thrilled that we have FINALLY been granted what both the rest of the UK and Ireland have had for years, but it kind of stings that that’s the only way we could achieve it

I did find it unsavoury that Stormont was 'threatened' with legalising same sex marriage and abortion like it was some kind of punishment. Why didn't Westminster step in and legalise both far sooner? Oh well, at least it's legal now.

When we had the referendum to legalise abortion in the Republic of Ireland I was too young to vote. Despite this, I educated myself so I could debate with relatives and teachers on the issue. I knew it was something that was going to affect my life in the future, even if I wasn't allowed to have an official say in it (bring the voting age down to 16!). We were at war with a conservative male teacher at our school over his 'pro life' views.
Come the day of the vote, I made sure both my parents went to the polling station to cast their votes, even though my dad had a broken leg and was in crutches.
Abortion was legalised by a large majority and people celebrated the fact they wouldn't have to make any more covert journeys to england to terminate pregnancies. I celebrated, glad to know that my friends and I would never have to travel for an abortion like previous generations. As someone who doesn't want children, having that choice is important to me, and I was so proud of the Irish people who voted to give me that right.
(Also I love Dirty Dancing, it's a fantastic film).

Abortion "railroads" in Poland are going to fall apart completely during the current epidemic, seeing as there's no way to cross into Slovakia (where abortion is legal without caveats) without going into a two-week quarantine. Quarantine within the same exact system that denied ya an abortion (at this point, it's difficult to get a safe and legal abortion even in the event of rape or when the fetus is unable to ever survive ex utero). Not great.

I hate people who say that abortion is murder. Often, mothers who get their babies aborted do it because they can’t take care of the child, so really, they’re saving the child from a life of misery.
Edit: I do NOT think poor families and kids are better off dead, I just think that a woman shouldn’t force herself to have a kid she doesn’t want, because then the child will grow up unhappy and the woman will be unhappy and nobody’s happy. I’m not into late abortions or anything either. I worded this comment weird and I’m sorry

I thought Call The Midwife did an 'alright' job, even if it still fell into the "perfect victim" and "bury your abortion" tropes at parts. The whole arc of season 8 was about abortion and the different reasons people seek it, and the impact being forced to have it done illegally.
    SPOILERS
In the first episode, a young nun (I think she's like 19?) is made to help out a model, who another midwife snuck into the house, who needs help passing what's left after her illegal abortion. Being a young, naive, nun and midwife, she's made to think about why somebody would go through this.
In episode four, a friend of one of the midwives discovers that she's pregnant. She's poor and is struggling to raise her two other children as it is. She seeks a legal abortion, but is denied because it isn't medically necessary. She gets an illegal abortion instead, but suffers an infection from it and then dies on the way to hospital. It's definitely "Bury Your Abortions", but it's emphasised that she would have been fine had she not been denied a safe abortion. Her husband isn't angry that she had the procedure, he's angry that it had to be done unsafely. Her death isn't a punishment for her actions, it's a sign of what was wrong with the law.
In episode eight, another midwife discovers that her grandmother is an illegal abortionist. She grapples with the fact she knows these women need help, but that her grandmother is not a medical professional and is hurting these women, even if the cause is noble. Her grandmother won't stop though, so she decides to report her to the police. They end up getting the woman from the first episode to testify, to admit that she had an abortion and that she was harmed (IIRC she isn't able to have kids as a result). IMO it doesn't claim that the woman should regret seeking an abortion, just that she should have been able to safely. The tragedy isn't the abortion itself, just the consequences of restricting access to abortion. The midwives discuss the case, they're angry that these women had to resort to such risky options. (One of the midwives also works at a family planning clinic, where they prescribe the pill, which is still pretty new in this time period)
Throughout the next season, the granddaughter of the abortionist is racked with guilt about sending her to prison. She goes to visit her in prison, the grandmother is forgiving, and it's like, she's sorry for the harm she has caused, but it's clear the harm was the unsafe practices, not the abortions.

Adding to the "positive representations of abortion in media": the show Six Feet Under, Claire gets an abortion while in college and bonds with her brother's girlfriend during the process. Claire's boyfriend later finds out and gets pissed and they break up, but I'd argue that the writers' took her side as he is shown to be an extremely childish and jealous man.
